REFERENDUM: Early October, at the beginning of the 73- 74 school year, the Eden Prairie School District, including the High School, faced a funding crisis. The School Board voted unanimously to call for a Referendum in order to solve this problem. They asked all citizens living in School District 272 to vote yes for a referendum which would increase the District's school mill levy by 6 mills. A committee had been appointed in May to study the district's financial problems and provide a sampling of how high a level of education the community wished to support. This committee was named the Quality Education Committee. It appeared that if the Referendum failed, further reduction in the School program, totaling $304, 000 would take place in the 1974-75 school year. Passage of the Referendum would assure that $218,000 of cuts could be re- established. At the time, the district was operating in the red, using emergency funds, which would have soon run out. William Geimer, chairman of the commission stressed that the proposed tax increase did not have an eye towards adding frivolous programs, but toward maintaining the quality of educational program characteristic of the Eden Prairie School system in the past. The Referendum passed easily, with 968 voting yes, and 590 opposed. The affirmative vote demonstrated the de- sire to have a quality educational program for the 1974- 75 school year. WT ,- v .. They won 3 out of 8 games, and won the first play-off game. Though losing the second game, they had team spirit and hope to be back next year to take the title. CROSS COUNTRY The Cross Country team showed improvement in the fall of 1973 by placing fifth in the Valley Conference Meet. Though not yet champions, they moved to the middle of the pack, rather than being at the bottom as they had been in past years. One of the season highlights was a very narrow loss to two conference powers in a home meet. Coach Larry Anderson was proud of all indi- viduals on the team, remarking that they had all improved. They worked hard to achieve that goal and were successful. The team had a record of 8 wins and 1 loss. They tied with Shak0pee for first, in point stand- ing, during the competition of the teams in The Valley Conference. They finished 6th in the state, compared with 5th in state during the 1972-73 season. Coach John Ryski stressed that it would be difficult to name the teams most suc- cessful players, since football is a team sport. However, he did point out that 4 of the 31 seniors were selected to the All Conference Team. They were: Pat Moening--his 2nd year, Jeff Brace, Tom Neidenfeuhr, and Randy Franks. Randy Franks was also selected the most valuable play- er by his teammates. um QQXZWB Q TOP: Preparations. ABOVE: OUR THEME FARMIER DAYS . In Eden Prairie AFS consists of two chapters, an adult and a student. They are the ones who make it possible for Eden Prairie students to go abroad and foreign students to visit Eden Prairie. This year Eden Prairie has been very lucky in having Martine Arm staying here. She is staying with the Pennie F amily. We sent Kay Bennett to Finland and this summer we will be sending Kevin Carter to Austraila. The people who are mainly responsible for the funding and sending students abroad is the adult chapter. The student chapter assists the adults and helps with big projects like the AFS carnival. But one of the big responsiblities of the students is making foreign students comfortable and paying for in school expenses. The student chapter has about twenty members. Mrs. Joly is their advisor and Lisa Soderlind is the Pres. This year the students arranged a short term exchange to Procter, Minnesota. We sent three students and Martine to Procter and they sent five students to Eden Prairie. The purpose of the exchange was to learn what it is like to live with a strange family in strange surroundings. The student chapter also organized the International Days when many AFS students from all over the U. S. visited Eden Prairie High School for a day. ?, illE?YH ,,, .mWW' Now it is almost time to go back home and it won't be easy for me to leave Eden Prairie. After one year you be- come attached to people and to that in which you have been living. I am sure that in the future when I think and talk about Eden. Prairie it will be with a lot of good memories and pleasant feelings. Martine Arm, graduation speechl 20 My AFS experience has really been a growing and learning experience from many viewpoints. Gradually, I learned to understand the cultural differences and to be more tolerant in my judgements. During these last menths I met a lot of people coming from different back- grounds and I think the result of such expos- ures has improved my understanding of human relationships. I have been asked about differences between American and Swiss people. I would describe American people as being more friendly and talkative at the tSwiss people have the reput- ation to be especially reservedI, but as being more superficial in their relationships among individuals. My school in Geneva is very different from Eden Prairie High School. In Switzerland, school is based on academical work studies. discipline ia srricter and the work required by the teachers is quite heavy. To me the Ameri- can I-Iigh School seems more like a social place where you can attend a variety of classes, participate in many school activities tsports, musicI and where you can meet people and talk a lot. In Switzerland the choice of classes is limited, and there are far fewer social activities. Among the impressions and experiences I will share with my friends and relatives in Switzer- land, I won't forget to talk about Minnesota and its natural beauty. Indeed, inspite of the too long Winter, I genuinely like Minnesota with its beautiful lakes, its vast prairies and forests and its abundant wild life. l704hlte. byM WINTER Crisp days of fall lead to the frost-bitten chills of winter. The first game of the District 18 playoffs against Minneapolis Vocational loomed for the Eagle Basketball Team. They emerged with a victo'ry, 58-34 and advanced to the District Quarter finals. Their season ended in the hands of Orono where the Eagles were convincingly beaten, 73-42. The victory over Vocational did two things; it provided some relief from the previously unbroken list of defeats accumu- lated in a long season of winless nights containing only a speckling of almosts, and it perhaps helped some to see what Coach Bill Holte had known all along -- that the sea- son was not totally futile. Why would a team carrying a 0-17 record even TRY to win one or two more games? Pride, determination, the refusal to quit, even when many perhaps didn't care if they did quit. Holte said of the team, that they never quit:' and worked as hard as any I have been associated wi The most remembered almost was a 42-43 overtime loss to Shakopee. The Eagles had held the lead most of the game, but couldn't quite seem to finish things off. Coach Holte felt that points, rebounds -- and mistakes, were evenly distributed around the team, and did not want to single out individual players for special praise. They were Jeff Holte 4th, Steve Molitor 5th, Doug Bundy 5th, and Jim Agrimson 5th. In regions Eden Prairie placed 3rd. Jeff Martin and Dave Fosnocht. Hockey Coach Dick Strohkirch was justifiably satisfied with the performance of the 1973-74 pucksters. Su'ohkirch stated that every pre- season goal had been reached and that all players had improved. Most importantly, The Eagles demonsUated that they could play above and beyond the expansion team level. This was dramatically achieved when the Eagles defeated an established conference team--Orono --in the first EP-Orono match-up of the season. Previously, they had not won in conference-- but after the Orono game, the proceeded to beat Chaska, Shak0pee, tie with Golden Valley, and lose a c0up1e of late season overtime games. Though not champions, placing third in the final conference standings was a very successful finish for a relatively new team. To play on an equal basis With an established team, one of the main goals of the season, had been achieved. Team members who were given Special honors and distinction were Jeff Martin, for fastest skat- er, hardest worker, penalty killer--Greg Yee for MVP and All-Conference defenseman--Jeff Earl, all conference center--Scott Johnson, all con- ference honorable mention, high scorer for team --Dave Fosnocht, Penalty Killer, hard skater-- Mike Geimer, goalie, four shut-outs. I stopped and enjoyed the 38 road that so many seem to pass by on their expressway through life. Interim Mini Courses replaced regular classes for three days in F ebruary. Things went better in the program's second year because volunteer help was already in the hles from the pre- vious year. Registration, and simple understanding of what was involved also made things less confusing. Courses of many types were offered: Cross country and down- hill skiing, scuba diving, a variety of cooking, crafts, and arts classes, tours to many nearby industries and companies, a trip to Washington D. C. , ovemite camping, ice fishing, snoeshowing, and games, plus other miscellaneous types of things. Students, faculty members, and members of the administra- tion worked together to plan and develop the program. Mrs. Clymer was an able committee chairperson just as she had been the year before. Optimism for the program's continuance was clouded only by the fact that fewer students registered than in 1973. Too many students elected to remain at home or do their own thing. This difficulty must be solved in the future to guar- antee the Mini-Course future. Those who participated enjoyed the variety provided by dif- ferent activities, different people, and different types of relationships that can be established in different activities. 39 Sno Daze 73- 74 followed good old EP tradition. High- lights of the week were a dress-up day, two snow foot- ball games, a cageball tourney, a faculty-senior bas- ketball game, and of course, coronation and the talent show. In the cageball tourney, the Seniors defeated the soph- omores. At the faculty-senior basketball game the sen- iors won with the help of a funny scoring system. Also, there was the legs contest. Mr. Ryski won that for the faculty men. The Seniors boys contest went undecided. Debbie Lusk and Tim Manning were chosen as king and queen, and reigned over all. 40 ran herwmv Wut. o .. Pat Moening was voted most valuable by his teammates, and he and Jeff East were selected to the A11-conference team. The varsity team consisted of 8 seniors and 8 juniOIs. Although there is no official Valley Conference, in tennis, the Eagles rated 2nd amoung the Valley teams. Brian Mikkelson, a 9th grader, worked his way to 1st singles. Senior, Keith Steinhoff held the best singles record. Sophomores Bill Baker and Paul Gjersvik, had the best double record with 9 wins and 2 losses. Todd Flom advanced to semifinals at, 3rd singles in the District 18, Individual Tournament. The team will lose seniors, Mark Carey tcaptaini, Lance Brace, Dave Flavin, Ernie Holmquist, Keith Steinhoff and Ken Teman. This was the 2nd season in tennis, and the team finished with an 8-4 record over-all. Lettering under- classmen were Mike Bachman, Bill Baker, Paul Gjers- vik and Brian Mikkelson. GOLF TEAM: DOES WELL. The 1974 golf season went very well, in spite of bad weather conditions. The team came out fourth in the conference tourney, and finished the season with a 9-4 record. Coach Jerry Porter said that he thought Jon Westerhaus was the most improved player. Peter Westerhaus did very well, and is only in 8th grade. Kevin Carter and Mike O'Brien had the best aver- ages. Kevin Carter qualified through districts, to the region 5 tourney. He shot an 83, which just missed qualifying for state. GIRLS TRACK The season was a busy, worth-while one for the girls grack team this year. Their first meet was at Golden Valley and they placed second, out of four schools. Co-Captains this year were Liz Tracy and Wendy Geason. Captain was Debbie Crowe. Throughout the season, the team improved. All the relay teams played an important part of the team. The 880 Medley set a new conference record and placed 4th in Dis- tricts. NEW SCHOOL RECORDS were: Julie Johnson-ZZO YD. DASH- 28. 0, Debbie VanGuilder-SSO YD. Mrs. Pam Untemaehrer directed the actors in a story that consisted of humorous situations that oc- curred when the eldest brother of a parentless family, Jeff Adams, tplayed by Tim Riggsi attempts to raise his younger brothers and sister. Comedy results when Wes tplayed by Mark Bomhofti the second oldest son, develops a crush on Eve Mason tplayed by Jean Belli a beautiful southern belle, when she moves in next door. The two younger children Richie tBrian Olsoni, and Hyacinth tCindy Coley drive all the housekeepers away by playing football in the living room, and constantly battling over who is to do the dishes. At the loss of their last housekeeper, Mrs. Lumpkins tplayed by Mary Semradi, Jeff turns to the employment agency for a new housekeeper. Meanwhile, the floating Boutique lady, Peggy Winkel tplayed by Sharon Malmeri st0ps by to make a sale. Jeff mistakes her for the new housekeeper. Time passes, and Jeff hnds himself in a situation of confused affections for Peggy and Lenore Hudson, 3 bubblegum queen and social snob, tplayed by Linda Kaeferi. Hyacinth and Peggy find a common interest in football. As a result of their close relation- ship, Hyacinth tries to convince Jeff to see Lenore as the pretentious snob she really is. All things turn out well for the Adams family when Jeff decides that having a football housekeeper is better than having a bubble gum queen. Other characters and those who played them were Alice, Vicki Wiese; Lulu Trimer, Gin- ny Curtis; Construction Man and Voice, Mark Kopesky; Mrs. Mason, Amanda Bell. But this is all in the past, we have many challenges awaiting us. We must look towards the future instead of concentrating our efforts on the past. Tonight, a piece of our puzzle falls into place. We have frustratedly worked on this piece for 12 years. This is the night that we complete one corner of our life's mystery. It is now time to formulate goals for ourselves.
