FOOTBALL The Echo High School Football Team completed its 1948 grid season with a record of three wins and five losses. Although the team finished in the red, the season was considered a success due to the unusually tough schedule the Rockets were faced with. The Rockets outscored their opposition by getting one hundred and eighty-seven points to their opponents one hundred and seventy-three. The leading scorer for the team was Captain Murl Kletscher, who tallied sixty- three points. Assistant Coach Hebrink took over the coaching duties until the middle of the season when Jack Voss arrived. Both of the new coaches gained the admiration of the fans for the fine work they had done. An adequate number of returning lettermen seems to insure a successful season for 1949. Graduating Lettermen-Murl Kletscher, Clayton Anderson, Punky Hagen, Glen Kotval, Gorden McCoy. Returning Lettermen-Bill Hansvick, Argene Froland, Ken Taylor, Willard Viergutz, Glennis Meier, Warner Hein, Harlan Boushek, .Tohn Eldred. Only four of last year's lettermen will be back at their old positions this year. They are: Clayton Anderson-short-stop, Murl Kletscher-3rd baseman, and Glennis Meier and Willard Viergutz, both pitchers. Other boys out for the sport are as follows: Outfield: Gorden McCoy, Glen Kotval, Argene Froland, Myron Hustad. Ray Mullenburg, Verlin Meier, and Ervin Zimmer. Infield: Warner Hein, Marvin Laabs, Gorden Pullen, John Eldred and Miles Gladitsch. Catchers: Billy Hansvick, Dale Hustad. Pitchers: Harlan Boushek, Harlan Olson, Merlin Christopherson. Undoubtedly other boys, along with a number of Freshmen, will be going out for the team when spring season rolls around. HONOR ATHLE TE Clayton Anderson was chosen honor athlete for the year of 1948-1949, by all boys participating in sports. This honor was given on the basis of citizenship, scholarship, sportsmanship, co-operation, and athletic ability. 36
