Put that red crepe paper over the lights. Neat! Yes, folks, it's Homecoming! The first major event of the week was the annual Toilet Bowl, a football game between the High School and the Middle School faculties, held Tuesday after- noon. The 'Highs' won, for the first time in three years, before a half-frozen crowd of hecklers. Wednesday was dubbed Backwards Day, so the class schedule was re- versed, and everybody was suppos- ed to dress, walk, and think back- wards. ThuIsday was Formal Day, where everybody was, you know, s'pose to wear formal type stuff. This was also Sadie Hawkins Day, wherein the girls were supposed to take their favorite guy to lunch, and even dance with him in the darkened cafetorium. After the girl's volleyball game that night, everybody watched the bonfire and smashed up a junk car. All of this led up to a disappointing 36-6 loss to Shakopee in the big game itself. The Homecoming dance was held Saturday Night in a new and different p1ace--on a riverboat on the mighty Mississ- ippi. Once again EP students welcomed the Winter break with the joyous Christmas pepfest. A plethora of skits filled the bill as usual, but absent this year was a pie-in-the- face gag. There was so much act- ivity that suddenly there was no time left for the choir to perform before Santa Clauski had to come out. Santa sat amid Cheerleaders and jock-elves with his micro- phone, handing out awards to worthy and unworthy alike. 77 St. Selgaeis Days For the second year in a row the mid-winter blahs fell victim to St. Selgae's Days -- four days tMar lO-lSl of festive diversion planned by the Student Council. Nostalgia was the theme for Wed- nesday. Students dressed in styles dating back to the 50's and earlier. The movie, American Graffitti was shown in the morning. During 7th hour, the Senior-Faculty bas- ketball game took place; there would have been controversy about who won, except few peo- ple cared. Thursday morning, the Talent show presented a very diverse ar- ray of talent from students and fa- culty. Cheryl Pohlman won two free meals at the Lincoln Del for her best performance award. Oth- er great talent included Dave Kei- sld performing his own composition, and Jon Westerhaus won Funniest Performance Award for his Elvis im- personation, The Prize: a kiss from Sherry Otis. Superstars competitions were also held during the show. Friday was half-day, on which students were to dress as animals. Most of the day was filled with a cageball tournament between the classes tthe Seniors woni. The crowning of the superstars winners was also staged. A Fifties dance scheduled for that night at Forest Hills had to be cancelled. On Sat- urday night there was a public showing of American Gaffitti. 78 80 M usical Review The Eden Prairie High School mu- sical production for the fall of 1975 was Musical Review, in which selected parts of three Broadway hits, OLIVER, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, and MUSIC MAN Were performed in a review of the recent EPI-IS full-length perfor- mances of these shows in past years. little time was Spent on plot development for each musi- cal, as the show concentrated on the music. Hard working cast and band mem- bers were under extra pressure as performances were regrettably scheduled at the end of the first quarter, a time already crowded with homework and study. There were a few 'backstage problems, including late arriving scripts and some complaints about the unavail- ability of parts for non-choir mem- bers. The only onstage trouble occurred when the curtain cable broke during zealous efforts to get it unstuck in the first perfor- mance, requiring the curtain to be pulled by hand for the remain- ing performances. Despite early problems, the show itself was a colorful success, with each performance tNov. 5-8rwe11 attended. Emmet Stark, David Stark, and Kathy Novack directed. Mitch Jacques played OLIVER, Herb Bloomquist and Sharon Malmer were the leads in FIDDLER, and Brian Olson and Wendy Geason starred in MUSIC MAN. . S .31.. 3g 81 Fiddler On The Roof Music Man 82 01 i ver Orchestra 83 Other Drama . . . 3 One-Act Plays Three one act plays were put on by the drama department this Spring, with one receiving several honors. Here We Are, starring Brian Komschlies, Becky Lacy, Herb Bloomquist, Sue Gilhoi and Liz LeMay, and directed by Kathy Novack, won the Suburban West sub-regional competition. In addi tion, Brian, Becky, Herb and Sue won outstanding acting awards at the Suburban West Festival in Glencoe. The amusing play was of a newly married couple going by train to their honeymoon. The two other plays were both comedies. Picnic on the Battle- field starred Bill Baker, Kirby Bennet, Herb Bloomquist twho also directedy and John Sumner. Bill played a soldier whose par- ents visit him and teach him etiquette while on the battle- field. The Man in the Bowler Hat was directed by Brian Olson, and starred Dave Engbritson, Dianne Crawford, Brian Sorenson, Robert Grassel, Joelle Keiski, Herb Bloomquist and John Monson. A contented middle- class couple is intruded on by some classic villians who do some strange things, including blowing their lines. 86 Band d'i Choir Concerts As usual, the Eden Prairie High School Music Department scheduled a variety of events and concerts throughout the year, as well as pre- forming at events such as basketball games or graduation. The bands, under the direction of Mr. Emmett Stark, and the Choirs, under the direction of Mr. David Stark, spent many hours practicing and preparing for their many public appearances, contests, and trips. 87 88 Commencement, The class of '76 graduated on June 3, in an outdoor ceremony on the school football field. The ceremony was quite traditional, as graduates wore the traditional robes, marched in to a processional song, listened to Speakers and musical selections born the band and choir, recieved their diplomas, and mar- ched away to a recessional march. Many students and teachers Spoke at the ceremony. Student speakers were Henry Rusch, David Brandt, Laurie Patterson, Leo Marin, Robert Grassel, Wendy Geason, and Tad Bornhoft. Teachers, Mr. Steve Schultz and Mr. John Ryski also spoke. The Commencement Address was delivered by Sgt. Bob Tyson, an Eden Prairie Public Safety Officer. Class 0f 76 The Speeches dealth with a variety of ideas, but most touched on some of the following themes: graduates expressed appreciation for their education, school, and teachers; teachers remarked that the class of '76 had been a good class; grad- uates were reminded to continue to learn, grow in character, and to generally continue a well-begun process of personal growth and development. After the ceremony, a brief reception in the cafeteria provided everyone an opportunity to extend more personalized congratulations to the class as they sipped a cup of punch. Many graduates then left for an all-night party which was held at one of the local YMCA buildings. 89 Graduation 91 9 ., , -9? 5' '9 9 512?.955'9ng . . i 69 33 - 9t 3 9, H 9 $31. aginA ' 1w ,. In the season's filst game, Hutchin- son overpowered the Eagles 17-8. However, EP came back in their next game to bowl over Waconia 27-8. The most dramatic contest of the season was the home game against Mankato East. After tying 13-13 in regulation time, each time was given a first- and-goal chance from the ten. Both scored the touchdown, but only Mankato East converted to win 20-19. A week later, the gutsy fans braved cold winds to watch the Buffalo Vikings nudge the Eagles 9-8 in a crucial game. The following week, Chaska, as their Homecoming slogan promised, plowed Eden Prairie 26-14. Another disappointment came when the Eagles dropped the first Home- coming game in 13 years at EP. The Shakopee Indians racked-up 28 of their 36 points before the Eagles finally scored their first and last six of the game. In the season's last games, the Eagles continued to fly low, losing to Glencoe 14-48, and posting goose eggs against both Mound and Orono. Eagles Spike 8-4 Record Volleyball began the '75 season with a new coach tMrs. Pudasl, go getter assistant coach Mr. Emahiser, and a volley of wins. Although the team lost three of it's first four games, they won the next seven out of eight to capture 4th place in the Suburban West conference with a 4 and 3 record and an 8 and 4 overall record. The Eagles worked hard all year after a slow start, concentrating on the development of basic skills, agressiveness, and increased teamwork. The season was highlighted by the final game of the year when the Eagles took on the Indians of Shakopee in the subregion play- offs. This game, was to culminate the work of the entire season. Revenge was also a strong motive as earlier in the year, Shakopee defeated Eden Praire at home- coming. 50, this match would be a hard fought one. And hard fought it was, but in the end, the Indians came out scarcely ahead by a score of 18 -13 in the first game and 18-14 in game two. The Eagles were led by co- captains Laurie Hagan and Patty Redmond. Awards went to Cheryl Kerber for most valuable player and all conference. Most improved awards went to Debbie Karuff and Carolyn Agrimson. Altough the Eagles will lose four valuable seniors, next year could prove to be a great one with five returning letterwinners and a successful, talented J.V. and B- squad. Coach Larry Anderson, as he al- ways does, worked runners to their limit; forcing them to extend all their energy over the three mile course. It paid off, particularly for seniors John Sword and Roy John- stone who made the all-conference list. Eden Prairie defeated Waconia, Buffalo, and Shakopee ; and lost to Chaska by one point during regular season meets. Of special interest this year were the new shorts for the team, which were said to con- tain more holes than threads. After a disastrous season two years ago, the Eagles bounced back with a 7-14 season last year, and in '76 a solid 10- 10 record gave them respect- ability in the conference. Though the team was consistent throughout the year, improve- ment was seen in the last part of the season. Coach Bill Holte said the best games of the year were the last two: an 18 point romp over Orono, and Prior Lake game in which, though defeated, the Eagles scored 59 points against one of the better teams in the state. Once again, Don Houghton was a star player; the team's play- maker, feeder, and most consistent scorer. Houghton was leading scorer in the conference. Joe Eickholt was another great shooter for the Eagles, especially in the last half of the season. Excellent rebounding was shown throughout the season by Brian Mikkelson, and Wally Hustad became one of the best rebound- ers in the conference. The Eagles attempted to use the fast break as much as possible in each game. But an excessive number of turnovers plagued them all year, Eden Prairie was elimin- ated in the first post-season tourn- aments game. Statistically, they finished in last place, and had a 0-13 record overall, losing even to Waconia. Coach Nancy Pudas said that emphasis was put on individual improvement and on basic skills. We spent the season just trying to improve ourselves weekly --score more points, commit less errors than the game before. The young Eden Prairie team went against more experienced teams in the conference, and, ujte natural 1y, was lacking in confidence as well as basic skills, but they were out there trying. At the drop of the first puck, the Eagle hockey team grew. They grew in speed, endurance, sldll, hustle, and most of all maturity. The team was young and inexperienced having only 3 seniors on the roster. Throughtout the season, the Eagles fought hard but they were continually stunned by losses in many very close games. Coaches Richard Strokirch and Dick Emahiser tried everything possible to break an early string of 8 losses including changing of lines, juggling positions and trying new and different styles of attack and defense. The team worked hard too, not only at hockey, but at flooding the outside rink in shifts from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. during many cold nights. And the work paid off. The Eagles finally broke the ice of 1-13-1 season with a total team effort in bombing Le Suer for a 17-1 victory. The win was the turning point of the season and gave the Eagles the boost to fly high through the rest of the season, winning 3 of the last 5 games. The strongest game played was the last of the regular season when the Eagles fought the Chaska Hawks to a 6-2 victory. The game was fast skating and full of hard check- ing and sharp, crisp passing. The team ended fourth in Suburban v t + with a 3-7 record. Dan Lobstein led the Eagles in scoring with 18 points and was followed by Henry Rusch and Jeff Gilbertson, both with 17 points. Captains were Dave Brandt, Jeff Gilbertson, and Dan Lobstein. Henry Rusch was awarded both most valuble player and All Conference awards. Next year, the Suburban West Conference will have their hands full in trying to handle the Eagles. With an almost full roster returning, the Eagles, built strongly to believe it - have confidence they will take all next year - or come very close to it! RECORD OPPONENT St . Paul Cntr . The Eagles combined all of these aspects in a successful season. After a slow start, the Eagles took first place in a Bloomington Jefferson Tourney which featured eight top teams. Then, the Eagles pinned down victories in 3 of their next four matches, including an away-victory at Hutch which broke a 45 match winning streak for the Tigers. Most of the grapplers' losses were against tough opponents, such as undefeated Rosemount and conference champions Buffalo. The Bagels were in two other tourneys. In one, labeled the toughest tourney in the state by Coach Pat Marcy, the Eagles placed fifth out of eight teams. The last tourney of the season went to Owatonna, but the Eagles took 2nd. A team highpoint for the season was a sub-region championship in which they achieved a victory over Prior Lake. It Was the first time the Eagles had beat Prior Lake. Junior Mike Johnston claimed many individual honors during the season, including All-conference selection, MVP slection, and qualification for the State Tournament. This year's teams put in strong ef- forts, with the boys having a 4-2 record, while the girls finished The boys defeated Anoka, Blaine, Coon Rapids and Chaska, lost to Bloomington Jefferson and Edina West, while meets with Washburn and Bloomington Lincoln had to be cancelled. The girls defeated Chaska and Edina West, lost to Anoka, and missed chances against Washburn and Lindberg. While there is no actual team captain, coach Byron Anderson said that the boys were led by Todd Bertleson and Mike O'Brian, two excellent skiers, both of whom got as far as regions. In addition, there were several hne skiers among the younger team members. The girls also have a lot of up and coming talent, lending to what should be an outstanding downhill season next year. Besides having to, of course, stay up, says Anderson, a downhill skier has to memorize a course, and learn the most efficient route. In the actual race, the gates come too fast to allow for any decision making. The personal tension at the start of a race, Anderson said, is very great. When the judge says 'Go when ready' it becomes totally a head thing. 119 Cross- Country With little snow to start the year on, the Eagles girl's cross country ski team hill-bounded their way to a successful season. The Eagles girls and guys raced mostly against powerful Lake Conference teams and although they didn't win often, they placed well. Both girls and guys easily defeated Chaska, the only other team in the Suburban West Con- ference. Highlights of the season for girls included the top five Eagles skiers placing in the upper half of a regional tournament against tought Lake Conference teams. The team's total improvement in tech- nique was in itself a high point. The guys' highlight of the season was also the regional meet. Both John Sword and Dave Bell placed high in one of the state's toughest races. A11 contenders were from the Lake Conference and only the best were there because of the district eliminations. The Eagles girls were headed by Maureen Pauly who was voted M.V. P. She placed 15th out of 60 skiers in regions with hardly a space between 15 and i951. John Sword won the M.V. P. award for the guys. As the old saying goes- It was a rebuilding year, for the Eagle Baseball team. With only 2 se- niors, the Eagles finished with a 3-13 season. Although the Eagles couldn't put it all together much this year, they still had the talent. Lead- ing off on that talent was captain Mark Rustad, who was voted M.V. P. . When he wasn't playing at third, he pitched. He slugged his way to a 300-p1us batting average and helped teammates throughout the year. Then came always valuables such as Dave Burkstrand, and Paul Keiski- who were both tough on defense and good lead off hitters. The Eagle's high point of the season was beating Glencoe - TWICE. They were a tough team and one of the best in the con- ference. In the first game, Dave Burkstrand went 9 innings to lead the Eagles to a 2-1 win. In game two, Mark Rustad hurled hard against a Glencoe ace, and in the end, the Eagles won 4-0. Next year, the Eagles should haye no excuses.
