I CV -cLu I f j v i tf - N s I . J wm mil SUr 5 VlfOREWORD iar ' The artist chooses his subject; That is his mode of praising. The 1963 Aurigan has selected Alma Mater as its subject and mode of praise. What is an Alma Mater? It is not just a song made up of notes and words. Rather, it is an expression of praise and loyalty — dedicated to our faculty, athletics, activi- ties, students, and our school. Just what is a school? It is a combina- tion of academics, athletics, educators, ac- tivities, clubs, friends, and memories. As the words of the Alma Mater ap- pear in the 1963 Aurigan, they exemplify the attitude and activity expressed, making ' 62- ' 63 a year of note. m. t 1 • ■DEDICATION 4 Although a high school principal seems to be a far-off and foreboding figure to most of the young people in his school, the students of Edgewood High know that this picture of Mr. Vaniman truly typifies his sincere attitude toward all of his students. The good will generated by our principal has made his relationships with the Trojans genuinely pleasant ones. For five dedicated years he has served Edgewood High School to his fullest and has endeavored to build it to the stature it has attained. His example of school spirit has become contagious throughout the student body, and the encouragement and inspiration he has given individ- uals has had many lasting results. He has been the inspiration for such traditions as the completed senior quad, the victory flag, the senior all-night party, the senior parents tea, and many and varied student activities. With the assistance of Mr. Vaniman, Edge- wood made many forward strides toward reaching the goal we now have achieved. That goal is our organized and enthusiastic student body, united as one working unit under the supervision of a dedicated educator. For all this and much more we proudly dedicate the 1963 Aurigan to Mr. Roscoe J. Vaniman along with a sincere and appreciative thank you. rr r CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION. . .10 HAIL TO THEE OUR ALMA MATER TO EDGEWOOD SING OUR PRAISE ATHLETICS. . .26 TO EVER FAITHFUL SONS AND DAUGHTERS EAGER VOICES RAISE. In all areas — scholarship, dramatics, athletics, music — Edgewood students have made their mark of excellence. It is my personal wish to everyone that the Tro- jans will continue to display the leadership traits that have made them outstanding, and that the passing years will cause us to be increasingly proud of your ad- ditional accomplishments. C£ Uo yy yyC LY £AiWOJjiX mL OmJj §4AKfmJL tydXAxuilMj WJv The end of the senior year is a time of re- joicing upon the completion of a task well-done,- but it is also a time of nostalgia. Pleasant associations of the past years are being termi- nated, in most cases to be renewed only occa- sionally, if at all. For twelve years the graduating class has been associated intimately with perhaps the greatest of our American achievements — univer- sal, free education. Probably no other enterprise so perfectly portrays the outstanding character- istic of our American heritage, concern for the worth of the individual. Seldom will you see, in the coming years, any activity in which so little regard is given for your race, color, creed, financial, or family cir- cumstances. Success or lack of success has de- pended on you and your efforts. May you be satisfied with the result. J rri Z Edgewood has just completed its fourth year and graduated its third class. Over these years, E.H.S. has grown in beauty, tradition, and stat- ure. The atmosphere on campus has been one of diligent pursuit of learning with pride and high school spirit. Your opportunity for wider selec- tion of courses has been made possible through the seven period day. Our athletic teams have done an outstanding job this year in establishing us as a school that has spirit, drive, and winning power. Your student government has worked in an effective manner to bring about the desires of the students in their area of responsibility. As the Class of 1963 leaves to become a part of the past of Edgewood High, I wish them well and success in the years to come. The legacy they have left behind will long be remembered and will become another chapter of the Trojan legend. The Trojans that remain will carry the Trojan name to even greater heights. hAXHKxkd If (RJW J2AXitO|2 (UuL (MHUlA Xa . id j jb (j CXlit ' v fytikWAXUb OmAj 4AMj ofy fuUrl r ZL iLp qjaj exiAuUa tlc; attxtuxta Stephen Fountain Mae El ley Ruth Geis Eleonore D. Our year of note has given us many memories associated with many good friends. We will lose contact with many of the friends, but we sin- cerely hope that the 1963 Aurigan preserves the pleasant memories forever. Our theme has presented the many contribu- tions and highlights of 1963 — a year of note — at Edgewood High School. As you will note there have been many changes in the 1963 Aurigan. We have tried a new style for the cover, a change in the format and a more effective use of color. The purpose of these alterations is to make a more appealing book for you — its readers. In producing the 1963 Aurigan, I am indebted to many people for their fine help and guidance. The efficiency and dependability of the entire yearbook staff deserves special recognition. I would like to thank Mr. Polk of Austin Studios for his suggestions and outstanding workmanship, and the Taylor Publishing Company for their co- operation. A special, personal thank you to Mr. Dunahoo for his criticism, patience and encour- agement throughout the year. We hope you find many pleasant memories as you relive this year of note through the pages of the 1 963 Aurigan. TAYLOR PUBLISHING COMPANY Vj V ' r, - .
