ACTIVITIES Flfty years ago when our grandfathers and grandmothers went to school, most of the 8Ct1V1ti8S that we have now were unknown Now and then they had a spelllng bee or a program for the par ents, but for the most part they studied their lessons and went home to work. Dlfferent extra curricular activitles gradually made their appearance in the schools, though, so that about thlrty years ago 1n the larger hlgh schools there had developed many outslde actlvlties about that time basketball for boys and g1T1S was Just being started in Ashtabula Hlgh School. They played baseball quite a bit, but had no regular team unt1l several years later Foot ball was one of the maln attractions at that tlme, but the big gest event of the year was the track meet. Outside of the ath lGt1CS they had glee clubs, a debate team, an orchestra, and dramatlcs Usually the dramatics consisted of a Junior and a D6D1OT play. lnls year ndgewood nigh School has seen a distinct incre se ln the number of extra currlcular QCtlVit1SSg An extra perlod w s added to the dally schedule and devoted to 3CtlV1t18S. Thls extra perlod enabled the students to form several new clubs d1t10D to the activ1t1es already establlshed, the school has ad ded thls year a radlo club, a kodak club, and dramatlcs club, and a COEMSTCIBI club. Although we have no football team, and as yet no track meets this year, we have lgh School and Junior Hlgh basketball teams, a baseball team, a debate team, a band, a newspaper staff,e mlxed chorus, and last but not least an nEchoW staff Au! BOYC BAQKETBALL The 1956 57 boys basketball team gave Coach Iatson much more of a headache than any season he has ever coached at Edgewood wlth only two veteran ball players, Melvin Johnson and Rlch ard Luce, the boys were very badly handlcapped from the begin ning of the season They were able to w1n but three ballgames out of fourteen But, nevertheless, Coach Watson is very proud of hls boys' basketball team, because of the fact that they showed so muck enthuslasm and courage throughout the season Joe Colantlno was the high scorer with a total of 85 points.
