XIN:K EAGLE 1987 The 1986-87 yearbook theme keeping our heads above water came about with the onset of EPHS joining the Lake Conference this year. We felt a water theme would be appropriate. The eagle will be floating through water folies throughout the entire book. We also felt that the Boundary Waters theme that has been very popular could also tie in. We chose to use nautical flags to represent the letters E A G L E S. The cover gives you a complete picture of the front and back side of life at EPHS. Q3419 ?.Lho .3313 .44 The 1986-87 Economics Classes were on the move with the sale of h boxer shorts and sweatshirts. Each morning we looked forward to a new commercial message inform- ing us on the latest in ttBoxer, Box- ersii and uTheyire Red and Theyire Black. Mr. Ritter chose to incor- porate Junior Achievement into his economics class and the results were more than suc- cessful. Each class ended their semester showing a profit. Through many hours of hard work, the students were able to run a company and understand its workings right in their own classroom. We look forward to seeing the creativity of the next products to come out of Mr. Ritteris economics class. IVOPIPA ,. b-w , '94 1490 QOPEDrP 3: 'Dl ,- PRMRI; CLOTHING DRIVE The newly established student council sponsored a clothing drive during the week of December 8-12. Clothes were donated by the students of EPHS and many members of the Eden Prairie community. These clothes were to be donated to a charitable organization in the Minneapolis area. The Student Council gave the clothes to Goodwill to be given to the needy. There was a contest between EPHS and Mound-Westonka H.S. to see who could donate the most clothes. We more than doubled Mound-Westonka in accumulated points. In the class competition the Seniors dominated once again. Student Council members donated their time and energies to count the clothes. This is the first of many activities for the community that the Student Council intends to be involved in. EPHS A T RI VERPLA CE On September 20, 1986, a large group of Eden Prairie students participated in the ttA winning season, Fall 1986 function at Riverplace. One employee said that the students displayed an excellent representa- tion of our school and its talents. The group included the football team, who did their skit HEagle Growing tdatts de fack Iackl The enthusiasm of E.P. was otherwise represented by members of the cheerleading squads and the danceline. The drama department also participated by performing A sort of Duology. Also, Andrew Furber read a poem about getting married someday and owning a dog that goes uruff. The music department sent students from the marching band and the choir to Riverplace. The marching band opened and closed the ceremony, and the Eagalairs per- formed a quick piece. Ieff Hall also sang a promotional solo from West Side Story. The performances were very well done and symbolic of Eden Prairie and our talents. student art exhibition saw uasa After being non-existant for several years, the Art Club has returned. This year those in the club enjoy participating in all-school ac- tivities. They acted as a resource for various other school groups. For example, when the fall musical, West Side Story, was coming into being, the Art Club was called on for artistic input. They have been asked to help design shirts and posters for many other organiza- tions too. They displayed art work in the com- mons for community-related activities to see. Also through the club, students were able to participate in the Lake Conference and Scholastic Arts competitions. The Art Club's greatest undertaking was the organization of a spring arts festival. The festival was an after- noon of no school which exposed students to the multi-media aspects of art. Theytve each given a part of themselves that will be a part of the show each time it is per- formed; wherever it is performed. I would also like to thank all the people that have believed enough in this show to give us support, whether it be in the form of costumes or encouragement. And thanks to you for giving my show a chance by coming to see it. I hope you are entertained. I hope you are involved. But most of all, I hope you are changed in some very small way. DIRECTORS NOTES After reading many one act plays, I was still uncertain of which play to do because none of them made me feel. I kept remembering Charleyts play and thought I should wait until he had graduated before using it. However, the more I read other works, the more I wanted to do Charley's play. After many heart to heart talks, we decided to do A Homecoming. Working with an untried play was challenging and exciting. . Working with the author had advantages when we had questions about the script or wanted to change something. Working with this cast has been one of the most heartwarming experiences of my life. Not only are they very talented artisans, but they are also amazing- ly caring and sensitive people. We have spent two months creating, perfecting, and refining this show for you. We hope it makes you laugh and cry and think, but, most of all, we hope it makes you feel. I am Claudia Reidl, and I am an AFS exchange student from Austria tnot Australian. I live in a typical apartment house in Vienna IAgain, not Venicell. My parents and my two sisters live there too. I already graduated from high school and therefore this year in the US. is a fun one! I love langua es and I want to pursue a career in that fie d. I learned English, French, German, and Latin in hi h school. Here. I am taking my second year 0 Spanish. I enjoy E.P.H.S. because it is so different from my old school. There is much more athletic involvement. students seem more creative. and theylre encoura ed to use their talents. I really enjoy being ab e to choose my subjects and learn new things. That will hel me in my future plans. The students, as weII as the teachers, seem more 0 en and easier to talk to than in my old schoo . I think it will be hard to leave this country. but on the other hand. I am looking forward to going home again. I hope I'll see you in Austria sometime. AUSTRIA Hello. I am Mr. Nylander, an exchange stu- dent from Finland, but you can call me Pasi.l have stayed in Eden Prairie only about a year. Last year was the most exciting year in my life - so far! I really did enjoy my time here. I found American school easier than my own school in Finland. We have to study more subjects than you do. and we don't have a chance to pick out classes. I think your system is better for the future. I've always been interested in languages. I've studied English for 9 years. German for 5. and Swedish for 5. My native language is Fin- nish. My interest in language was one reason I came here. Now. as you are reading this. I'm back in Finland with my parents. and my brother. I just want to thank everyone at E.P.H.S. You made my American school year very successful. I will never forget you. .. x- e.- V-..., FINLAND I am Reiko Yahata from Tokyo, Japan. I guess Japanese life is similar to American life. But one exception is that Iapan has only one race. Japanese. Culturally. I found many differences between Americans and the Japanese. For example. language. I have also found it interesting to learn other cultures. I have had a hard time with language here, but I have also had a great time! I would like to say thank you to you. I love E.P.H.S. even ifl only went here for a year. My name is Tsutae Kimura but my nickname is Mako. aqua sbaeesbzaasae NHEEEEE 28 mmy; I am loanna Reinseth. I'm 18 years old and I come from Denmark. 1 live near the capitol. Copenhagen. in an apartment with my mom and dad. I have 5 older sisters but they are all married and have Children. When I left Denmark, I had just finished my second year of high school. I have one more year when I go back. I find the Danish high school much harder than the American. We have much more homework to do and we don't get to choose our classes as you do here. I like the American system much more because you can get classes you like and think you'll need in the future. I'm a Rotany exchange student from Japan. I came to the United States on August 23. 1988. I'm glad I met many friends and teachers at Eden Prairie High School. Since August. I've found that there are many differences be- tween American culture and Japanese culture and I very much enjoy sharing them. I have had three different host families during this year and everyone was nice to me. My hobbies are drawing. playing the piano. climbing mountains. sewing and cooking. If you. my friends. visit Japan. please come to my home. gm, xv amf 0R GANIZATIONS meeuahum Under the direction of Pam Skaar, the 1986-87 yearbook staff worked hard to publish one of the best year- books ever. The editor was Heidi Hoffman tseniorl, and her asst. was Annette Iorgensen tsophomorel. The entire staff was incredibly hard working and loyal. They strove to include all school activities to give them all recognition and appreciation. The theme of this years yearbook is ttKeeping Our Heads Above Water . They selected their theme because this is the schools first year in the Lake Conference. This theme is continued throughout the entire book with the help of senior artist, Michelle Solie. The 1986-87 school year was a very exciting and megmrable one for the yearbook sta . The dedication and hard work of the staff was shown by the successful issues they completed. It is true that debate is a lot of work, but it is also a lot of fun and should receive more sup- port and participation. This year, the team started out slowly but gained momen- tum as the year went on. This has been a iirebuilding year for the debate team and we've suc- ceeded in laying a strong foundation for years to come. Next year, we hope to finish with several people in the top ten in state. Penny Fletcher, Lynnette Hitt, Gordy Schaeffer, Iason Theis DECA, Distributive Education Clubs of America, is a student organization that goes along with the marketing classes. 10 EPHS DECA members attended the leadership conference along with 1500 people from throughout our region. 11 DECA members from EPHS competed in a district competition on February 2 and 3 at the Holiday Inn International Hotel in Bloomington. EHBBEEE hes! This Yearis Quiz Bowl Team surprised a lot of people on their way to a 3-4 season. This was their initial year of competition in the Minnesota State Quiz Bowl League. The squad was lead by Coach Steve Cwodzin- ski, and senior Captain Neraj Chepuri. It was rounded out by senior Dan Bedford, juniors, Steve Yi, Mike Iwan, and Wade Hanson, and freshman, Cameron James. Over the summer with the help of Stephanie Schuft and Missy Nelson tco-captainsi and twenty other girls, Ienny organized practices and choreographed dances. The line performed at Riverplace in the fall and later held try-outs for the winter season. They danced at basketball, wrestling, and volleyball games and also at pep- fests. Their first competition at Ap- ple Valley helped prepare the danceline for future meets. Around mid- February signs were hung around the school saying Would you let an Eagle starve? Students were en- couraged to bring canned goods to their homeroom. All donations went to the PROP organization. The Variety Show displayed student talent at three performances. There the audience was rocked by the bands Inno- cent, Inertia, and Lazee Boiz. Brian McCarten and Karin Olson both sang great solos. Student rappers also per- formed. The audience heard the Senior Slide rap and clapped and chanted to Reg- gie and Unge's tune uDon't Drink and Drive. Finally. the Bloodmobile visited EPHS in the spring. Blood was donated to the Red Cross. These three projects that NHS sponsored were successful and had a positive effect on the school. 33 sane: Haeiah 34 Junior Board of Directors The Suburban National Bank Iunior Board of Directors is made up of ten seniors selected on the basis of their ap- plication and individual interviews with Dianne Myers and Karen Brettingen. This organization gives students a chance to learn about business and bank- ing through various activities with their advisor, Willie Emry of Suburban Na- tional Bank. The Board holds monthly meetings and plans activities such as touring the Grain Exchange, State Capitol and hav- ing speakers. They represent the bank at several community events such as the Foundation Ball, Economic Outlook Breakfast, Ministerial Prayer for Hallo- ween and Thanksgiving. The team had a super season. We ex- pected to be competitive even in the lake as we had six strong returning players. They were a fabulous group of kids to work with. Everyone had great attitudes and skills. The highlights of the season were beating Armstrong and Minnetonka, playing outstanding ball against Prior Lake in the front round of the playoffs, and the tremendous sup- port that we received from parents, staff and students. The team adopted a nickname of the Hammer Squad this season, it was due to the great hitting that they were capable of. The 1986 boyts Cross Country team had a successful season because a large number of boys joined the squad. The team worked well together and had a positive at- titude. The result of their hard work was winning second place at the Co-Star Invita- tional and consistently running in the mid- dle of the pack at the rest of the meets. The runners were a Close-knit group and always ran in a pack. Whenever an Eden Prairie runner was spotted, it meant that the others were close behind. Captain Kirk Johnson set a good example and was a fine leader. The Varsity team consisted of strong runners who had been practicing since summer. During their season, they developed a strong sense of team unity that helped develop the pack running philosophy. The ninth grade boys captured the Lake Conference Ninth Grade meet with Pat Sekely winning the individual title and Keith Donovan placing third. They tied for second in the con- ference and came in third in the sec- tional meet. They came away with a trophy at Welsch and ribbons at Grand Rapids. Although they were often winners, each win was a new and ex- citing experience. Each skier was a respected member of the team. The Eden Prairie ski team is renowned in the conference for its team spirit and support for its skiers. There were always people Cheering at the bottom of the hill - even for the last racer. The team members probably wore out two pairs of jo ing shoes each. The best performers were the ids who also were on the swim team because most of the meets were held on lake ice so thin that the best times were by those who had perfected a combination of the stating-butterfly . The season was deemed a success because nobody drowned or suffered heat stroke. The team got so excited during one practice when it did snow that those who were not building a snowman were engaged in a serious snowball fight. The real winners of the season were the parents who will not have to replace worn out skis next season. We all found out that being in the Lake Conference really did mean being in the lake! The boys team finished in State and the irls team finished in State. If we can do that goo on frozen lakes, just wait till next year's snow! The varsity team finished with a 3-16-2 record for the season. They finished tied for 7th with a con- ference record of 3-11-0. The Eagles first conference win came against St. Louis Pak, 4-3. The pucksters added to this by beating Cooper, 5-1 and the cake eaters Edina 3-2. All in all, the season was a success, with the players giving their best every game.
