A plane has just arrived, being piloted by Buddy Christensen. Getting off the plane are June Kuehn, American Airline Stewardess, Marjorie Dietz and Lyla Hagen. Marjorie is running a. nursery, a job she cannot shirk when things are so changeable. Lyla is pure food and drug tester at Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis-- Eat This Not That. Arriving next is Clayton Anderson, well known authority on engineering, telling us about his world famous project on irrigating the Sahara Desert. Clayton invites us to his Vee Vee Sea Food Specialities featuring Miss Valeria Viergutz as the mermaid. Coming in next is Jeanette Stelter, sports writer for the New York Times. She tells us about her thrilling experiences managing a young heavyweight boxer, who makes his debut at Madison Square Garden soon. Another member, Gordon McCoy, our dentist, has arrived. His motto is Open Wide and Jerk. A taxi stops out in front and three people get out. First Doris Arndt, our school teacher, who walks ten miles every day to her little red school house. Well, look who is trailing behind her, Ramona Hustad, carrying a coal bucket. We grasp she is janitor The depression has hit her, so she has settled for hard manual labor. Last to get out of the taxi is Karen Von de Linde, a wealthy doctor's wife. Modeling is her hobby and she carries the slogan of Keep Slim Behind. ln walks the great athlete, Murl Kletscher, who just completed his third season as first string fullback for the Green Bay Packers professional football team. He in- forms us that next season he will have a new job--that of backfield coach for the Michigan Wolverines. Since Shirley Bode has given up her teaching career, she is now training her lit- tle Hansvicks how to use their inherited deep bass voices. Where's all the noise coming from? Oh! Who should arrive but Glenn Busack, Square Dance Caller, giving us his latest version on the Boo Sack Square Dance. Well, look who's coming in now. The world's well known Ballet Dancer, Roberta Chapman, now appearing at the Punk Hut Theater, managed by Llewellyn Hagen. Here comes Fern Renneke, chatting about her Easy to Milk Mountain Goats. She has bought a shack in the Appalachian Mountains and has a herd of fifteen. Darlene Dahl has just come back from the county fair. fYe1low Med. that isj. She won first prize on her dishtowels. Marjorie Schmidt, librarian of the Library of Congress, is publishing the 1959 Almanac, designed especially for the honorable Mrs. G. J. Reuter. Gladys Schlemmer has been seen flashing her famous smile on Billboards all over the U. S., Pepsodent Toothpaste has hired her to exhibit what their publicized product can do. Delores Leupke, proprietor of the Leup De Loop circus, now touring the country, stops long enough to tell us of her charming features. Joyce Hustad goes around the race track, as the feather weight Jockey, riding swaybacked sad-eyed Citation, While everyone's attention is attracted to the race, Shirley Gladitsch is busy watering her elephants, and selling her Happy Ditch brand of peanuts. Glen Kotval has just broken the world's speed record for motorcycles. QAlong with a nurnber of arms and legs.l Looking back on our happy school days, this reunion leaves us with happy mem- ories of our class and a bright look into the future. 14 CLASS W ILL We, the more brillant students, the graduating class of Echo High School, being of sound mind and disposing memory, do hereby make, publish, and declare this to be our last will and testament. We are leaving our most treasured school day posses- sions to our less fortunate schoolmates: To Kenneth Taylor, Gordon McCoy leaves his ability to go steady for three years. Roberta Chapman leaves to Audrey Schlemmer the power to hold that one cer- tain man. To Donna McCoy, Shirley Bode gives her conversational ability. Llewellyn Hagen wills all his girl friends to Argene Froland---Girls look out!! Roger Paschke leaves his sense of humor to Janet Remmele. Marjorie Schmidt wills her control of blushes to Marilyn Johnson. Murl Kletscher wills his romeo tactics to Willard Viergutz, with the request he make good use of them!!! Jeanette Stelter wills her ability to argue her point to Glennis Meier. Glen Bousack wills his spunk to Dorothy Truax. Buddy Christensen wills his dark hair to Ovedia Ville. Gladys Schlemmer wills her long beautiful hair to Mildred Rust. Karen Von de Linde wills her figure to Edna Meier. Joyce Hustad wills her singing ability to Miles Gladitsch. Glenn Kotval wills his height to Donald Gronholz. Lyla Hagen leaves her quiet disposition to Donna Schlemmer. Valeria Viergutz wills her natural curly hair to La Vonne Luepke. Shirley Gladitsch wills her good nature to Lila Studeman. Clayton Anderson wills his influence with the teachers to Myron Hustad. Fern Renneke wills her Wood Lake boy friends to Anola Chapman, poor girlfff Darlene Dahl wills her ability to slide by without studying to John Eldred. Marjorie Dietz wills her attractive eyes to Florance Luepke. Delores Luepke wills her lost weekends to James Barber. Ramona Hustad wills her fluent speaking ability to Billy Hansvick. To Ida Belle Christensen, June Kuehn wills her neat appearance. Doris Arndt leaves her sober expressions and bright remarks to Bernell Warner make good use of them Bernell, Doris certainly did. Last, but not least, on this momentous occasion, we feel that our dearly beloved teachers cannot be left deserted of our numerous abilities so, we have decided to leave them many things: First, our great willingness to co-operate in all important matters, second our immaculate textbooks and test papers. To the less cultured Juniors, the Seniors leave their friendly fights and their ability to win in contests. 15 T fT UNDERGRADS un iam FIRST ROW: SECOND ROW: THIRD ROW: ABSENT FROM PICTURE: CLASS OFFICERS: Lila Studeman, Idabelle Christenson, Bernell Werner Marilyn Johnson, Edna Meier, Janet Remmele Lavonne Luepke. The band of thirty-two members met every Monday and Tuesday. It made a number of appearances, including basketball games, Homecoming, The Mid- Winter Concert, The Spring Concert, and Memorial Day. The most enjoyable one- for the members was the combined Mid-Winter Concert with Belview. A new merit system was used this year and proved successful. Most members received a bronze award by achieving 1500 points. President ------------- Marjorie Dietz Vice -President ---------- Clayton Anderson Secretary-Treasurer --------- Marilyn Johnson Merit Secretary ----------- Anola Chapman Librarians ------------- Dennis Stelter Shirley Gollmer MIXED CHORUS The High School Mixed Chorus composed of forty-one members were again successful under the leadership of Mr. Smith. The appearances of the chorus included The Christmas Program, The Spring Concert, Baccalaureate, and Commencement. After two years of hard work sufficient funds were raised to purchase choir robes. Every one was well pleased with the added improvement they made. OCTETTE The Mixed Octette, a new addition to the Music Department, was composed of the people who sang in the All State Chorus at St. Paul. The All State Chorus consisted of 1200 members and was directed by Don Craig, the director of the Fred Waring Glee Club. The members were, Karen Von de Linde, Ramona Hustad, Joyce Hustad, A Shirley Bode, Glen Kotval, .Tohn Eldred, Clayton Anderson, and Billy Hansvick. The Octette made several appearances during the year. CHRISTMAS PROGRAM The Christmas Program, given December 15, 1948, was enjoyed by all who attended. The first half of the program was a tableau presented by the grade school. The Mixed Chorus sang several songs which constituted the final half of the program. Among the songs sung were the traditional Songs of Christmas, a number by Fritz Reuter, and several other. Z7 INITIATION The morning of October lst, dawned a beautiful day, but upon arriving in school, we found one class a little topsy turvey in their array. This class was none other than the Freshman Class. It was their initiation day. We found them rigged out in l. Long Johns Z. Boys with girls bathing suits, and girls with boys bathing suits. 3. Two kinds of shoes on the wrong feet. 4. They were smeared with lipstick, burned cork, egg whites and anything else the Juniors could think of that would smear real well. The evening initiation proved very exciting also, especially that hideous horror chamber, A lunch was served after the Freshmen had been fully initiat ed. HOMECOMING Homecoming festivities at Echo High proved exciting, enjoyable and any other adjective which can be properly used. Homecoming started with a bang on Thursday evening, November 3rd, with a snake dance that almost tore out your limbs, and a big bon fire. Friday, November 4th, proved a rainy day, but not rainy as far as activities were concerned. The parade held in the afternoon was very picturesque. It was led by a banner with the slogan URUFFRANKLINH spelled out on it. The very pretty floats which carried the attractive Queens followed the high school band, under the direction of Ned Hermann. The Queen was Roberta Chapman, her attendants were Shirley Gladitsch, Marjorie Smith, Mildred Rust, Marjorie Lecy, and Ioan Gronholz. In the evening our homecoming game with Franklin was played at which time our new football lights were dedicated. Lady Luck was not with us, however, and we lost our game by the close score of 14-18. A dance was held at the school house after the game to which all alumni were invited. MASQUERADE PARTY Everyone went into their attic during that second week of February and brought out old costumes which were fixed up in a very unique way for the Masquerade party on February llth. There were costumes of every kind and make at the party from clowns and bums, to very sophisticated queen and such. The party consisted of a movie, popular dancing and the thing which made the party a very great success, Square Dancing. A lunch was served toward the end of the evening. za, CARNIVAL The carnivaliwas a wonderful success again this year, we had a big crowd and a crowd that was out to make our carnival a successful affair. We had all the usual booths, and some new ones like the side shows, and a rummage sale better than it has ever been before. It was a great event for the Seniors because for all four years during our high school career we have won the carnival Queen race through the sale of presale tickets. The Queen for this year was Darlene Dahl, the King was Llewellyn Hagen. Their attendants were Donna Schlemmer, Argene Froland, Joan Johnson, Ray Mulenberg, Delphane Markgraf, and Rolf Mowhinkel. JUNIOR CLASS PLAY The Junior Class put on a very side -splitting class play this year on December lst, at the schoolhouse. The play Our Gal Sa1, summed up in a few words was the story of a country girl who came to the city to stay with an aunt, who was a neighbor to a very rich family. When she was a little girl and acted very much like A Country Hick, she met the son of this rich family and was sure from then on she wanted to marry him. The play becomes very funny when she tries to make this young man notice her, and in so doing introduces some very Slapstick friends. The cast was as follows: Sally Skinner, Our Gal Sal ----------- Mildred Rust Mrs. Cecilia Vandyne, a society matron - - - - - Marilyn Johnson Allison Vandyne, her young daughter ---- - - Bernell Werner Glenn Vandyne, Cecilia's young handsome son - - - - James Barber Nella Yardley, Sal's gossiping aunt -------- Nonie Chapman Dagmar Waring, of the elite ------- - - Donna McCoy Dexter Westbrooke, a wealthy financier ------- r John Eldred Ronald Spangler, who is on the Cops ------- Bill Hansvick Daisy Judkins, who hails from Soap Lake - - - - 'Dorothy Truax HONOR STUDENTS Hats off to Marjorie Dietz, the Valedictorian, and Jeanette Stelter, Salutatorian, of 'our class. Their grades were grades which couldn't be beat. Both these girls proved very capable of handling their studies with the Greatest of Ease all through their high school career. Marjorie had a straight A average, and Nettie very close behind with about and A- average. Shirley Bode, Doris Arndt, Clayton Anderson, and Joyce Hustad followed these two honor students holding the ranks of 3-6 respectively. 29 JUNIOR, AND SENIOR PROM AND BANQUET As of now when this annual is being written, not all the plans for the prom have been completed, but from what we hear, the Juniors are going to give the Seniors a superb prom and banquet. The date for the big affair has been set for May .?.0th. The Orchestra for this year's prom will be Jimmy Thomas and his band. SENIOR TRIP The Seniors trip this year was as much of the cities that we could see in three days. The three days were May 6, 7, and 8. The trip proved to be a galvanting good time, maybe this was because of the sight seeing tours, and other pastimes which we had. The tour consisted of a visit to the Star and Tribune building, Sister Kenny Institute, Grain Exchange, Artifical Limb Company, and Art gallery, Ford Assembly plant and a Meat Packing plant. Evening entertainment consisted of the Ice Follies, Stairway to Stardom and many other things we chose to see by ourselves. This is certainly a trip which will always be remembered by all Seniors. SPORTSWRITERS During the past year, the score books have been handled by two very capable and attractive scorekeepers. They are Jeanette Stelter and Bernell Werner. Jeanette, who has been at the job for three years, has done her job well handling A team scorekeeping and write-ups. Bernell, who has worked with B team scorekeeping, has done very well and will be very much at ease handling A team affairs next year. The percentage statistics were kept to the Nth degree by Doris Arndt. All three girls certainly should be complimented on their work. OUR JANITOR One person we will never forget when we leave high school is John Stensrud,' our janitor. John is the man responsible for keeping the school as warm and as home- like as he did., He has been her for two years and has done a wonderful job, those two years. Although the team finished in the red, the season was considered a success due to the unusually tough schedule the Rockets were faced with. The Rockets outscored their opposition by getting one hundred and eighty-seven points to their opponents one hundred and seventy-three. The leading scorer for the team was Captain Murl Kletscher, who tallied sixty- three points. Assistant Coach Hebrink took over the coaching duties until the middle of the season when Jack Voss arrived. Both of the new coaches gained the admiration of the fans for the fine work they had done. An adequate number of returning lettermen seems to insure a successful season for 1949. Graduating Lettermen-Murl Kletscher, Clayton Anderson, Punky Hagen, Glen Kotval, Gorden McCoy. Returning Lettermen-Bill Hansvick, Argene Froland, Ken Taylor, Willard Viergutz, Glennis Meier, Warner Hein, Harlan Boushek, .Tohn Eldred. Only four of last year's lettermen will be back at their old positions this year. They are: Clayton Anderson-short-stop, Murl Kletscher-3rd baseman, and Glennis Meier and Willard Viergutz, both pitchers. Other boys out for the sport are as follows: Outfield: Gorden McCoy, Glen Kotval, Argene Froland, Myron Hustad. Ray Mullenburg, Verlin Meier, and Ervin Zimmer. Infield: Warner Hein, Marvin Laabs, Gorden Pullen, John Eldred and Miles Gladitsch. Catchers: Billy Hansvick, Dale Hustad. Pitchers: Harlan Boushek, Harlan Olson, Merlin Christopherson. Undoubtedly other boys, along with a number of Freshmen, will be going out for the team when spring season rolls around. HONOR ATHLE TE Clayton Anderson was chosen honor athlete for the year of 1948-1949, by all boys participating in sports. This honor was given on the basis of citizenship, scholarship, sportsmanship, co-operation, and athletic ability. 36 BASKE TBALL This year the Echo High School basketball season was unique in the respect that the Rockets for the first time in history had a Distr-ict 10 Crown to defend. Although there were only three members back from last year's Cinderella Champions, intense interest in the sport provided Coach Voss with enough capable players to form another first rate team. Playing an extensive schedule, the Rockets acquitted themselves very well by winning a vast majority of their games. Somewhat in-experienced, they suffered an early defeat at the hands of the Redwood Falls Cardinals. However, they got right back on the winning road, and stayed there, until a Christmas vacation defeat by Hull, Iowa. Later in the season the Rockets fell before the Morgan i Raiders and split games with Morton, Franklin, and Woodlake. Excellent coaching by Jack Voss, plus the desire to win for Geek gave the team the impetus it needed to make the season a success. The wonderful spirit exhibited by the boys made the student body and community proud of them, regard less whether they won or lost. Capable cheerleaders and good student backing at all the games gave the team rousing support. Prospects for next season are very bright, with eight of the first ten coming back for a repeat performance. The B team will have good boys graduating from its ranks, so another topnotch team seems eminent. Graduating Lettermen: Clayton Anderson, Murl Kletscher.
