Text from Pages 1 - 140 of the 1964 volume:

We ve worked Vow, reminisce with us th foreword As you leaf through the pages of your 1964 Edisonian, you will discover that the staff has deviated from many of the patterns set in previous years. Through the weeks, we have mused over a great many ideas, both new and old, discarding some but retaining those which represented 1964 at Edison. We tried, in our writing as well as through our pictures, to present Edison as you know it. We could not be satisfied with the old ways just as you, the students, must not be satisfied with the ideas or standards of yesterday. We hope you will remember the year of 1964 with a fondness for E.H.S., and we have attempted to capture the highlights throughout the year in this, your 1964 Edisonian. Editor 2 eaication With great expectation we, the staff, dedicate this annual, our 1964 Edisonian , to the future years. It is our purpose to provide a store of pleasant memories to remind the readers of the eventful years spent in Edison Senior High School, as we trust that the future years shall continue to prove eventful years for the students yet to come to Edison and shall provide in- spiration and abundant opportunities for the students to achieve their new and admirable goals. 0 ADMINISTRATION 5 J. The glow of the Blazers was dulled by the Eagles ' spark--Dale Anderson on a 35 yard punt return. °The Eagles went on to cool the Blazers, 7-0. Mitch Wahlman put the Eagles in the air as Edison connected for eight out of nine passes and an overall of 115 yards against Wirt of Gary. The excellent defense halted the Trooper s attack, and Wirt fell to the Eagles 13-6. , - With two wins and no losses, Coach Gustafson ' s gridirons crushed the Indians of Dyer 28-6. Anderson romped 58 yards on the opening play with Ginter and Garzella boosting the Eagles even higher with a TD apiece. , , , Thorton Fractional handed Edison its first loss of the season 20-0. Battling the heat and unused to afternoon games, the Eagles had their wings clipped by Thorton s powerful team. The Trojans topped the Eagles 27-7 on their own field. Although the outcome was a feather in the Trojan ' s helmet, the Eagles demonstrated their resolution by holding Chesterton s DeSarro well beneath his usual par for yardage. . ... The Eagles bowed to the Calumet Conference Co-Champions, Calumet and Griffith. After four consecutive losses the Eagles turned the tide in the following game with their archrival, River Forest. Edison blasted the Ingots with a 13-6 loss. The students taunted Coach Bromberg and the Ingots with signs and high spirit, as the explosive Eagles scored to the chants of We want a touchdown now” in the background. The cheerleaders took home the signs, the students too home the spirit, and Ike and the players took home the trophy. _ , , Portage was the highlight of the ' 63 season, as Edison edged the Indians 19-7 and moved into a three-way tie for second place in the Northern Division of the Calumet Conference, i he Eagles ' aerial attack employed against the Indians was effective for a total gain of 17 1 yards and two touchdowns. Eagle captain Ike Halaschak made a TD for Edison, and Don Ginter and Craig Courtney found their way beyond the goal post as the Eagles proved they wef e not a team to be underrated. . , , , ,, „ , „ Highland was the concluding game of the 63 season and even the fog could not obscure the impending 21-12 victory. The Eagles ' fireworks brightened the misty evening as Don Ginter made the greatest number of tackles against the Trojans and with Wahlman speai headed the Eagles ' victory. , „ , , , _ . The 1963 season left Edison with a record of six wins and four losses, the best since 1957. Dale Anderson received the outstanding back award, as he racked up the most yardage on the team. Little Dale had the ability to swing his hips in the right direction and initiated some mighty big explosions with his heart football. With good reason the words, good running halfbacks, echoed throughout the season, but without the Chuck Streetmans to hold that line, their accomplishments would have been almost nil. Heavy ' 220 pound, 6 2 senior Chuck Streetman was elected the most valuable player on the team. Behind Chuck were the out- standing tacklers--Dan Gruett, Mitch Wahlman, Pete Chapas, Phil Garzella, Joel Mock, Jim Fields, and Barry Lackovitch- -and Mitch ' s receivers- -Courtney and Garzella. The Calumet Conference Honor went to sophomore Craig Courtney, who was elected to be on the fiist All Conference Team. Junior quarterback Mitch Wahlman made the second team, and honorable mention was received by Chuck Streetman, Dale Anderson, and Ike Halaschak. Edison ' s Baseball Team is another im- portant branch of the Eagles ' sport life. The Eagles are coached by Mr. Hartley, who spent seven years playing professional baseball for Syracuse in the International League and was in spring training with the Phillies in ' 48. Mr. Hartley has been baseball coach for five years and holds an excellent conference record of 38 wins and 5 losses. The baseball team has never held a Calumet Conference ranking below third place, and the Eagles were the undefeated Conference Champs in 1962. Edison ' s performance on the baseball dia- mond is energetic, excellent, and effective. The Eagles opened their track season un- der their new coach, Mr. Bernard Halaschak, who is a g raduate of Edison. The Eagles ' track potential was evident in the juniors- - Jack Czilli, Daniel Salain, John Serrano, and the other boys who will be returning for another season in ' 65. B A N D The Senior Band, which doubled last year ' s enrollment, enjoyed many new act- ivities as well as its usual yearly role. The Marching Band presented pregame and halftime shows for the home football games, the Stage Band played at the home basket- ball games, concerts, and school dances, and the Concert Band performed at four regularly scheduled concerts. Outside ac- tivities included the Fourth of July Parade at which time the Senior Band received a Best of Parade trophy. Several soloists and ensembles entered the solo and ensemble contest held at Portage High School in February. The Flying Eagle Band as named by this year ' s spectators entered the state contest in April and was judged to be one of the fastest growing units in the area and much improved over previous years. The Marching Band was honored by an in- vitation to perform at a pre-game and half- time Valparaiso University football game-- this honor being granted only to three other bands. The highlight of the year was the trip sponsored by the Lions Club of East Gary to enter the parade and award pre- senting ceremony at the annual Lions Club Convention in Evansville, Indiana.
