Traveling from New York to Frankfurt, Germany, I was with 110 German-bound AFSers and another 90 going to other countries in Europe. Arriving in Frankfurt, the American students went to a Youth Hostel, once an old castle in Russlesheim, a suburb of Frankfurt. We were there a week for orientation on customs and language. My second week was Spent getting acquainted with my German family; Inge, fifteen, and her mother, father, and grand- mother in Machtolsheim, a southern farming village of 1, 120 people. Machtolsheim is twenty miles from Ulm, the city with the highest church steeple in the world. In June, we attended school in the next village. During August, I toured old castles and churches. We took a week long trip into Austria and Switzerland, climbing five mountains, seeing cows and sheep and even find- ing Edelweiss, the famous flower of the Swiss Alp. The last week was spent in the north harbor city of Bremen. Reunited with American AFS -ers for deorientation and staying with another German family. We took a boat ride on the Weser River, had a reception at the city hall, and attended a Parliament meeting where we questioned repre- sentatives. My last day in Germany came, going by train to Frankfurt, and on to my flight for home--USA. I will always appreciate this experience in Germany, for it opened up my life not only to other people and my surroundings, but to myself. My summer in India was a unique experi- ence for me. AFS had a lot to offer me in the way of learning and eXperiencing. I ate with my fingers and was a vegetarian for the most part. As well as assimulating into the Indian culture, I also felt a part of it. I had parents and sisters. The hardest, as well as the funniest part of the whole summer was attempting to speak three different languages and trying to guess which one I was speaking. In the way of learning, I learned and be- came a part of an entirely different way of life. I became subordinate Iwhich is a far cry from being statistician for the foot- ball teami and learned to become a true Indian. I felt Indian and acted Indian, but my physical appearance did not look Indian--I never saw an Indian that was- 5'9 with brown hair and white skin. Experience was an everything thing. A monkey waking Effie tip, a snake escaping a snake charmer and heading in my direction, walking through cow and buffalo herds and bicycling through camel herds were quite ordinary. High points in my summer were seeing the T aj Mahal, one of the seven wonders of the world, and speaking with the prime Minister of India for an hour and one half. However, the most rewarding factor was the people. All three of my host families were exceptional in their own way. The villagers, beggars, princes, gurus and others all helped me see India to a greater extent. All of these factors and more helped me become more aware of others, myself and 1ife--awareness that can be applied everyday of my life. and Marcello to Eden Prairie Marcello Acevedo came to Eden Prairie from his home in Concepcion, Chile. He arrived in the summer of 1971 and lived with the Paul Sailor family tSenior Phil Sailor was his brother'w, while at- tending our high school until graduation in the Spring of 1972. Marcello was one of 92 Chileans who came to the United States through the AFS program. Marcello found many customs to be different in the United States, and remarked particularly on the less formal American schools as compared to the Chilean schools, and the fact that girls were treated differently. He lists as his special interests tennis, soccer, rowing, parties, and girls. When asked what he thought of his stay here, Marcello replied, I enjoy the United States and would like to thank everyone for being so helpful and understanding of me. This year the mixed choir did quite a lot. Activity-wise, it sold fruit to finance their concert trip to Winnepeg. The choir gave concerts in Winnepeg, North Dakota, and at Concordia... For the Dorian Festival held at Luther C ollege in Decorah, Iowa, the choir sent Jane Fifield taltot, Pam Eide tsopranob Gil Darkenwald tbassx and Dan Hone ttenon as representatives. Select Choir included Merrianne Nesbit, Norma Seifert, Kathy Eggan and Vicki Hanson from the scprano section; DeeDee Johnson, Mary McConville, Ieneke Jacobse and Buff Swanson from the altos; Elliott Hayes, Mike Manlove, Gil Darkenwald and Craig Blacklock from the baritone and bass sections; and to equal out the tone, Dan Hone and Randy Johnston from the tenors. Under the direction of Mr. David Stark, the choir even hosted another choir from Watertown, North Dakota. 52 Girls Chorus tL to Ri FIRST ROW: BeckyWedlund, Dawn Serbus, Shirly Felsing, Janna Emerson, Carolyn Smith, Vicky Hanson, Cindy Tangen, Debbie Comstock, SECOND ROW: Lisa Wick, Mary Arens, Linda Peterson, Bonnie Nesbitt. Emily Green, Candy Kokesh, Cindy Pittsley, THIRD ROW: Gwenjasczak, Lori Portinga, Carol Nelson, Sig Schee, Carol Tabot, Debbie Bemtsen Even though the girls chorus is small, they do a great job at singing. Because of the scheduling problems this year, the girls Chorus became quite diminutive. HOWever, size had very little to do with their singing ability. The small group even attempted songs in three parts, Which is quite an achievement and deserves recognition. With so few seniors in it, there appears no problem of graduation causing the chorus to add to the dilemma of size. In fact, next year appears to look quite promising for the group. 53 - -I-m7U:w a to R FRONT ROW: Julie Rogers, Kris Knudson, Amy Davis, Laura Makinen, SECOND ROW: Joni Bren, Kris Komschlies, Kathy Scheneman, Joan Springer, Pat Prepe, Anita Peltier, Joanne Portinga, Ellen Connaughty, THIRD ROW: Candy Winslow, Dave Smith, Kevin Barta, Cindy Krolls, Debbie Wurdeman, Wayne Pruszinske, Mitch Vest, Brian Middleton, Robin Groenke, Brian Olson, LAST ROW: Mike Nelson, Tom Swirtz, Laurie Hagen, Bobbie Brace, Draig Nracdt, Steve Eisch, Casey Kottke, Dave Gilderhaus, Bill Inhofer. The Eagles led the Valley Con- ference in defense, where they shut out five of the nine opponents and led many of the teams in the conference in the WIN column as they tied for second place. At the start, the Eagles played well as they defended their 1970 Confer- ence Championship Title. They mustered a 4th quarter touchdown against Golden Valley to win 19- 13, and in the second game, breezed past Shakopee on a muddy home field 28-0. However, they were plagued by penalties and a determined Buffalo team at Buffalo Homecoming beat Eden Prairie 6-20. They beat Orono a week later, but lost to Chaska teventual championsy in a deter- mined, but losing effort. The Eagles finished out the season with- out giving up , even though title hepes were pretty well shattered, they came back defeating Waconia handily, and caught St. Anthony twice behind their goal in a game where defense showed all the points on the board. :., : t E: 3 3 - 3 ' 23' 3 g '39 47 VIE: g A 46 V. 64.6 928 '35 e?! .4: $4 i'K 4 9355 PS 4 Undefeated 9th Grade Team FIRST ROW: L to R: Guy Treanor, Murcury Johnson, Don Betts, John C arlon, Dave Frankland, Dave Mueller, Jeff Klein, SECOND ROW: Mr. Hagan, coach, ScottJohnson, Chris Tangen, Bill Inhofer, Marty Raths, Jeff Theis, Greg Yee, Spencer Conrad, Mike Blood; THIRD ROW: Larry Doig, JeffJohnston, Greg Cutshall, Mike Geimer, Dave Johnston, Dave Redpath, Jeff East, Bill Nuenfeldt, Mark Blanchard. xx 11 , 17 1 , w;x...L- 1.3 m m :L 3.? 8th Grade Team L TO R FRONT ROW: Paul Rummel, Greg Nelson, Steve Holmquist, Tom Johnson, Steve Carey, Joel Theis, Don Houghton, JackJohnson, Steve Bolduc, Ross Gavle, SECOND ROW: Bob McCullock, Bruce Smith, Peter Lamon, Dave Bell, John O'Ryan, Bret Sickman, Tom Moran, Rick Miller, Todd Sherman, Richard Reichow, Mike O'Brien, LAST ROW: Jon Westerhaus, Kelly McMahon, Joel Eickholt, Roy Johnstone, John Herzog, Russ Nelson, Mike Meyers, Herb Bloomquist, Tom Beckfeld, John Netwal, David Brandt, Coach Bill Holte. 7th Grade Team FIRST ROW L TO R: Scott Smith, John Cvetnic, Andy Sailor, Craig Henderson, Jeffjones, Jeff Bush, Scott Englar, Shawn Berke, Ron Huber, Dan Nordtsleten, Jim Semrad; SECOND ROW: Brad Johnson, John Fragale, Jon Schee, Pat Roeser, Keith Talyor, Pat Meyers, Ken Gustafson, Alan Hagan, Steve Makie, Denny Nelson, Todd Kouglin, R.E. The fast- breaking, pressing tactics of the squad served to bring them out on top in the close games--and put them so far ahead in some games that they couldn't be caught. The Eagle's two conference losses gave them a tie with Buffalo for first, and a record of 12 and 2. The typical game plan involved guards Steve Manlove and Paul Westerhaus putting on pressure in the full court-press, causing many turnovers and easy layups, Dwight Picha setting up plays With his quick passes, and taking scoring honors along with Paul Westerhaus. Meanwhile, George Adzick, John Dolejsi, and Jim BmWn worked in close for rebounds and extra points. At the time of this publication, the quickness and the teamwork of the team, functioning sh'ongly under the leadership of Coach Bill Holte and Captains Dwight Picha and Paul Westerhaus led many forecasters into strong predictions for greater honors in the district and region championships. In its flrst year at EP, the hockey team has shown improvement With every game. Even for a. new team, they did better than expected. Under the leadership of captain Eric Christianson and alternate captains Paul Menge and Phil Sailor, the team did battle with surrounding hockey teams. The senior line composed of Eric C hristianson, Brad Johnson and Tom Linge played offense while Bob Norman and junior Rob Reiner played defensively. The junior offensive line with Dan Enblom, Rick Tracy and Rick Fifield was backed up with the senior defensive line of Don Schwartz and Phil Sailor. The third line of Jon Erickson, Mike Blood, and Jeff Martin on Offense and Stan Theis and Mike Flavin on defense tapered off the team leaving goalie positions to Paul Menge and Dave Flavin. This year's team provided fast action and experience for all in the art of winning and losing. Things should be looking up for the team in future years under the supervision of Mr. Strohkirch. Dr. John Wright This year at Eden Prairie High School saw many of the same things happening from the faculty's and administrators' view point, but also many new things. As pictures on this page show, the traditional Senior-Faculty basketball game took place with the faculty iaheml winning as usual. And there is Mr. Salinger, continuing to illustrate his habit of getting wrapped up in his work. These things, or things, like them, will probably always be. But important changes also took place in the year of '71-'72. One of the changes involved a new addition to the administrative staff as Mr. Robert Fallon was hired as Assistant Superintendant of Schools. Mr. Fallon soon began several new innovations including an all-school effort to gain accreditation from the North Central Association. To do this, faculty, community people and students were involved in a number of self-study teams which attempted to define the schools' strengths and weaknesses in terms of accreditation and future improvement. Mr. Fallon also worked extensively with the Language Arts, Social, and Home EC. Departments in terms of establishing new programs of study and course offerings.
