But of these, the people are the most important because they are responsible for the past, they are the present, and they will shape the future. The people are as diversified as the land itself. So it is with Furr High School, Houston, Texas, USA. The citizens of our school are a oonglomeration - a melting pot - of varied generations with a full spectrum of ideologies, dreams, ambitions. The importance of world commitments subside, and the problems here in our own land gain priority. qi 'll A land, once majestic and beautiful, is gradually being spoiled and smothered by man's continual carelessness and greed. And the result? The way man has endangered other species may eventually extend to himself. I2 is X kV arp 49 I3 But is there a solution? Perhaps. Perhaps, if Americans could form a bond in the tradition of united we stand, divided we fall. Perhaps that esprit de corps that rallies the American people in times of crisis or need could be solidified long enough to solve some of our problems. Or perhaps there is a need for a realization, for a renaissance. Maybe, just maybe, Americans need to realize what is put into life is what they will get out of it. I 5 R f I. The members sold refreshments at the Bounty Hunter's Dance. The HR Committee sponsored, for the first time, a Spirit Day Dance which was held to help boost the student's spirit. A Welcome Home Reception for students who had just returned from a week in Wash- ington D.C. was given by HR. We are reflections of the establishment, the rebellion, and the conglomeration. We're all in this together - whether it is FHS, Houston, Texas, or the USA - whatever happens is up to us. 311 At a time when so much emphasis is placed on individual rights, it is important to remember the basis of America's success - everyone working together for the betterment of all people. This attitude has too often been cast aside and replaced by more selfish ones. ln preparing the 1972 ARENA, it was hoped that pride in America could be re-established. This is not pride in one group of Americans, but pride in all Americans. lt is the kind of pride that Americans had in the beginning of our country almost 200 years ago. Somehow, somewhere along the way, this pride has been exploited, Many of the national problems highlighted in the '72 ARENA were not intended to degrade the Nation but to draw attention to the problems. After all, we the people of FHS are the ones who will have to help deal with these problems. ln four years, 1976, the Nation will celebrate its 200th birthday. During that year, many Americans will take pride in their country, but for some that pride will fade as quickly as it comes. Some may consider this book to be idealistic or flag-waving, but if the spirit of any American is re-awakened as a result, this book has served its purpose. Thanks go to the ARENA Staff Cespecially those who contributed more than was requiredj, the photographers, and eYeryone who helped make this yearbook a reality. My sincere thanks go to Miss G. for without her help and determination the '72 ARENA would not have been possible. wlwaa Howard Cordell Editor-in-Chief '72 ARENA Autographs 1 i Ifffl N4 'K I N .ir f X .
