The Eden Prairie High School Band, under the direction of Mr. Emmett Stark, recently completed one of its most suc- cessful years. The Marching Band, consisting of fifty-three members complete in new uniforms, has won many honors. On June 14 and 15, 1963, the band traveled to Bemidji to participate in the Department of Minnesota V.F.W. Convention. Here they placed second in this state contestgln October they. traveled to Mankato, where they again won high honors by placing third among fourteen schools and second in their division, in the category of field competition. The band also played for Homecoming and all home football games. Another activity of the Marching Band was that of promoting school spirit by playing at pep fests. The Varsity lor Concertl Band, the membership of which is essentially the same as Marching Band, presented a number of concerts, including the third annual Pops Con- certll, a Christmas Concert, and exchange concerts with Le Sueur and St. Anthony. The Eden Prairie Band was chosen the WCCO Prep Band of the Week and on December 10 the selected numbers they played were recorded. The Girls Recreation Association consists of girls from grades 7-12. It is a self-supporting organization which earned money this year by maintaining the concession stand and conducting a Sadie Hawkins Dance. The various activities which were sponsered included the Slumber Party, Halloween and Christmas parties, skating, bowling, a playday as well as weekly activities. It also sponsered a trophy for the best class skit presented during pep fests and the spirit jug. The officers attended a leadership camp at Camp Courage this year of which Miss McIntyre was the director. The G.R.A. had a very successful year in that the membership increased, thus making it necessary to divide it into junior and senior sections. 46 i'W'V g m sapseuumg vmzum 151 1m? 2m ,cww 5 Money-making proj ect. Balfanz, 1963 H omecomz'ng This year's homecoming activities began Thursday night, October 9, with the coronation of the new 1963 Homecoming King and Queen. The suspense mounted as Marty Husby, Mas- ter of Ceremonies, opened the envelopes containing the names of the 1963 royalty. Within a few seconds, Joe Tom- linson and Holly Bushbaum were crowned. The attendants from the senior Class were Peg Balfanz, Pat Dill, Kerry Menge, John Nechas, John Todd, and Jim Johnson. The juni- or class attendants were John Ungerman and Carol Reuss, and the attendants from the sophomore class were Dan Raustadt and Andrea Peterson. Marty Raths and Darcy McMahon were crownbearers. On Friday afternoon a pepfest was held in the gym and in the evening before the students left for the game a huge bonfire was held. Everyone then boarded the buses for Chaska. During halftime the band presented their program after which the Royalty paraded the field on a float, deco- rated by the senior class. The senior float was followed by the G.R.A. float which was quite a contrast. Although our team and the spectators had tremendous school spirit we were defeated and failed to Chastise Chaska . On Saturday night the Homecoming dance was held in the ng Joe and Queen Holly cafeteria. The room was decorated by the juniors and music was furnished by the Roger Eckers Dance Band. 48 Senior boys collecting wood for the bonfire. G.R.A. Float Our new royalty The Homecoming dance marked the end of this yearhs festivities. 49 Sno-Daze Royalty John Nechas and Peg Balfanz reigned as 1964 king and queen over the annual Sno-Daze festivities January 24 and 25. Their attendants were Sandy Clark, Kerry Menge, Pat Dill, Jim Johnson, Steve Kerber, and John Todd. Leading the exciting event was the traditional basketball game during the pep fest on Friday afternoon. This game is between the teachers and the senior boys, excluding those on the basketball team. Once more the teachers were vic- torious 26 to 17. Friday night our Eagles met the Orono Spartans in a tense conference game. Unfortunately, the Eagles were unable to pull it through and were downed 54 to 48. After the game the coronation took place and was t '3. followed by a talent show. Andy Peterson and Marty Husby were Mistress and Master of Ceremonies. Various perform- ances in the show were those of Jennifer Woolley and Kimla Bushbaum doing a dance version of Honeybun , Sue Emerson and Peggy? Husby singing solos, including Days of Wine and Rosesh by Sue and HAll I Have to do is Dream,, by Peggy, and a combo featuring Dan Raustadt. The Prairi- ettes danced, Kathy Rohe and Cathy Melberg played hFiddle- faddle , a piano duet, and Kenny Millis played his accordian. Satqrday there was ice skating in the afternoon at Wilson, 5.
