Scharfenberg, G., Olson, J., Bauer, N., Brown, J., Watson, T. 49th State in the Union Four senior boys were selected to attend Badger Boys' State at Ripon College last summer. Jerry Brown, Jack Olson, Gary Scharfenberg, and Tom Watson were sponsored by the American Legion, Lions Club, Rotary Club, and Veterans of For- eign Wars. Boyg were divided into two parties, the Nationalists and the Federalists. They were then assigned to dormitories. Each building signified a county, each floor a city, and each room a ward. City elections were held consisting of party caucus, nominations, campaigning, and voting. The week was climaxed by the election of a Badger Boys' State Governor, who headed the legislative body. Comparable to Boys' State, the Wisconsin Women's Auxiliary, has sponsored for fourteen years, a Badger Girls' State. Nancy Bauer was chosen by the faculty as del- gate to the 1957 session of Girls' State, held at the University of Wisconsin. During the week, the 345 girls throughout the state, participate in running gov- ernmental affairs and electing mythical state, county, and city offices. The delegates attend lectures on various facets of the government and politics in order to attain sufficient knowledge of governmental workings. The highlight of the week was the inaugural ceremony at which all state officers were sworn in. Miss Bauer was elected Assemblyman.
