The Junior Varsity Basketball Team opened the season with victories over Lower Rich- land by scores of 136-311 and Q47-303. 'I'he team lost the next two games to Flora 126-291 and Orangeburg-Wilkinson Q38-44j. Errors, inconsistency and poor shooting were a plague to the team throughout the season. Although the team was defeated five times away from home, they rebounded and de- feated every opponent who entered the Rockpit , ending up 'with a perfect 9-0 record at home. The junior Varsity however, made a com- plete tumabout halfway through the season and won their last 7 games. Coach Glymph attributed this to determination, hard work, and playing as a unit. Willie Belton, Tony Lewis, Anthony Med- lock, and Willie Thompson were the top scorers in the 18 games. Tony Lewis led the team in assists and was the most consistent player. Willie Belton had a great year as he led the team in scoring, free throw percentage, field goal percentage and tied Anthony Medlock for the lead in re- bounding. Medlock was rmmner-up to Willie in scoring, while Sammy Taylor was runner- up in assists and Tony Lewis was runner-up in field goal percentage. The last game of the year was against Dreher, and again the Shamrocks prevailed. The final score was 63-49 in our favor. This game ended the season on a bitter note as the j.V's did not participate in the remaining games of the I.V. Tournament because of a dis- crepancy against one of our players, there- fore, the decision was to drop out and let the discrepancy be settled by the instigators. Last of all, the j.V. season of 14-5 was not a product of the five players mentioned earlier, but a product of dedication, and hard work by guys like john Jennings, Wayne Kirby, Kevin Emery, Tony Stroman, Ronald Davis, Larry Seals, Eugene Corbitt, Tony Tucker, Thomas Holley and Michael Pressley. These are the other members who with pride came within one win of tieing a school record. VIILUIFDI 01111001 0, KJIIILIII LUDUUID lJllll1,lrblUlll1U I. I ll,.lCUll9l.Il .IJLUIAI XJUDIIUI 1.1 Spartanburg-Character, confidence and a couple of expert sharpshooters have put Eau Claire within one step of its first state basketball championship ever. The Shamrocks needed ev- erything they could muster Saturday night fMarch 3,l973J at the Spartanburg High School gym, but they came away with a 66-64 victory over Columbia and the upper state AAAA cham- pionship. A shot with :01 showing on the clock achieved the win and now propels the Shamrocks into the state finals Satur- day fMarch 101 against Middleton at the Carolina Coliseum. Nate Davis, EC's leading scorer and rebounder during the regualr season, made the final basket of the game but it was only his third of the night. That's where character aided the Shamrocks. Nate didn't play but half the game because of foul trouble, Coach Les Evans said, but the guys who were in there never thought about giving up. They showed such great character to play like they did without Nate. Something like that could have easily gotten them down and anybody would have understood. But, they had confidence in the other players on the team and they stayed with it. Davis picked up his third foul in the lirst quarter and went to the bench with three seconds remaining in the period. The Shamrocks star was nothing more than a spectator the entire second quarter. He re-entered the contest after 30 seconds had elapsed in the third quarter but had to exit again after being tagged with his fourth foul at 2:57 of the same period. That's when the sharp- shooters started firing. Willie Crumpton and Steve Ashe, Eau Claire's smallish start- ing guards, started a streak at the 4:48 mark of the third period that left spectators with mouths open. It was baskets by Ashe, Cmmpton, Ashe, Crumpton, Ashe and Crumpton again that kept the Shamrocks even. All were jump shots and all were swishers from the outside. You don't shoot like that by just suiting up and going in the gym. Evans said. 'Those guys have put in endless hours of work. They were fantastic in this toumamentf' Claude Bookhart broke the Crumpton-Ashe extravaganza by scoring two Held goals to give EC a 50-48 lead after three quar- ters. But then Crumpton continued his amazing streak by get- ting three straight buckets to start the final period on two more jumpers and a fast break lay-up. We were concemed about the rebounding situation when Nate got in foul trouble, , Evans added. We knew we had more than one shooter, but whether we could hold our own in the rebounding was the big question. Bookhart went in there and did a heck of a job on the boards. He took up the slack well while Nate was out. Ben Taylor kept up in there in the lirst half and then Crumpton and Ashe started filling it up. It might sound like an old line but Columbia can be proud of the way they played basketball this season. It was a real good game for all the pressure that was involved. They got the ball inside and we got it to the open man. It just so happened we got the last shot. The Shamrocks appeared doomed with 17 seconds left in the game after a tumover gave Columbia the ball with the score tied 64-64. The Capitals, however, lost the ball out of bounds with 10 seconds remaining and Evans motioned for a time out to set up the final shot. We planned for Crumtpon or Taylor to take the last shot, Evans explained. If they were to get picked up then we'd go to Nate. It was the kind of finish I expected. Davis's only six points of the game were also Eau Claire's last six. His lirst basket came with 3:30 left in the game, his second at 1:49 and his last at :0l.
