Wanting never to forget them, we have tried to relive the year in picture and in word. School started on September 3, registration day. Classes were assigned, teachers were introduced, and study was begun. Editor. The 1955 Edisonian 5 As we, the students, entered the building throughout the school year, we were greeted by on September 3, 1954, as well as from our teachers who guided our learning, day to day sports, and activities. From day to day we were given the opportunity to pursue according to our aptitudes the various fields of learning such as English, Spanish, Latin, social studies, mathematics, science, business education, industrial arts, home economics, art, music, and physical education as they applied to the course of our choice. Some took the college preparatory course ; some, business education ; others, industrial arts; still others, home economics; and the rest, the general course. Bailey, former principal of Edison High School, set up his office as the first superintendent of East Gary Schools in the fall of 1935. Following the first few days of November, Mr. Bailey moved his office to a larger office in the Eastside School Building. We have missed Mr. Bailey’s presence as in former years, but many changes have been made as Edison’s en- rollment lias grown since Mr. Bailey came to Edison twenty-two years ago. OUR APPRECIATION TO OUR ADMINISTRATION As we entered the halls of Edison from day to day to attend our regular classes, we did not see the members of the Board of Education who met regularly twice a month to attend to their administrative duties. To the members of the Board of Education, Mr. Bailey, our superintendent, and Mr. Roos, our principal, we are deeply grateful for their untiring efforts to provide the best of educa- tional facilities possible with the means pro- vided by available tax funds. The members of the class were proud to he upper classmen and began the year by electing their officers and representatives of the Student Coun- cil. Following the selection of the insignia of their class ring early in the semester, the rings actually arrived on December 6. Their class dance was held on March 4. The biggest and final event of the year for the juniors was the Prom, which they gave in honor of the seniors, in Marquette Park Pavilion on May 12. f All year, the juniors worked faithfully with one goal in mind, which was the earning of a sufficient number of credits to become seniors next year — their final year of high school. On September 4, 1951, we the Class of ’55, entered Edison’s halls as freshmen and soon became accustomed to high school life under the leadership of our class officers : president, George Greer; vice-president, Ann Marie Halaschak ; secretary, Robert Fiebelkorn ; and treasurer, Carl Jablonski. We were rathei green, but we knew the meaning of fun as well as work and proved it by giving a Barn Dance which was the most successful dance of the year. As sophomores our class worked together in order that our candidate — Phyllis Bumbera — be crowned Carnival Queen and, also, received $5.00 for our treasury. Our class officers were : president, Joseph Chester ; vice-president, Don- ald McBride ; secretary, Phyllis Bumbera ; and treasurer, Wayne Wesley. Then we were juniors, finally upperclassmen. It was a big year for us with the Junior Prom, class rings, junior play, our nomination for Carnival King — Carl Jablonski — being the winner, the girls’ “Powder Puff” football game, and Barbara Schaefer crowned Sweetheart Queen. The officers for our junior year were: president, Donald McBride ; vice-president, Fred Urbanek; secretary, Sally Summers; and treasurer, George Greer. “SENIORS” at last ! Our most important year had arrived. Our senior officers were presi- dent, Fred Urbanek ; vice-president, Gary King ; secretary, Carol Thorgren ; and treasurer, Guy Everett. Louise Kurtos and Wayne Wesley were senior representatives on the Student Council. Throughout our high school years almost all of us just could not wait to graduate and be “grown up”; but as our fourth year came near the end, we felt sorry to leave our school, teachers, activities, friends, and class- mates. On May 12, the juniors gave a Prom in our honor at the Marquette Park Pavilion. As senior pictures, name cards, and announce- ments for commencement arrived, we knew that our graduation day would be arriving very soon. Baccalaureate was held on May 22. In cap and gown as seniors we brought to an end four wonderful high school years and began a new phase of our lives. On May 27, our class of ’55 was graduated. Its purpose was to recommend to the administration improvements in the functioning of the daily school program, activities, and regulations. Each organization and class, including the eighth grade, was rep- resented on the Council. After the North Judson game, October 1, the annual Homecoming Dance was the Council’s COUNCIL outstanding social event. During the Christ- mas season, the Council decorated the halls with arches of snow-covered evergreens and arranged a blue-lighted, snow-covered tree near a fireplace on the main floor — all of which added a bit of cheer and Christmas spirit. The last undertaking was the supervision of the election of next year’s president. The final program of the year, a parady of shows and their commercials called “T-V-itis,” was on May 6. In honor of the seniors the choir banquet was the concluding social event. 50 The 1955 Edisonian Senior Ensemble Joseph Chester, Louise Kur- tos, Nellie Bright, Mary Ann Shoemaker, Ann Marie Halas- chak, Peggy Barker, Olivia Parker, Carl Jablonski. The Future Teachers of America is a fairly new organization in school, as it was organized and named the Virgil I. Bailey Chapter last year. F. T. A.’s purpose is to help students decide if they want to become teachers and if they do, what grades they will want to teach. At first, F. T. A. members are on-lookers, then they A. teach a class for either one or two six-weeks periods. This year, four members and Mrs. Chapman attended the Lake County F.T.A. Round-up at Emerson High School in Gary. A financial project sponsored by the F. T. A. was the sale of hot dogs at the noon hour. BOOSTER CLUB This year, the Booster Club was one of the most outstanding clubs of the school. A lot of credit is given to the club as a whole and, also, to each individual member who helped to spread school spirit throughout the football and bas- ketball seasons. Under the leadership of its officers the Booster Club gave the first dance of the school year which proved to be very successful. A new system was set up for paying dues this year. For $1.00 for three months the stu- dents received membership cards and were given rides to and from all away-from-home games. 62 The 1955 Edisonian Top row— Sandra Berg, Joyce Cunningham, Angeline Castro, Rita Drake, Darlene Zinkovich, Toni Tucker, Beverly Draves. VARSITY T he varsity football squad of the fall of 1954 played ten games of the season with a record ■ of three victories, six defeats, and one tie. At first the team was very inexperienced, and the opposition just beat Edison. About the middle of the season the team started on the upward trend, as Edison was tied by Wirt, 6-6 ; mauled North Judson, 25-0; beat Dyer, 13-6; and then lost to Portage, 26-6. In the next game the Eagles lost a close game to Edison of Gary, 12-7. This was quite a game because Edison of Gary was the conference champ, and the Eagles came closer to beating them than any other conference team. Next, the team thoroughly beat Knox, 26-7, but closed the season by losing to the highly rated Morton squad of Ham- mond, 20-0. Edison placed one man on the Calumet Con- ference Team, and that was quite an honor for Frank Aloia inasmuch as it was his first year in the line. Joe Chester was placed in the back- field on the second team. Honorable mention went to Charles Gilmore, Robert Muraco, Guy Everett, Robert Mayka, and Bernard Halas- chak. Just looking at the record, it appears that the reserve team had a very unsuccessful season. This was due mainly to the fact that the varsity lacked depth, which permitted many of the first string of reserve players to move up to the varsity. Although the reserves did not win a game, they tied Portgae with a score of 7-7. The reserve team’s schedule was limited to six games because some of the games that were scheduled were postponed and were never re- scheduled. BASKETBALL VARSITY The varsity opened the season against Mer- rillville and Calumet Twp., which were two of the best teams in this area, and lost both games. When Richard Chantos was advanced from the B-Team to the varsity, Edison won four suc- cessive games. In the Holiday Tourney the Eagles lost to Lowell in an overtime game but beat Dyer in the consolation game. Then, along came misfortune as Richard Chantos and Fred Urbanek were injured. Since both players were in the line-up of the first five, their injuries were one cause for Edi- son’s loss of eight consecutive games. Edison did not win another game until both of these players were back in action again, after which the Eagles beat Medaryville, a strong Wheeler team, and Knox but closed the season of sched- uled games with a loss to Chesterton — an unde- feated team of the season and the sectional champs at Valparaiso. In the Sectional Tournament in Gary on February 24, the Eagles lost to Tolleston of Gary by a score of 48-84. Thus, the varsity completed the season with a record of eight victories and thirteen losses. B-TEAM The B-Team ended the basketball season with a very respectable record of twelve vic- tories and eight losses. The B-Team lost its first game of the season to Merrillville and then proceeded to win the next four games. This streak of victories was interrupted by two losses — one to Edison of Gary and tbe other to Grif- fith, which was followed by a victory over St. Joseph of South Bend. In the first game of the Reserve Tourney, Edison beat Clark of Hammond, which gave the Eagles the privilege of playing two more games which they lost — one to Griffith and the other to Calumet Township. Toward the end of the season the Eagles won five straight games, one of which was a 72-20 rout over Wheeler. The season was ended with a loss to Chesterton. 74 The 1955 Edisonian Top row — Donald McClaran, Thomas Walsh, Ralph Strong, Michael Havrilla, Francis Chester, Thomas Johnson, Coach Haddad. FRESHMAN TEAM Inasmuch as the final score was concerned, the freshman team ended the basketball season with fourteen losses and no victories. The rec- ord of the freshman team would probably have been quite different had not a freshman, Gene Brock, been promoted to the varsity at the be- ginning of the season. The freshmen lost in their first game of the Freshman Tourney, and some of their games during the season were cancelled and never scheduled again. Mr. Richard Haddad, assistant basketball coach and junior high school te acher, was coach of the freshman team. This task was taken care of by the staff ; needless to 2737 Elkhart Street say, the running up and down the stairs produced quite a few stiff and sore muscles.
