As bright confetti falls as thick as rain Upon the shoulders of the milling throng. And minds grow drunk on triumph ' s gay champagne. The sun will rise and set, the moon will gaze. With cool detachment, down each crowded street. And who shall then remember other days When triumph seemed as joyous and complete? And by what wisdom may wo guarantee That this parade marks some finality? Upon some date which is not ours to know, The roar of press and click of key will vie With commentators saying thus and so And half a hundred reasons how and why. And all the months and years that went before Will be as naught against those headlines bright. Grim Tarawa and doomed Corregidor, Whose bitterness laid milestones toward this night. Will walk as ghosts along the crowded street Where only joy is king. But such small notes Should, for a moment, stay the milling feet. Should, for a moment, still the shouting throats.
