Many memories have been passed on from generation to generation. In the fall of 1978 a school bond was successfully passed making 1.1 million dollars available to the Echo School District. The AJS Lynch Architect firm drew the blue-prints for the future construction. Construction will start in the summer of 1979. Completion is tentatively set for the fall of 1980. Their rolls often go unrecognized and unrewarded. These people are our cooks, custodians, and bus drivers. They include the people pictured on this page and Jessie McAtee, Carol Ramos, and Sandra Sisler. The Cougar volleyball girls started the season off slow, but constantly improved. The Varsity Team concluded with a record of two victories. The girls were coached by Mr. Weimer and Miss Nishihara. Both coaches were new to the sport, but worked hard to teach the skills of the game, as well as good sportsmanship and team work. Jan Ramos, sophomore, received special honors at the end of the season by being chosen for the District All-Stars. Jan was chosen for outstanding court play. A total of 20 girls participated in the entire season, forming three teams. During practice, the teams constantly competed against each other to sharpen their skills and competitive play. Coaches Weimer and Nishihara team up on the sidelines. 33 Jan Ramos receives District All-Star award. FOOTBALL This year's football season was one of many trials and tribulations. It was also a season of frustrations and joy. It was a season of ' 'the thrill of victory'' and ' 'the agony of defeat.'' The football team this year was one well worth watching. We started out playing with a very abbreviated schedule, which meant having a three-week period with no ball games. We were also very short in numbers, which in the long run made a definite outcome in some ball games. But, these players played with a lot of pride, enthusiasm, reckless abandon, and just plain guts, which is really what it takes to play the game. My hat is off to these players, for the fine season they had. -Written by Coach Noble. Todd Rohde, back, handles the ball. Back Row, 1 to r, Asst. During pre-season play, they chalked up a 4-1 record while concentrating on team work. In league play, they gained 8 wins and gave up 4 losses, placing 2nd behind Arlington. At District, Echo squeaked by Wheeler 39-37, but fell to Arlington 34-50, thus missing a State Tournament trip. The Cougars were led in scoring and rebounding by Tina Graham and Stacey Snow. First year coach, Debbie Hawkins, felt the girls worked hard and wall be a team to watch out for next year. Cougar girls receive flowers before their last home game. Larry Holeman, the starting center led the Cougars through the season as the high scorer; he made the first team for the Big Sky Conference. Starters Todd Rohde, and Joe Ramos made second team. Jerry Ruth, Brett Rohde, and Jeff Correa were also starting players. The Cougars under the direction of Coach Louie Stocker and assistant Coach Gary Hartman, competed in playoffs against lone for fourth place in district. Overall the team had a good season, but not quite good enough to win a playoff berth. Todd Rohde reaches for the basket. David Iverson guards offensive player. Jerry Ruth shoots a free throw. But as the season went on, the number of people that went out kind of dwindled down, due to the lack of interest and jobs. Only three people participated in the sport all through the season. They were Tina Graham, Dean Gehrke and David Iverson. Tina did an outstanding job in all her events, as did Dean and David. Due to the short number on the team, they really could not go for the team trophies at the meets. At the District meet, Tina won her preliminary heats in the 100 yd. dash and 200 yd. dash. The team had an excellent season. All team members qualified for district and three members were seated. Members eated were Brett Rohde, Todd Rohde, and Chris Ramos. The results were, they placed third at district. Coach Weimer summed up the season, as To be one of the most best, by that 1 mean the player's really showed a lot of effort.11 ' 'The students really showed what they could do as far as playing tennis.'' 43 Brett Rohde lunges for the ball. We the Cougar staff would like to thank the community for their support extended to our school throughout the year. Without your continuous assistance, the Echo schools would not be experiencing the progress and growth that began in the fall of 1978. This year has been a challenge, starting anew, fighting the seemingly impossible, and succeeding. We did it! The Cougar has begun again. I want to extend my sincere thanks to every member of the annual staff, and to our dedicated advisors, Miss Cox and Miss Nishihara. We were all in this together, sharing the joys, frustrations and triumphing over our greatest enemy, time. What, to us, was once a dream is now a reality-the memories are yours to keep. B eh£ le.
