The American Field Service pro- gram brought two students to Eden Prairie High School and sent one abroad in the '74-'75 school year. Peter Cuypers, from Belgium, and Lizbeth Nielson, from Denmark were the Europeon visitors to Minnesota. Eden Prairie's man abroad was Kevin Carter, who was the AFS student to Australia in the summer of 1974. 25 WE WERE THE EAGLES To love the game beyond the prize Henry Newbolt; Clifton ChapeU 28 F OOTBALL TOP MIDDLE: Eagles are tough on defense. The 1974 football season started with two non-conference victories, a shutout of Waconia, and peaked with a surprising victory over Mound. From there the season went downhill. After a disappoint- ing loss to Shakopee, the Eagles barely passed by Orono. Then the season ended with three sound defeats. At Mankatd East, the first game of the season, Eden Prairie came back from a 7-0 halftime deficit, capitalizing on a fumble recovery for the first TD. A 25 yard pass play from quarterback Jeff East to Greg Yee gave the Eagles their second touchdown, and a third was set up by a 50 yard East to 19 Mankato 14 8 Lakeville 7 EP EP EP 24 Waconia 0 EP 14 Mound 12 EP 14 Shakopee 22 EP 20 Orono 19 EP 14 Buffalo 29 EP 8 Glenco 16 EP 0 Chaska 32 Marty Raths pass play. At Lakeville, a 40 yard touchdown pass from East to Raths late in the fourth quarter, plus a two point conversion was all that was needed to gain a narrow 8-7 victory. After shutting out a hapless Wac- onia team, the Eagles faced Mound, formerly of the tough Lake Conference. As 8 to 1 underdogs, the Eagles needed to play a solid game to stay in contention for the championship of the newly formed Suburban West Conference. The game, played at Eden Prairie, pro- vided fans with the best play of the season. Eagles needed to play a solid game to stay in contention for the Cham- pionship of the newly formed Sub- urban West Conference. The game, played at Eden Prairie, provided fans with the best play of the sea- son. In the second quarter, with Mound ahead 6-0, the East- Raths com- bination hit with a 39 yard touch- down pass. A two point conversion gave Eden Prairie an 8-6 halftime lead. Mound took a 12-8 lead in the third quarter. Thru- out the fourth quarter the Eagle defense held Mound from any further scoring. Eden Prairie recaptured the lead on an 87 yard touchdown drive, which included good runs by East and Scott Johnson, along with key pass receptions by Raths, Yee, and Wally Hustad. The Shakopee game, however, was rather disappointing, an indi- cation of how the remaining season would turn out. The Eagles did not score until the second half, while the defense had trouble con- taining Shakopee thru much of the game. Eden Prairie had hopeful but diminished chances of becom- ing conference champs. The Homecoming game against Orono was the most climatic game of the year. With the Eagles be- hind 19-12 in the fourth quarter, East led the offense to a touchdown in four plays, then passed for a two point conversion to take the lead with seconds remaining. With the losses to Buffalo and Glenco, Eden Prairie lost all hope of becoming champs. The season ended with a traumatic loss to Con- ference Champion Chaska. The team followed tradition in being one of the most neglected teams in the school, but this did not discourage them, as they trained everyday, preparing for the three mile course at the up- coming meet. Although still towards the back of the pack, most members will re- turn next year for what should be an improved team. TOP RIGHT: Tim Johnson, Gary Pletsch, 8 Tom Johnson. In Dis- tricts, the team defeated Blake in first round play, but lost to Orono tSuburban West champsr in the sec- ond round. This was Eden Prairie's third year of girls volleyball competition. The team has been mainly in the build- ing process, while trying to make a place among the tough teams in the conference. With their spirit- lifting captain Liz Tracy, the net- ters were enthusiastic throughout the season, settling dOWn to serious play for each game. Coach Krista Dommer expects much from next year's team, with several exper- ienced players returning. Special mention goes to Debbie Crowe, named to the All-confer- ence team; Lauren Franson, most improved player; and Laurie Hagen, most valuable player. Eden Prairie finished with a 7-14 over- all record, and a 6-13 conference record which placed them 6th in the conference. Guy Treanor and Marty Raths, as starting guards, provided the play- making while forwards Dale Ker- ber and Don Houghton provided the scoring punch. Center Bill Neuen- feldt completed the usual starting five. Don Houghton was the high scorer for the team and regularly hit for twenty or more points in a game. In District Playoffs, Houghton's last second free throw moved the Eagles past Minnehaha Academy in the first round. However, the Eagle season ended in the 2nd round of districts when they could not shut off Mound's hot outside shooting. The Eagles went down 58-52 in their last contest. But the team did achieve a respectable 5-5-0 conference record, placing third behind Mound and Orono. The injuries began early in the season, as Bruce Eaton suffered a broken leg, Brad Boerger broke an ankle, and Jeff Gilbertson re- ceived a seperated shoulder, caus- ing each to miss the remaining season. In addition, Jeff East missed several games with an in- jured ankle, Coach Richard Stroh- kirch shuffled lines, but the team could not adjust to the loss of personnel. However, there were several not- able performances gives throughout the season. Greg Yee and Mike Blood were outstanding on defense, as Was Jeff East at center, Winger Scott Johnson was high scorer with 13 goals and 17 assists. M$ 43 GRAPPLERS STR U G GLE The Eden Prairie wrestlers had a tough season, having lost many seniors from last year's conference champion team. This year the team was in the development stage. Most of the wrestlers were underclassmen, so prospects for future years look good. Tenth grader Mike Johnston made the best showing this season. In the 105 pound weight class, Mike placed fifth in Districts, third in Regions, and was the only EP wrestler to go to State. In the five team take down tourney at Wa- conia, Juniors John Agrimson and Tom Johnson placed first in their respective weight class. The team record was 3-4-1 in conference matches, putting the Eagle sixth in the standings. The Eagles finished their third year of competition with a record of 7 wins and 3 losses -- good for a third place conference position. Bad weather forced many cancella- tions at the start of the season, leading to a cramped round of sche- duled and re-scheduled matches with little time for practice. Brian Mickelson played consistently well at the number one singles posi- tion, finishing with a 6-4 record. Mike Bachman was 6-2 at number 2 singles, and Todd Flom, in his first year of competition, finished 5-5 at third singles. The team of Bill Baker and Paul Gjersvik played very well at first doubles finishing at 9-1. The second doubles posi- tion was played by many at various points in the season, including Dave Frankland, Bruce Eaton, Steve An- derson, and Mike Halverson -- and posted a 6-4 record. Everyone seemed to choke in the districts and regions but most play- ers will return in '76 for another chance. 61 62 G OLF The 1975 Golf team had a rather poor season only partly because of weather conditions which kept the team indoors until late April. The golfers finished with a 9-7 confer- ence record, and placed fifth in the conference tournament. Kevin Carter was named to the all- conference team, as Well as being voted EP's most valuable. Mike O'Brien carded the best score for nine holes -- 34. Coach Jerry Porter's high expecta- tions for district play were squashed by the bogeyman as the Eagles placed twelfth in the twenty-four team field. At the first annual Eden Prairie Lion's Club Invitational, the Eagles placed fifth out of seven teams at Edenvale. KNEELING: John Herzog, Scott Marriot, Andy Hastings, Pete Westerhaus, Bruce Smith. After a few cancellations, the first meet was with Glencoe and Hutchinson. Liz Kasid and Julie Johnson took first and third respectively in the 100 yard dash. Patty Redmond placed second in the high jump, and the long jump was won by Robyn Blood. In the conference meet, held at Chaska, Julie Johnson, Tracy Scanlon, Carla Salentine, and Liz Kasid won the 440 yard relay. The sprint medley team, consisting of Kasid, Salentine, Johnson, and Lori Anonsen, also took first. Other record-breaking performances were given throughout the Season by Debbie VanGuilder, Wendy Geason, Karen Twite, Kathy Horan, Sharon Swirtz, and Jodi Johnson. Jodi Johnson was also voted MVP by the team. Coach Krista Dommer was very pleased with the year's enthusiastic team. The boys track team had a poor start this year, as with many other spring sports. Practice was held in snow, water, or inside because of the poor condition of the school's track. Nevertheless, coaches Bill Terriquez and Tom Boerger worked their team hard all season for good results. The season was a record breaker in which new school records were set and then broken again. The Eagles ended the Conference season in third place behind Glencoe and Mound. Twelve men qualified in thirteen events for the Region meet. These included: Jay Gilbertson, Steve Makie, Bill Fitzgerald, Steve Sal- entine, Steve VanGuilder, Doug Quiram, Scott Duncanson, Pat Meyers, John Sw0rd, Marty Raths, Dave Bell, and Dave Brandt. In the Regions, Eden Prairie took third place behind co-titlists MOund and Litchfield. Dave Brandt took the only first for Eden Prairie in the Pole Vault at 12' 6 . The eight qualifiers for the State meet were Jay Gilbertson, Dave Brandt, Steve Makie, Bill Fitzger- ald, Steve Salentine, Doug Quiram, Marty Raths, and Pat Meyers. W 105 THESTORY Li'l Abner, a humerous musical comedy, was staged November 13 thru 17. Two thousand people viewed the performances. Many students were involved, in- cluding 52 players on-stage, 19 Concert Band Musicians in the Orchestra, plus many students in the various crews and extra services. The Directors for the play were teacheis Emmett Stark, David Stark, Fred Baumann, Pam Unter- naehrer--and students Holly Pearson and Dale Kerber. The story of the show takes place in the town of Dogpatch, and centers around Jubilation T. Corn- pone, a revered was hero, long since dead, but immortalized by a statue in the town square. The story concers Li'l Abner and the outgoing Daisy Mae, who is determined to marry the reluctant bachelor. She tries to achieve this by catching Li'l Abner in the Sadie Hawkins Day Race. Meanwhile, Dr. Finsdale, a gover- ment researcher, declares Dog- patch the most unnecessary town in the whole U. S. of A. Senator Phogbound warns his con- stituents that the town will be bombed unless something worth- while is found. The Dogpatchers search in vain, until Abner reveals his mysterious Yokumberry tonic which changes the scrawny Dog- patchers into handsom muscelmen. A plot continues to thicken into a web of intrigues concerning the fate of Dogpatch, the marriage of Li'l Abner and Daisy Mae, the evil machinzations of Senator Phogbound and General Bullmoose who try to double-Cross Abner to obtain his magic tonic. Expectedly, things end happily with the marriage of Abner and Daisy Mae and a final song of tribute to Jubilation T. Cornpone. BELOW RIGHT: Larry Doig dresses the part for grub day. Homecoming week was loaded with events in an attempt to involve every student in the festivities. A pushball tourna- ment, dress-up days, movies, the Toilet Bowl, the football game, and the all-class party were the major event scheduled. The pushball tournament was held between the classes over a two day period. Little talent was needed as each person contributed to the mob effort of forcing the giant pushball over the opponent's goal line. Another scoring method was to knock down or otherwise inter- fere with the opposing players themselves. The seniors won. On four different days of the week students dressed grubby, formally, 'fifties style, and in the school colors. Fifties day included a show of Beach Blanket Bingo starring Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello. The Three Stooges and Marx Brothers movies were also shown during the week. The High School staff went down in defeat to the Middle staff 12-6 in the Second Annual Toilet Bowl. That made the High School staff 0-2 in the series. The Friday night football game against Orono was chilly and drizzly, but exciting to watch. The Eagles came through with a suspenseful 20- 19 victory over the Spartans to top off the week. , Coronation ceremonies, a cus- tom for many years, were not held, as the Student Council decided that it involved only a small amount of students. A full hour of fun and getting out of class. It was held on Thursday this year so that no one would decide to start their Christmas vacation early. First the band played a few songs while the cheerleaders provided the choreography. Then the com- bined choirs sang some familiar and and not so familiar carols. Then, finally, out came Santa Clauski, escored by the Senior reindeer. He sat down in his throne, with the reindeer and cheerleaders at his feet. Then he proceeded to give out presents to the boys and girls who have been pretty good all year, 111 112 BAND, CHOIR SING 8z PLAY C ON CERTS As in past years, Eden Prairie High School's various bands and choirs provided musical entertainment and inspiration on a variety of occas- sions. The Choirs, directed by David Stark provided several concerts throughout the year. The Concert Choir also sang at the Graduation ceremony. The Concert Choir also traveled to Pine Island and Manka- to to perform for other schools. The Band program led by Emmet Stark, featured a Concert Band and a Jazz ensemble, and the more in- formal Pep Band which played at basketball games. The Band tra- velled to Alexandria to perform at the high school there in addition to giving their usual presentation of concerts throughout the year. 113 114 I N TERIM Once again, Interim replaced reg- ular class schedules for three days in February. Several skiing trips in- cluding one to Big Sky, Montana were well attended. However, not only skiers travelled. Several stu- dents went to Washington D. C. , and a few took the opportunity to travel with families to farther re- gions of the country. Locally, students found themselves encountering a variety of different activities. Many programs and classes were offered in the areas of cooking, tours, arts and crafts. Some courses added to the program in '75 included Yoga, Tennis at Macalaster College, and Comb- ination Winter camp and rock climbing. ': Ol' . t L 0- Rick Rechow and T Mark Hoel is ready. SELGAE DAY I w; e ; MN , a .,- d om etin for The teachers provided an entertaining BarbershOp Quartet. gignRedmon C P g Snow Days? Not anymore. The tra- ditional winter festivities appeared under a new name with several new concepts about what the celebration would be about. For the record, St. Selgae Day be- came the new name for a festive time in March. SELGAE was derived from a backwards spelling of EAGLES, and St. comes from some- one's intuition. The occasion involved a rather memorable talent show in which several students performed seriously and well, and many teachers acted like a bunch of idiots. Also, simi- lar to Homecoming there was no selection of a king and queen by a traditional voting process. However, several endeavoring students and teachers wanted to be a king or queen bad enough to enter into var- ious competitions for the coveted crowns made of paper mache. The winners were Queen, Trish Horan, King, Tom Moran. t' a Julie Sheridan and Trish Horan shared their talent with all. iwigmgm 33:3,; Mrs. Bell tries her hand at hammering. Several key features in the new approach to the idea of student council involved eliminating the elective process and making council membership open to interested volunteers--re- writing the basic constitution of the Counci1--and taking a much more active role in the planning of act- ivities such as Homecoming and St. Selgae's Day twhich had been Snow Days prior to the Council's new leadership. t Council members were divided into several committees including an academic affairs committee, and a student affairs committee. There was little doubt that the new Student Council of '74-'75 was a much more visible and active organization than had been true in the past. GRADUATION Commencement exercises for the Class of '75 were held Monday, June 2. Though plans had been made to have the ceremony out- side, threatening weather forced the choice of the gymnasium in- stead. The Choir and Band performed and several students gave speeches. Stu- dent speakers were Peter Cuypers, AFS student from Belgium, Linda Jaszczak, Barb Coleman, and Lis- beth Nielson, AFS student from Denmark. The main speaker for the evening was Secretary of State Joan Growe, who stressed that the most import- ant things one could have in life were hope and purpose. Afterwards, with Diplomas in their hands, the Graduates met their relatives and friends in the cafeteria for a brief cookies and punch recep- tion. Later in the evening, most Graduates went to an all- nite party at the Southdale YMCA for dancing, swimming, baby pictures, and pnzes. BELOW: Guest speaker, Secretary of State, Joan Growe.
