REFERENDUM: Early October, at the beginning of the 73- 74 school year, the Eden Prairie School District, including the High School, faced a funding crisis. The School Board voted unanimously to call for a Referendum in order to solve this problem. They asked all citizens living in School District 272 to vote yes for a referendum which would increase the District's school mill levy by 6 mills. A committee had been appointed in May to study the district's financial problems and provide a sampling of how high a level of education the community wished to support. This committee was named the Quality Education Committee. It appeared that if the Referendum failed, further reduction in the School program, totaling $304, 000 would take place in the 1974-75 school year. Passage of the Referendum would assure that $218,000 of cuts could be re- established. At the time, the district was operating in the red, using emergency funds, which would have soon run out. William Geimer, chairman of the commission stressed that the proposed tax increase did not have an eye towards adding frivolous programs, but toward maintaining the quality of educational program characteristic of the Eden Prairie School system in the past. The Referendum passed easily, with 968 voting yes, and 590 opposed. The affirmative vote demonstrated the de- sire to have a quality educational program for the 1974- 75 school year. WT ,- v ..
