A graduate of Winona State University, Mr. Connaughty has taught Industrial Arts, Phy Ed., Biology and Adult Education in Eden Prairie Schools. He organized Eden Prairie's first football and track teams and has coached football, basketball, track and baseball. After receiving a M.A. degree from the University of Minnesota in 1963, he gradually worked his way into administration. His current position as Assistant Principal affords him a variety of responsibil- ities. Among the multitude are: master of scheduling of all classes, serving on the salary committee, officiating at conference and state track meets, initiating pilot programs, organizing faculty Christmas parties and the infamous Hal-Con Open, attending Prom, Graduation, athletic and music events, and supervising the workings of each school day. Mr. Connaughty exhibits his community spirit as President of the Lion's Club, Secretary of the Boosters, President of the Principals As- sociation, an active participant of St. Edward's Church, and a Little League coach. In an effort to give true meaning to the term Jack of All Trades, he has even engaged in shelf and cupboard building in the Middle School Home Ec. room. A final accomplishment: Mr. Connaughty is a noted survivor of mod- ular scheduling. The senior class and the Yearbook Staff take pride in dedicating this yearbook to him. Varsity Football 63 The Varsity football team had its post season plans dashed early in the sea- son and then settled down to show that it was one of the conference powers. After a first game victory over Chaska, the Eagles suffered two home losses in which Hutchinson and Mound capitalized on EP mistakes. With these early season miscues out of their system, the Eagles went on to roll over opponents for six consecutive winsegetting stronger and stronger as the season progressed. Wins over Waconia and New Ulm set the stage for the Eagles' brilliant close-out of the '77 season. A subsequent shutout of Buffa- lo, a Homecoming victory over Orono and a 350 yard ground roll-up against Shakopee led the team to a final battle with Glencoe, who only two weeks earlier had beaten the state's No. 1 team. It was agreed by all that this game was one that would go down in EP annuals as one of the school's best football games. It was a first class way for a first class team to end a first class season. Varsity Cross Country The 1977 Eden Prairie Boys Cross Country Team became the first team in the history of Eden Prairie High School to qualify for state competition. Aside from winning the Region 2AA Title, the Eagles were also Suburban West Conference Champions, champions of the Buffalo and Rockford Invi- tationals, and runners up in the New Prague Invitational. Senior co-cap- tains Rob Beyer and Steve Van Guilder had excellent seasons, placing first and second in almost every race. Both were also All Conference. The Boys Junior Varsity, led by William Peper and Greg Beauvais, won the conference meet for the second year in a row and were defeated by only one of the 60 teams that they ran against. The Girls Cross Country Team completed their firsr varsity season. Al- though they were an extremely young team, they did quite well. Led by senior captain Kathy Upton, an All Conference performer, the Eagles placed fourth in the conference. Pam Van Guilder had an excellent season and promises to be a fine runner for the Eagles in the coming two years. Row 1: Lynn Wannebo, Trish Jarrett, Andrea Karlson. Captains: Rob Beyer, Jon Costello The senior dominated team saw strong pefor- mances from its captains, Bob Brown, Craig Skeim, and Mitch Boomer. Dave Keiski was an outstanding defensive guard. Co-captains Judy Busch and April Kakach and upper classmen like Carolyn Agrimson, Angie Teiken and Wanda LaBlanc used their experience to steady the team. Much improvement was shown by sophomores Lori Marriott, Shelly Blunt, Laura Gea- son, and Kathy Nelson. The season high- light was the poise shown in holding on to defeat Buffalo 39-31. A new 7th and 8th grade program will greatly aid the future success of Girls Basketball in Eden Prairie. Row 1: R. Johnston, S. Spartz, C. Klein, K. Johnson, B. Emswiler, W. Madden, S. Larson. With the leadership of Co-captains Russ Lew- is and Kevin Bruesehoff and Beth Hustad and Beth Bertelson, the teams increased their depth greatly this year. The teams ended the season with Boys 6-10, Girls 5-7. High scorers, Russ Lewis and Beth Hustad were elected MVPs by their teammates. MIP went to Dave Bakken and Teresa Nelson. In regional competi- tion, the girls team placed 6th and the boys team placed 7th of 14 schools. The Cross Country Ski Team has been growing steadily since its inception four years ago. With a total of 29 skiers, this was Eden Prairie's largest team to date. The boys team record was 5-6, but with 11 sophomores on the team, the future looks bright. The girls team record was 7-4 and could easily have been 9-2 had things not gone awry, for a couple of skiers in one tri- angular meet. Kathy Upton, Becky Hill, and Janet Tabat, are the senior members of the girls team. Kathy Upton, who finished near the top in all races, has competed in all four years of the CC Ski program.
