3D figures help Sara Jane Evans and Stuart Hall solve a geometry problem. Proving parallelograms, Mrs. Holbrook illustrates wirh a movable figure. Math, math, and more math! Confused algebra I students pondered over equations such as 3-x-4 yet within only a few moments were confronted with 3-x:2. Already having mas- tered problems such as these, algebra II minds digested expon- ents, logarithems, and imaginary numbers. For students particu- larly interested in algebra, a more thorough study of this branch of mathematics challenged the advanced Algebra III class. Tangents drove plane geometry students in circles as they struggled to remember the correct theorems, axioms, or pos- tulates correctly' applying to each exercise. Some probably dis- covered for the first time that ninety degree angles are always right angles-never left. Many mathematically inclined students with slide rules, formulas, and figures constructed in third dimension passed solid-trigonometry hoping someday to enter the beckoning Held of engineering. Seeing Abe Lincoln In Illinois, and building models of Roman columns, Eagles were sure of an interesting year in the field of social studies. United States and World History, in which we drew maps extensively, gave students a more thorough understanding of the things that have helped to make our nation great. Eagles could be heard wearily quoting the preamble to the Constitution on the way to their class in Problems in American Democracy. One of the most interesting proj- ects of the year was the breaking down of the Consti- tution, and making a thorough study from the first article to the very last amendment. Psychology-Sociology classes watched The Three Faces of Eve, gave panel discussions, were lectured by an authentic beatnik, and wrote detailed themes. Combined, they made up all the well-rounded social studies courses offered at Edgewater High School. Science Student Today - Worker Perhaps Tomorrow The nauseous smell of formaldehyde filtered through the room as the subjects for dissection were brought out in big jars. Un- concerned biology students were soon engaged in a fascinating study of parts of frogs, grasshoppers, and worms. There was no question what was going on when a loud ex- plosion rocked the 200 building. Classes were eagerly engaged in an experiment which wasn't always successful. Senior science classes usually had a series of themes, lectures, and illustrative filmstrips that followed along with the material presented in their text books. The most intense science study was conducted in the physics classes. The study of the physical world considered as a whole, left its mark on poor Eagles who today can be found wandering around in a stupor muttering equations and formulas. 1975 will find these science students still experimenting.
