Johnson Dr. MacDougall Dr. Hatala and Dr. Foster 7 32 to: Project ' 73 from: Jim Earle re: frogs A Story For Committees (moral is included) Once upon a time there was a little frog. Now this frog was fairly happy, but one day some big frogs said, Psst, buddy, we have an offer you can ' t refuse. And of course the little frog, who was also fairly smart for being a little frog, didn ' t refuse. Anyway they put him in a room and told him that if he could hop to the opposite wall of the room, he could have all the riches of the frog-kingdom. I Dr. Crane The only rule was that out of politeness the little frog could only hop half of each remaining distance (after all the room wasn ' t very big). Well , thought the little frog slyly, this ' ll be a breeze. The first hop took him halfway to the wall, but the next hop although bringing him still closer to the wall, introduced to the little frog, who was also fairly naive, Dr. Wireman Dr. Wahking the idea of diminishing returns. So by the 31st hop the frog was very, very, close to the wall yet was really not getting any closer with the incredibly minute hops at this stage. By the 93rd hop (really it was a flinch) the little frog was so tired that he just collapsed, and sure enough he fell right into the wall! The moral of this is that just when you ' re the tiredest of not getting anywhere, sure enough you ' ll bump into a wall! j Miss Tibbs HL « i i ■L ?l 1 A HT ' N m Ms. Calhoun, Dr. Block and Mr. Smout Ms. Shirty Smith Dr. Meacham 85 THE MERMAID SHOW AT WEBB CITY The mermaids all died from old age or maybe they worked them to death (you know show business) so they stuffed them and put them into a display window surrounded by seashells and coral, with a recording of their famous song that lured sailors to the bottom. It is the biggest attraction this side of Weekeewatchee with their rival mermaids, still aliv e and luring not sailors but tourists now, much as they go for sailors but there aren ' t anymore sailors. Where did the sailors disappear to, hanging around town in their snug outfits with nothing to do but open for suggestion. All they wanted was a good time and all we wanted was for them to have it. Sailors being as rare as mermaids these days Webb City ought to have a sailor show. Of course they don ' t have seductive breasts and tails but they do have tight bulgy pants and a loose gait that says, I ' ll do anything you want, and, Hi folks, enjoy your vacation. Perhaps the mermaids died because they sang and no sailors came. I could understand that very well, it being the universal predicament that nobody comes, answering the soul ' s longing. Poor mermaids, nobody comes to the mermaid show anymore. It is all dusty and the record is scratched. What say we go and kidnap the mermaids and bring them back to the sea where they were captured long ago: Instead of luring anybody, they were lured, the sillies, and ended up in showbusiness. Brothers and sisters, let ' s liberate the mermaids of Webb City and give them a sea burial, chanting and scattering flowers on the water, for the happy ending all mermaids long for: Turning to sea foam.
