ARC ?TMENT |, ' 3E -. 33733 ' 1 1964 1965 And so they have come to this place Academics Florida Presbyterian College St. Petersburg, Florida Vol. II They watch and wonder now and then at change and sometimes think of when the place was barren; then, before the structured, glistening homes of books and thoughts, grew up to meet the welcome tread and pulse of those who wander. They find themselves in the activities surrounding them: there are times of fun and of joy mixed with the necessary times when hello ' s must be said and smiles given often too often Shadows of people doing, and some of those shadows having faces. John C. Howorlh, Dean of Mi They know that somewhere lost behind the doors which have important names are those who care in their own way- unseen, sometimes unknown. Lawrence Wmn Richord McFodycn, The Tr rfw There are others at this place, perhaps unseen, important to the pruning and the growth, who fill a need that only people can: ' 9« they work and some become our friends. All the faces sharing the task of the work of the books and those times of no books, when being alone is enough and thoughts are more close than the skin up on their bodies. 16 They work and then the moments of relief, nstants shared with someone else, a friend perhaps. A smile, a laugh, a look of surprise enjoyment expressed on a face: reflections of people being themselves. At times they need to be alone, to know the sounds of words unspoken, to feel the thoughts of tinne too close to reach expression the symbols of silence together. 20 ' - M 7 k M ' ip ' ip This place is not only a place where there are books, and papers, and men who stand in front of rooms and talk; it is a place of meeting, of confrontation, of community, and of loneliness. It is a place where they come and begin to learn and to have things happen that will be remembered. 21 24 Everell H, Err 25 26 John H Jacobson, Phihiophy Keith W. Noah, Santa Claus, Antigone, Abrahann and Isaac brought this place insights and thoughts. The first year of full-time production activity stimulated, shocked, and impressed: many times there is more real to the unreal than to the real. A4 45 The clubs of this place brought moments away from activities of schedules. They laughed at professors mocking themselves and at imitations of other people from other places . . . Shadows still playing in lights of a Fiesta and AAardi Gras. 46 47 48 49 50 t .- ' - For some, sailing provides a form to shape the moments away from activities of schedules. Sometimes it takes the shape of competition; sometimes it is freedom from the containment of the place. V M Tli N ■— 52 For many at this place, the spectators, basketball is a mixture of agony, a chance to shake fists and shout vindictives at opposing players and referees; and happiness: Bruce just made two more points. For a skillful, well-coached few, basketball means grueling practice sessions, a hard played game and, hopefully, a victory. 53 r 54 There are those possessing special skills in many sports who seek to make a test of their abilities. They demonstrate their skills on mats and hardwood floors, on orange clay infields and sand traps. They compete and sometimes win. 55 56 For some a serious undertaking, for others a comedy of errors; a conglomeration of glittering victories and ignominious defeats mixed with skill and humor. They develop new skills, exercise favorite abilities, or just have fun. For many men the exertion of intramurals is the best relaxation. 57 • • 53 For these, too, intramurals are a chance to test their athletic ability. They try the unfamiliar- dribble, punt, and pass; scream and yell, and try to win, but not really like boys. -rjil , 59 60 Ns They govern themselves, to an extent, under the Student Government Association. Here faces meet and talk. They seek to make the structure of government significant to the other faces and shadows. They conflict and talk more; they elect new faces and give money for the others to have their functions. But still they are blowers of smoke and pullers of hair. 6i 62 63 So many shadows doing so many things. Those moments present themselves, the times of release and spontaneity, and hold minds and eyes. This place can be a happy place. 64 65 Nelson Bl.sh ■!! -f!?.
