From the start, the Eagles were fi- gured to be a no--count team. No one really believed they were a conference power when they squea- ked by Hutch 8-6. No one believed they were anything but lucky when the field goal beat Chaska in the final seconds of the Homecoming game. The doubters were still there when the Eagles took their undefeated record to Mound in the last game of the regular season. Mound, rated as a conference power ear- lier, could be the spoiler. How- ever, at the end the score was Ea- gles 27, Mound 7. Finally, people believed. We were conference champs: Number 1! Visions of a state championship loomed only 3 post-season games in the future. Up North some distance, however was a town named Mora. Mora had Football a football team also. Mora's foot- ball team was also undefeated. They were also a conference Cham- pion. The Eagles lost to Mora. They lost big, 38-0. So a sort-of-a- bubble season popped, but not af- ter it had floated much higher than anyone expected. Why were the Eagles able to do so well? Togethemess , said Coach John Ryski. We played well with what we had. Pat Meyers said some fans. It was Pat's toe that put the 3 on the board in the closing seconds against Chaska--it was Pat's grab of a Flom pass that turned a Glencoe upset into an Ea- 'gle win in the final seconds. Others said it was Bill Fitzgerald's running. Others said it was DEFENSE. Coach Ryski and the team knew it was everyone on the team--a11 of them believers. Individual honors were achieved by Brian Mikkelson, Ron Doig and Dave Keiski for being All-Confer- ence. Brian Mikkelson was voted by the team as Most Valuable Pla- yer. Most improved player was Paul Peterson. The team captains were Brian Mikkelson, Pat Meyers, and Dave Burkstrand. TOP LEFT: Billy Fitzgerald. FAR LEFT: Coach Terriquez. LEFT: Meyers in a hole. The girls volleyball team had a season with an outcome of 7 wins and 7 losses. A high point in the season accord- ing to Coach Nancy Pudas was going into the Chaska game with a 3-0 conference record, one of the best records the team had ever had. Their win over Shakopee was also truly an exciting occasion because the Eagles had been beaten by Sha- kopee last season. Coach Pudas was also very pleased with the large number of partici- pants, a total of 72 girls came our for the team with 12 on varsity, 18 on Junior varsity and 42 on B- squads. Players receiving awards were Jill Holte, most valuable player and all conference. Carolyn Agrimson was voted most improved player. Other outstanding players were Kris Stetter winning most enthusiastic player--and Debbie Karulf, most consistent player. The team improved their skills over the pre- vious year, but so did the other teams in the conference. This accounts for their position staying low in conference standings. However, there Were some bright spots. Liz Formico did well in the sub sectional tournament, wimiing three of four of her matches. She qualified for sectionals and was also voted most valuable player. Beth Mitchell was voted most im- proved player. Coach Bill Salinger felt the high point of the season was the team's 3-2 win over Mound. The low points of the season were their two 2-3 losses to Shakopee. In the sub-sectional tournament, the team lost 1-4 to Wilmar. The varsity line up-for most match- es was as follows: lst singles Liz Formico; 2nd singles, Beth Mitch- ell; 3rd singles, Nancy Hayes; var- sity doubles; Sharon Malmer, Hei- di Blackburn, Kathy Nelson, and Julie Erickson. Sharon Malmer and Heidi Black- burn were the co-captains of the team. O .. .v .0 O 0.9 O. 6 .o O O O O . 9 w: .0 V :3: I u . -A - ? .- .. $3 - $59k g -. - , LEFT: Beth Mitchell goes for a backhand. Coach Larry Anderson felt the whole season was successful be- cause of the great kids who were on the team. The Coach felt that they all worked hard, got along well, and maintained a great sense of humor throughout the season. A Special 'high point came when the Whole team was able to ad- vance to the region meet by plac- ing third in the sub region. A gec- ond place finish in the conference meet also looks good in the record book, but the team felt they could have done better there. There were 16 runners on the team. Those winning awards were Tim Wilson, most improved and Rob Beyer, most valuable. Also, Rob Beyer and Mark Hanson were named all conference. Coach Marcy felt that the teams overall skills developed greatly during the season due to the help of assistant coach Kevin-Hogan. The teams best performance of the season was the mound meet where the team increased their score by 15 points from the last home meet with Edina West was another occasion of good performance. Individual awards were given to Holly Davis who all confer- ence award and most valuable player for the second year in a row. The conference record was 3 and 5, and non-conference was 1 and 3. In tournaments, The Eagles placed 8th at Fridley, 3rd at Bloomington Jef- ferson, and 6th at Columbia Heights. The team lost to Prior Lake in the first round of Sub-Regions to end the team season. The Eagles had beaten Prior Lake earlier in the season, but Were handicapped by the loss of three starters at sea- son's end. Coach Pat Marcy stated that the Eagles Were actually a better team than the record indi- cated because they had a very tough schedule, especially in Non-Con- ference matches. HOWever, after the team lost in sub-regions, outstanding perfor- mer Mike Johnston continued provide wrestling fans with excite- ment as he went to the State Tournament for a third straight year. Eden Prairie posted their first shutout victory of the season. The Mound team was previously undefeated in conference action, and they are the conference leaders. Scott Harris, a sophomore winger, scored Eden Prairie's lst goal mid- way into the first period. Then, with only 2:50 remaining in the first period, Dan Lobstein scored, and Eden Prairie had a 2-0 lead. Mound fought hard during the second period, but the fai led to score, and Eden Prairie still held the lead 2-0. Eden Prairie's Jeff Gilbertson scored the last goal of the game in the third period to secure the victory for the Eagles. Eden Prairie outshot the Mohawks 33-32. It was our biggest win of the sea- son, said Hockey coach Dick Emahiser. In the locker room, all of the Eagles hockey players knew that tonight's game with Wayzata was going to be the biggest game of the year. Most of the guys were a little nervous, because it was going RIGHT: Mike Arens checks opponent. to be our first play-off game. We all knew that Wayzata was a good team with one exceptional for- ward, Keith Pauly. The coaches told us to stay tight on Pauly, and all of their other forwardS. Game time was approaching faster every 1ime we checked the clock, and the coaches had done all they could, for now it was up to all of us players. Wayzata quickly controlled the opening face-off, and from there on, the whole first period. Our men never really paniced under their intense pressure, thus frus- trating Wayzata enough so they lost some concentration. Both Wayzata and our team were hust- ling, but they had more control and depth on their side. There was really only one thing Wayzata couldn't do and that was score. Close to the end of the first per- iod. Wayzata couldn't believe that Eden Prairie was still in the game, and this created a few mis- takes on their side. Then, with only two minutes remaining in the first period, Way'zata slipped a shot past our goalie to make it 1-0 after one period of play. We came out flying in the second period and Scott Harris tied the game up within the first five min- utes. I think we not only shocked their team, but their fans were now silent. Wayzata fans were now silent. Wayzata then knew that We came to play, and play We did. The rest of the second period was mostly up and down the ice, while each team had chances to score. Wayzata then scored on a screen shot with only one minute remaining in the second period. We left the ice down by a goal, but we all knew that the game was still a toss-up. Both of our teams played strongly in the third period, and it was a fairly equal period. Wayzata knew that we had to open up a little and try to score, so they just kept us towards the center of the rink. Finally, Wayzata caught us with only one man back and the fired a slap shot past our goalie with only tvvo minutes left in the game. We still didn't give up, although we never scored again, and the game ended in a 3-1 victory for the Wayzata Trojans. The game was very disappointing to our guys, but we all played well and we surprised many people. The post-season schedule for the Eagles ended abruptly in the first round of the sub-regions as they lost to eventual State Champs Prior Lake. The Eagles were a spoiler team through most of the schedule. Though they themselves could not get to the top of the conference standings, on several occasions, they knocked opponents out of that top place -- including Wa- conia, Hutchinson, and Chaska. Chaska, the eventual conference champion, suffered two defeats at the hands of the Eagles; one of those defeats was a no hitter, pitched by Mark Rustad. The Eagles lost their first game in sub region playoffs tO-S to Prior LakeT to close out the season. Two Eagles, Dave Burkstrand and Mark Rustad, were All-Conference selections. Coach Jerry Porter stated that John Norton performed best among the players on the team overall, but the best round of the season was a par 73 shot by Jeff Eaton in Lion's Invitational. The team voted John Norton Most Valuable Player and Tom Hagen most improved player. Girl's Golf The girl's golf team shot their way to about a 500 season under the first-year leadership of coach Bob Ostlund. A highlight of the season for the team was a fourth plaoe finish in the Edina Invitational, something to be quite proud of considering the quality of opposition that was there. Coach Ostlund was also proud of the team's 7th place finish in the Sectional Tournament, especially because they didn't have their best day and still finished well. Margaret Listberger was voted MVP by the team. Ostlund stated that if there were a S-team conference for girl's golf, he was almost sure she would have been selected to an All-Conference team. Also, there was a fac- ulty-senior volleyball game, which nobody could tell who won. All-in-all another successful St. Selgae's days -- if not for the na- tional record book, at least for a little fun. Interim Eden Prairie students participated in a variety of Spring- time sports, cooking classes, arts and crafts classes, and some miscellaneous activities during the '77 one- day Interim. Unlike former interims, which took place in the win- ter, the '77 interim happened on a sunny day in May. This allowed for a different group of outside activities to take place. Some of the activities that students participated in were soccer, tennis, scuba diving, cooking, arts, canoeing, camping, bike riding, rock Climbing, tour- ing various places of business, and visiting certain restaurants . In January, EPHS actors teamed with actors from Chaska High School to present a festival of one- act plays. One of the one- act plays also performed in the high- school league one-act contest. The one act that went to contests was THE RED CARNATION, a situation comedy where two men meet and discover that they wish to see the same woman though nei- ther knows her. Leads in the play were Stephanie Cooper, David Hone, and Jon Schee. Jon and Da- vid won awards for their perfor- mances at the contest. Another one-act that was presen- ted by Eden Prairie students was THE STILL ALARM. This was a theater-of-the-absurd type play where people worried about their hotel accomodations as the hotel was burning down. Student direc- tor John Monson worked with leads Kirby Bennett and Tim Sawyer to perform the play. In March, EVERYBODY LOVES OPAL, a comedy, was performed. Aside from the presentation of Diplomas, the emphasis of the ceremony seemed to be on the graduates themselves as 10 seniors spoke on a variety of topics. Grad- uates were also featured in band and choir numbers. Mr. William Terriquez also spoke; Principal David Flannery, scheduled to speak, glanced at an encroaching thunderstorm and gave as a de- parting present to the Class a prom- ise to give his speech to the class of '78. Graduating seniors who Spoke were Randy Allar, Amanda Bell, Bill Brown, Kathy Casey, Paul Keiski, Margaret Listberger, Pat Meyers, John Monson, Jim Semrad, and Becky Upton. Though rain threatened before and ddring the ceremony, the diplomas stayed dry. After a brief punch and cookies reception in the cafeteria, many of the graduates went to the par- ent-sponsored and chaperoned all- night party.
