Awards The awards assembly this year acknowledged the many fine achievements of Echo High Students. The top athlete from each sport received an award from the coaches. Mark Madison received the following awards: The Wiseman Award, Most Valuable Football Player, and Most Valuable Senior Basketball Player. Jeff Spike was named the Boys' Most Valuable Track Star, and Jackie Hale, the Girls' Most Valuable Track Star. Three tennis awards were given. Becky Collier was Most Valuable Singles Player and Karen Meyers and Roxanne Koffler Most Valuable Doubles Players. Pam McAtee was given the Most Valuable Volleyball Player Award for her 65 point season. The Most Valuable Basketball Player for the girls was Christy Rudolph. Two Junior High boys were named Most Valuable Players: Rick Hale and Rich Snow. Other athletes to receive recognition were the state track meet placers: Jeff Spike in the 220, Carol Berry in the 440 and Jackie Hale in the 100, all placing 6th. Receiving the year's Drama awards were Karen Meyers and Mark Madison. The paper staff had two hard-workers who received recognition, Brad Williams and Susan Stockard. The annual Editor, Diane Berry, received recognition, also. Superintendent, Thomas Chapman announced five students as members of the Society of Outstanding Teenagers of America. They were: Mark Madison, Diane Berry, Brad Williams, Wayne Ottum, and Sherman Reese. Cindy Haines was thrilled to learn she was awarded the B. M. C. C. Scholarship. Diane Berry and David Dick were notified of receiving the P. T. A. Scholarship. 14

1973 ns Other awards were bestowed on E. H. S. Students earlier in the year. Becky Collier won an award from the Hermiston Chapter of the American Legion for her speech on the constitution and represented this district at the State contest in Milwaukee. Becky Collier and Norma Campbell were chosen by the Rotary Club as their sponsorees for the Rotary overseas study program, and will spend a year in Sweden and the Philippines. The awards for the Science Fair were given earlier to Patty Watson, 1st, Eddie Fisher, and Brad Collier in the Biology Class and Jo Lynn Lilly, 1st, Scott Madison, and Nola Johnson in the General Science Class. Several scholarships were awarded to E. H. S. Seniors during the year. Mark Madison and Trudy Bowman received the Elks Youth Leadership Scholarship, Diane Berry the Oregon N. A. P. U. S. (Post-masters) Scholarship, V. F. W. Scholarship and the Von Der Ahe School Trust Scholarship. The V. F. W. awarded three sophomores their medals for the Voice of Democracy Speech Contest: John Cohn, 1st, Jonnie Haines, and Tyra Hayden. Mark Madison and Diane Berry were notified of two certificates they had been awarded from the Dad's Club of Oregon State University and the State Scholarship Committee, as Oregon Scholars. Mrs. Smoot gave the members of the band several awards. Scott Madison and Debbie Lilly will be coholders of the Most Improved Player Trophy and Roxann Koffler of the Most Inspirational Player Trophy as well as many other awards for her efforts in band. Mrs. Smoot also announced that Roxie and Scott deserved recognition for going to Music in May. Roxie Koffler was awarded a special performer award for her work with the Kitten Kadets. Diane Berry received the G. A. A. charm bracelet for being the years spirit girl. 15
