How else would Mr. Brumbaugh have been able to carry out his duties without the ability to laugh at himself as well as others? How indeed would the schedules have been worked out, or the halls have been kept clear during lunch if he hadn't known and understood human nature so well? Yes, Mr. Brumbaugh's understanding and humor bridged the relationships between faculty and students and made E.H.S. truly our school. One thing, however, glamorized and completely changed your last year- the fact that you were a senior! Fall activities began with the opening of a new and successful football season. The Boone-Edgewater con- test made you forcibly realize that this was the last time that you would be part of a high school team, After football, the first phase of the year had passed, and next came the ordering of name cards, rings, and measuring for caps and gowns. Suddenly February arrived and with it the gaiety of fair week. Selling drinks and grilling hamburgers for the masses at the senior booth was certainly a welcome change from school routine. The hilarious faculty-senior basketball game brought February and basketball to an abrupt ending. Blended in with all the main events ofthe year were things which may have seemed trifling, but were really very important-the fads, fashions, jokes making the rounds, and the popular and unpopular songs. While the girls were roped with yards of beads, the boys vied for attention with their new color combination of pink and black. At last spring breezed in, bringing with it baseball, track, swimming, tennis, and golf. How hard it was to sit in class when you longed to be at the beach or lake -any place but in the confines of a classroom. Soon the girls, arrayed in fluffy pastel dresses, at- tended the senior teas, honoring the graduates-to-be. The wonderful junior-senior prom sharply reminded you of the fact that the year was rapidly drawing to a dizzy close. Baccalaureate and the beautifully impressive grad- uation ceremony officially ended the school year of i954-1955. As you marched down the aisle to the strains of Pomp and Circumstance in your traditional white cap and gown, behind you lay twelve years of kindergarten, elementary, junior, and senior high school. Across the footlights you gazed toward a sea of blurred faces and, with your diploma tightly clasped in your hand, walked out into the night, the unknown world. ,na ,fa sci' i 9, Rb 'N ii '-.nw OFFICERS Seated: Mrs. Holbrook, Sponsor, Mary Mos- teller, Treasurer, Miss Evans, Adviser. Agility, skill and a deep interest in sports were the characteristics which made Charles Baetzman and Arlene Dreyer our most athletic pair. si Local forensic activities and honors piled up at state contests brought Marcia Johnson an! Luke McKissack the award as best speakers. Wlwfa Tlllw Www Adept mixers of chemicals and experienced users of thistle tubes and Bunsen burners, Cathie Barker and Charles Kottmeier were the most scientific girl and boy. Typewriters, copy paper, and No. 2 pencils were the tools of trade for Leora Lawrence and Tom Holt, most literary girl and boy. Ann Patton and James Ewen won highest honors in the intellectual department as the most scholastic girl and boy in the senior class. THE UNIUB ASS Get-Acquainted Week! Homecoming! Junior Class Day! Junior-Senior Prom! These events were represen- tative of the varied activities sponsored by the Junior Class during the past year. As the middle-men, the juniors were right in the center of all the rush. The initial project of the year was Get-Acquainted Week, the hectic first week of school when everyone was getting accustomed to new classes, different schedules, and new faces. Clever name tags, provided for everyone by the juniors, helped speed the process of making new friends. As part of the wel- coming program, a variety show for the sophomores and other new students included songs, pantomimes, special- ty dances, and cheers. Delicious doughnuts and frosty cokes were served for refreshments. Homecoming! That one word meant something dif- ferent to practically everyone. To the football players it meant the struggle of a hard-fought battle. To the attendants it meant the honor of being chosen to repre- sent their classes at one of the biggest events of the year, while for the queen it was a once-in-a-lifetime moment to cherish as long as she lives. To the students Homecoming m ea nt attending an exciting gridiron match with a colorful half-time show and a gala dance given by the Junior Class. Keen anticipation awaited the Junior-Senior Prom, the biggest social event of the year. This dance, sponsored by the junior class, was the product of weeks of con- centrated planning. Soft Iights, sweet music, pretty girls in fluffy dresses, handsome boys, breakfast in the early hours, the beach the next day, all spelled the culmina- tion of every student's dreams. Junior Class Day brought the class out in force to operate lvey's for one day and to replenish the junior treasury with a percentage of the profits. Class members acted as sales people and as models for the fashion show which was a popular feature of this annual event. These activities and a dozen others made the year one to be long remembered as everybody worked to- gether to make each project a success. Practice for being seniors next year? Maybe, but just being middle- men made 1955 a wonderful year in itself. fum OFFICERS Seated: Miss Mary Gordon, Advisor: Mr. Francis Fitzpatrick, Sponsor. With bated breath and hesitant steps they assail the gateway to the school and a completely different method of educa- tion. Though apparently some step out bravely, all have a mingled feeling of fear and excitement. They are glad and proud that they have reached high school, the next rung on the ladder, but still a little uneasy on their new perch. ln l954-l955 Edgewater succeeded in making the jump from junior to senior high school an easy one. Sophomores were received with open arms and a wel- coming auditorium program. Football-shaped name cards made getting acquainted a simple task. From the very first, sophomores gladly took their place in the affairs of Edgewater. The Sophomore Carnival, put on during the second six-weeks period, was one of the highlights of the year. After the Rogersville, Tennessee, grid contest, every able-bodied guy and gal headed for school to join in the fun. Colorfully decorated booths provided both stimulating entertainment and tasty food. Afterward the gym was invaded by a horde of cats ready for a cool jitterbug session. The fun was ended when the ever-present clock tolled its unwanted command. The sophomores could be proud of their first venture in high school entertainment. Next on the agenda was a dance given for the Boone and Edgewater Junior Varsities. Its purpose was to honor and entertain the hard-fighting, prospective varsity foot- ball men. Credit for this again went to the Sophomore Class. During March the class was buzzing with plans for entertaining the faculty. On National Teachers' Day sophomores bent every effort to give the faculty the best party yet, complete with refreshments. With the coming of spring and the turning of young men's fancies, sophomores sponsored the annual spring dance for the entire school. The down-beat was heavy, the music was hot, springtime gaiety filled the air. From the opening trill to the closing chorus, sopho- mores were a definite and most important part in the harmony of Edgewater. STUDENT C0l'NCIL Mr, Presidentl I move that we adopt this as the constitution for the student council? This one sentence completely altered the council or- ganization and was long-awaited by those who had worked diligently to achieve the unicameral form of student government. The change from the former bi- cameral system proved to be one of the foremost ac- complishments of the year. A glance at the school calendar showed that the year was filled with student council sponsored activities. A great deal of work was given toward completion of the handy student directories and toward club projects and constitutions. ln November, four chosen members journeyed to the Southern Association of Student Coun- cils' convention in Jackson, Mississippi, returning in- spired to do better, Keen anticipation dwaited the announcement of the second-semester student officers. With new leaders, the council successfully carried on the work of the new semester. With the president leading the student body in the alma mater, the student council brought its third successful year to a close. Y' F 83 GUERY DAVIS, Vice-Pres, and Sec. Peggy Bostick, congratulates Steve Van Voorhees, whom students re-elected Pres. for second semester.
