H. S . began at 8 a. m. with homeroom to start our day. As the first nine-weeks rolled around, tardies for some stu- dents added up to 19 or more. So for our late sleepers, homeroom was changed to the end of first hour. As you probably guessed, we had some frustrated sleepers. Again like last year, Edison was presented with a new principal, Mr. LeRoy Webdell. Dif- ferent policy rules and regulations we had ad- justed to once more. Edison also added 13 new teachers. The inexperienced blended in with the experienced to become one of the school ' s best. Lunch time seemed to be the same routine. Those students, fortunate with cars, went to the local McDonalds, Burger King, Armans, and the modernized Burger Chef. The others at school ate the usual Pizza Burgers, Hoggies, and Stromboli. Restroom and locker stops between classes. Boy, were they short visits. We never seemed to catch up on all the gossip. 7 Academics: Some new, some old. Phase elective Eng- lish classes were going strong with several new class of- ferings. For some, hours seemed to last forever. But whose fault was that? You can only make the class what it is and for what it is worth. Your effort, combined with class par- ticipation, can make it happen. We all know thatE.H.S. lacks in some areas, and our facilities are not the best, but we get by each year. To everyone, the last hour of the day brings relief. Our minds seem to drift away as the hands of the clock slowly, but surely, reach the destination of 2:55. For Seniors, it is 1:55 with an hour to spare before prac- tices, meetings or whatever. Each class varies for students. You can always tell what class is liked best. Report cards tell it. With the daily interruptions by the in- tercom, the teacher ' s look at that little square box got worse and worse. Wish we could read their thoughts ! As we march right on through classes the question be- comes, Where do you go from here? The passing of test answers from the hour before never seemed to work. Apparently the teachers gave a different test. - _ t As Freshmen, we adjust to many different life styles. Some complicated and some not quite so hectic. Freshmen girls look in-a-daze, when upperclassmen guys check them out. Some got lucky and got a date. As classes seem to get easier. Freshmen fitted with the rest of us. Sophomores come back with a new outlook on the pros- pective school year. They feel as if they have accomplished many tasks and were no longer at the bottom of the totem 3 ° ' e ‘ Classes change again for Juniors. Col- lege preparation starts entering the minds that linger. Preparing for college becomes essential for what the future holds yet, classes will always change from year to year. They change from the time we are Freshmen to the time we are Seniors. Before we go on marching through Edison, Academics is where it is at! As the pyramid of classes grow, ten- sion of each class builds up on everyone, yet classes that are the most nerve racking prove to be the most re- warding. Come march with us as we celebrate America in its 200th year. We as a school, will always remember the Bicentennial year. And hopefully the spirit of ' 76 will live forever. Co-editors Karen Kinsey and Sharon Davis, along with a staff of nine, coped with new specifications, including; copy preparation, an increase in ad sales, a new book size, color, and deadlines that came late in the year. A first, the program had access to stu- dent photography— some 200 photos. 1 . The fifth-hour program ready pages as Mr. Gray prepares negatives for drying. 2. As always, the competative class spirit was the factor in student life, especially during third hour Pep Sessions. Though the r Sp i ri t Trophy was awarded to the Seniors, school spirit was considered low. Homecoming week (Sept. 29-0ct. 4) proved the most hec- tic of times with Thursday night ' s parade and hall decora- tions. Piled on top with that the bonfire and finally the game and dance. Each class found themselves in utter chaos trying to accomplish their projects. Seniors took the hall project and hall dec- oration competition. Juniors, who placed sec- ond in hall project, received a first for their float Elton Eagle with the slogan, We ' re Scorin ' More . After three years. Powder Puff football re- returned. Seniors again won in overtime against the Juniors. Something new: The Student Council sponsored a winter dance called the Snow- ball . The music was provided by Cross- winds for the 155 students who attended the formal event Jan. 31st. Midyear, it became the dream of every girl to be asked to the prom. The prom was held at EHS ' s gym with the post prom at the Supervisor ' s Club in Hobart. The theme of the prom was Evening in Parie; 11 This year, Deca District Contest was held at Valpo High School on Wednesday, February 11th. Fifty-nine students from EHS par- ticipated and returned with 14 trophies. They competed against all Northwest Indiana Schools. All first and second place winners were sent to Deca State Contest in French Lick, Ind. , March 19th through the 21st. In addition to our new principal, EHS added 13 new teachers to its staff. Adjustments to these changes had to be made by both stu- dents and faculty. The highlight of the last home football game was the band march- ing onto the field in new uniforms. It took five years of hard work on the part of both band members and band parents to raise the funds. The activities that made the uni- forms possible included selling calendars, spon- soring turkey dinners, and going door to door. The new uniforms are black and feature a reversable overlay for marching band and it converts to a tux- edo for concert band. Graduation came and as usual seniors were out a week early. It was sad considering leaving, but j each graduate had his or her own paths to follow. The usual 25 percent to 35 per- cent had plans to go on to col- lege. Others had plans that in- cluded marriage, technical and vocational training, militiary services and jobs. Sunday, May 23rd E.H.S. said: Goodbye and Good Luck ' 76 graduates. Approval for the building project at E. H. S. finally came through. Construction began in early summer. Page 44 . 1. The ' 75-76 slogan is on this sign in Coach Yagodnik ' s room. 2 . It would be a banner year for team and individual efforts. Cross Country was off and running with an improved season and a new head coach, Mr. Patty. Like last year, Mary Ann Mullarkey was the girl ' s contribution to the efforts. It was a hard season with Francis Dunn earning third in the Conference; 10th in the Invitational . Last year ' s football team earned a winning season and repeated it again for a fourth straight time on the gridiron at the 6-4 mark. As usual it was the same num- ber of injuries and breaks that didn ' t help. The JV ' s also had a strong sea- son this and last year — 1-4 and 2-2-1 respectively. It was a growing program. Then the basketball team came on with a 14-8 season. Coach Yagodnik, in his third year, took the team all the way to the Sectionals— a hard lost to East Chicago Washington. It was the first time the team took part in the NWH Conference. After an embarrassing lost to Michigan City Rogers, the wrestling team got off and going and went ahead to win the NWH Conference for a second year in a row. The varsity were 10-3 while the JV ' s finished 7-2. A standout, freshman Bob Sliger went undefeated for the season. Then in spring, the Prevocational basketball team took state. And this was only their second season in this competition. What a win. The Harriers had a difficult, but better season than last year. Senior Francis Dunn did well in the Regionals and Sectionals. It was a 4-8 season. The girl ' s gymnastic squad went 7- 3 for the season with Sandy Kincheloe going all the way to state for competi- tion. It was a good year for the team ' s underclassmen. Then the girl ' s track took the Conference for the first time. The baseball team went in streaks, but tied for first in the Conference with two games to go. The JV ' s lost only a couple this year. And the golf team closed with a 13-9 record and third in Confer- ence. Standout was John Derado. 4 4 Page 64 Varsity Cheerleaders: Karen Kinsey, Mary Ann Mullarkey, Kathie Shudick, Kim Faulkner, Kim Vanderlin, Kelly Vanderlin. Deciding Juniors Go For One More . . . The year started off with the arrival of our class rings in October. We had to carry the load of raising money and preparing for the Prom. Luckily, the car wash, dance, and the Super Frog posters were very successful at making money . They brought in over $1,000. Getting class members involved slowed fund raising events and class unity. Then something new for tradition. Sopho- mores were able to order class rings. The rings were shipped at the close of the year. Of course, the class was busy with Home- coming and such. Then in March, on the 20th, the class sponsored a car wash, at Ray ' s Lanes. The effort raised a great deal of money and a brief rain shower that very morning brought relief to the work. In addition, the class held four bake sales at school that month as well as another early in April at the local Thrify Mart. The same small group did the work, but as the year progressed and we seemed to mature, the class got together, said Lori Tokash, class president. We never have done these sort of things before (fund raising events), noted Cathy Murray, class president. Early in the year a class flag was ordered . And for the first part of this year, the fund raising events consisted of bake sales. Then in February, the class held a dance followed by a bike raffle, a money- maker here and at the Junior High Carnival . Into the close of the year, the class, more organized, was considering a car wash and trip . It was a good year after all, noted the class president. 1. The staff would like to express our appreciation to these fine merchants and pa- trons for their faith and confi- dence in our 148-page product. Their continued support de- serves our patronage in return. The design of the advertising is such to serve the student and the merchant by providing more photographs of the year. The staff felt that this is the best arrangement for those con- cerned . 133 134 135 1 - Kellens Florist 342 Main Street-Hobart, Ind. 942-1197 Compliments of Gross Sports Shop 136 Carson’s J- uto Body 3 aint Shop Garber ' s Lettering Expert Paint Body Work 3414 Liverpool Rd .
