They planned many events for the student body. The first of many of these events was Homecoming Week. The Sen- ate also hosted the Red Cross Blood Drive. They presented a movie for the student body to watch. The Senate also created a Senior Week and dress-up days. The Senate did a fine job. We applaud them for their efforts. The offense featured the split-back veer run- ning attack augmented by play-ac- tion passing. On defense, we uti- lized an eight-man front which in- cluded four linebackers. Ten mem- bers of the seventeen-man squad saw varsity action for the first time. Junior first-year lettermen includ- ed David Elkins, John Douglas, Dennis Bishop, Maurice Woods, Phil Puskala, and Bill Kublick. Dan Turbyfill, Doug Enders, Darren Priebe, and Bill Helton were the sophomores on the team. Senior leadership was provided by Ron Hess, David Smith, Dennis Davis, Jamie Davis, Raymus Haynes, Mark Garland, and Mark Hart. Unfortunately, our pre-season expectations failed to materialize. Individuals who held seventeen starting positions elected either to quit or become academically ineli- gible. The adversity and lack of continuity created through these squad reductions was more diffi- cult with which to cope than the ranks of the opposing teams. The members of the team who complet- ed the season are to be commended for both their courage and their commitment. The season did exhibit its share of bright moments. Jamie Davis was selected to the First Team Red Arrow Conference squad and co- captain Hart and Garland, as well as Turbyfill, were Honorable-Men- tion selections. Our first four con- tests, Marcellus, Bangor, New Buf- falo and Lake Michigan Catholic were not decided until the final buzzer with the opener being ex- tended into overtime. As previous- ly alluded to, however, the charac- ter construction brought about through the course of events en- countered during the season, was the most beneficial feature of the 1985 campaign. We started the season with 14-ninth graders, 10- tenth graders and 2-eleventh graders, only five of whom had played Junior Varsity Football before. The year started on a high note, with the defeat of Marcellus and ended with a loss at Hopkins. The team improved as the season progressed and lost a number of close contests. This is definitely a group to watch in the next few years as they play football at Eau Claire. 70 Coach Halgren Row 1, L to R: Lydia Thomas, Ann Garski, Lisa Bishop, Shari Watts, Sheronda Taylor, Tasha Wright. We had height inside and strong outside shooting ability. This year's leading scorers were Jill Rakauski, with 110 pts.; Sandy Hudson, with 69 pts.; and Kim Fryer (who was only with the team half the season), 56 pts. Our leading rebounders were Jill Ra- kauski, Pam Otte, and Sandy Hud- son. We started the season out very strong with a 57-2 victory over Co- vert. Then we played inconsistant- ly from one game to another. By the end of the season we pulled togeth- er and formed a team. This season was a new exper- ience for me. I had a lot of fun, and I'd like to thank the team for their enthusiasm and positive attitude toward learning. 71 Coach Skidmore Qiris’ Varsity flasket ball Row 1, L to R: Jessica Dilts, Shelly Krau- chunas, Edie Schilling. A tri- bute to your big hearts, never-say-die attitude, and more guts and determination than any foursome that I have coached. There is a big hole in my heart for you as will there be a big hole on next season's team. You showed class all the way. Thanx. Next year? Come and see Suzette, Jessica and Sandy. This year's Eau Claire Beavers turned it around from a a year ago and provided us with many exciting wins in posting a 15-7 record. The Beavers started with a bang by defeating LaLamiere (87-63), won fourteen of their next seventeen games, and closed out the year by losing a heartbreaker in the District Cham- pionship to Brandywine (61-60). Perhaps as we reflect back on the '85-'86 season, the feelings which we experienced during the close victories and defeats can be compared to popular songs on the Hit Parade. “Cherish the Moments in recalling the 74-73 win over Covert or the 47-46 victory over Bangor. Or, how about the stunning victories which came against Buchanan (82-55) or River Valley (67-55). The Phil Collins song, No One's to Blame , may apply in recalling our disappointing losses to Coloma (70-67), New Buffalo (44-43), Bridgeman (57-55), and Brandywine (61-60). These games were definitely hits with the spectators and players. Our Eau Claire Beavers had an exciting season and finished second in the Red Arrow Conference with an 11-3 record. The Beavers were in the championship race right to the end of the season with their barn burners against New Buffalo and Bridgeman. All-Conference selections were seniors Dwight Miller and Raymus Haynes. Super-Sophomore Ke- vin Boyd made the Honorble Mention team. Seniors Dwight Miller, Raymus Haynes, Ramone Norman, and Darryl Lowe contributed greatly to this team's success. Underclassmen Darryl McGhee, Rodney Alexander, Maurice Woods, Willie Gray, Roger Allen, Jim Florian, Walter Whitfield, and Kevin Boyd were also instrumental in the team's success. Four seniors, one junior and three sophomores. (There were improve- ments in all areas). Captains were Billie Jo Stillwell and Sandra Grandberry, who were also the leading setters. These two received Red Arrow All-Conference. Honor- able Mention, returning to next years squad are Beth Edelberg, Kim Fryer, Sandra Grandberry and Shannon Smith. Every person on the team made her own personal contribution, many close matches were lost, but in losing, each team member has won in reality. The individuals on the team are what made this team win with their strength and deter- mination. 78 Wrestling “Red Arrow Conference Cham- pions! This was the goal that the 1985-86 Beavers set for themselves on the first day of practice. With a lot of hard work and determination the wrestlers accomplished this goal. Every Beaver wrestler entered in the Conference tournament placed. Pierre Lilly (4th), William Scott (1st), John Wright (3rd), Todd Hess (1st), Ernie Watson (1st), Ja- mie Davis (1st), Ron Hess (3rd), Mark Hart (1st), Todd Spoonholtz (3rd), Ponenail Wright (1st), Bill Trail (3rd). The duel meet season was also very successful with the squad fin- ishing with a 12-7-1 record. This was possible because we were able to fill all of the weight classes most of the time. A number of team re- cords were broken as well: Take- downs (413), Escapes (155), Near Falls (345), Pins (149), and Team Points (1626). In the season ending State tour- nament the Beavers continued to distinguish themselves as Mark Hart, Jamie Davis, Todd Hess, and Ernie Watson qualifying for the state finals. The team finished 17th out of 77 teams with both Todd (6th) and Ernie (2nd) placing. Well done wrestlers! Row 1, L to R: Scott Langer, William Scott, John Wright. Pierre Lilly. From a won-lost perspective, the Beavers did not have a very successful year. The team finished with a 4-18 record and a last place finish in the Red Arrow Conference with a 4-10 record. However, when one considers the make up of this year's varsity team (4 Seniors, 5 Juniors, 3 Sophomores, 2 Freshmen) it is encouraging to note that the heart of the team will return next year. Jay Vladic was chosen on the Red Arrow All Conference team. Jim Florian and Fred Williams were selected Honorable Mention for 1986. The young, inexperienced Beavers made many mental and physical errors throughout the season which took them out of many games. The experience that the underclassmen gained this year will help them be an improved team in years ahead. Seniors who contributed this year were Dennis Davis, Randy Dohm, Mark Peppel, And Todd Spoonholtz. Juniors Jim Florian, Rodney Alex- ander, Willie Gray, Robert Johnson, and Jay Vladic were instrumental in the Beavers victories. Sophomores Darren Priebe, Fred Williams, and Doug Enders figure to be key players next season as they were counted on heavily this year. Freshmen Greg Dohm and Jeff Priebe learned that Varsity baseball is tough and will be instrumental to the team the next few years. Jay Vladic led the team in hits and batting average. Hitting homeruns for the Beavers were Fred Williams, Jay Vladic, and Jeff Priebe. Jim Florian led the team in walks with 12. Fred Williams, Jay Vladic, and Willie Gray led the team in stolen bases. Leading hitters for the Beavers were Fred Williams, Darren Priebe, Jay Vladic, Jim Florian, Jeff Priebe, and Rodney Alexander. Zemis The 1986 Tennis Team completed a very successful season for the first time in two years, by winning four matches and scoring points in the Tennis Regional held at Niles, Brandywine High School. Many opposing coaches said the Beaver Tennis Team was more competitive than it has been in years. With a team mostly comprised of juniors, 1987 could be the Year of the Beavers in tennis competition. The team was comprised of ten full-time players and one part-time player. Players were: 1st singles, junior Ernie Watson; 2nd singles, senior Mark Hart; 3rd sin- gles, junior. Bill Kublick, (Co-Most Improved Player); 4th singles, junior, Tracie Stilwell; 1st doubles, juniors Jerry Timmreck and Art Keene; 2nd doubles, juniors, Paul Kirby and Wendi Leitz; 3rd doubles, juniors, Cherie Eyerly and Craig James (also Co-Most Im- proved Players for 1986); and part-time player senior Michelle Pullins. 85 Coach Sawatzki L. To R.: Ernie Watson, Todd Spoonholtz, Matt Ronk, Bruce Ronk, Jeff Robertson, Coach Flagel. m The 1985 Golf Team began the season by beating River Valley 213- 219. The Beaver's good fortune on the links did not continue, howev- er. The team lost every match from that opening date until the last match of the season, when they de- feated Coloma 186-193. Illness and inconsistent play contributed to the team's poor record. Seniors, Todd Spoonholtz and Jeff Robertson; Juniors, Ernie Wat- son and Bruce Ronk and Sopho- more Matt Ronk were the heart of the team for 1985. Matt had the lowest per match average for the year. The Junior Varsity squad of Traci Abbott, Rob Schilke, Jim Watson, Joe Bowers, and Glenn Clark saw some action in 1985. Although the Varsity record of 21-15 was a dismal one, the team had an enjoyable season in which a strong finish was evidenced at Re- gional when placing 14th out of 17 teams. 86 Equestrian Zeam farewell Zo Our Seniors 19S6 ■I Chris Dohm Chris has been an asset to our team over her four years with a record of 21 firsts, 14 secoonds, 7 thirds, 6 fourths, 5 fifths and 4 sixths totalling 256 points. Needless to say she has been High Point Rider all four years. Pat Churchill Pat has also been on top his four years with 6 firsts, 14 seconds, 10 thirds, 3 fourths, 2 fifths and 4 sixths. He has been the second highest rider in his four years. We'll miss them both. Good luck Chris and Pat. Our 4 man team (oops! 2 man and 2 woman) ended up fifth place over thirteen schools. They had a great season despite Greg breaking his jaw four days before the first meet. We'll miss our seniors, but are working toward a good ride in 1986. Thanks to all of you for a good year. Coach Chris Dietz, Shelly Benson, Laura Elston, Sandy Grandberry, Jill Rakauski, Suzette Johnson, Debbie Schlipp, Coach Jamie Sinkiewics. The 1986 softball season was very successful. The team finished with a record of 15-5 overall and 12-2 in the conference, which gave them a Red Arrow Confer- ence Championship. They were led by the pitching of Heidi Emhoff. She gave up only 58 walks and struck out 102 batters. Her ERA was 3.07. The batting leaders were: Suzette Johnson, .431; Chris Dohm, .388; Sandy Grandberry, .373; Shelly Benson, .333; and Kathy Kremers, .322. The success of the team produced five All Confer- ence players: Seniors, Heidi Emhoff and Chris Dohm; Junior, Sandy Grandberry; Sophomores, Shannon Smith and Suzette Johnson. What in the world would three big name schools want from a quiet, Chris- tian university in Berrien Springs, Michigan? Well, for one thing, its students. In fact, there was a recent senior here at Andrews majoring in physics who did such an outstanding job that, aside from Andrews, other schools have been taking notice. Others like Yale, Harvard and M.I.T. They all wanted him to pursue his graduate studies at their schools. And a recent Andrews chemistry graduate received a major fellowship grant right out of college to begin work on a Ph.D. degree at Cal Tech. In addition, Andrews students regu- larly get accepted into major law schools like Georgetown University, Boston University and the University of Texas. And you’ve probably already heard about Andrews’ impressive record of prepar- ing students for medical school. The success rate among med school appli- cants from Andrews stands at 72 per- cent. The national average is 48 percent. We’re proud that our students are sought by other major universities around the country. Proud-but not surprised. After all, Andrews University has long been providing students in all majors with some of the finest programs any Christian university has to offer. That’s because we value academic achieve- ment. And we encourage it through our honors program. It’s called the Society of Andrews Scholars, and recognizes and encourages the highest scholastic standards among our students. More than 400 students from a wide range of disciplines are members of this se- lect society. Now we can’t promise that a host of other major universities will come knocking at your door when you gradu- ate from Andrews. But we can guarantee a few other things. Like a solid degree, backed by an outstanding education. A scholarly Christian community where your journeys toward faith and learning are both made on the same road. And the certainty that Berrien Springs, Michigan, isn’t the only place where our great reputation is known. Find out more about Andrews by cal- ling one of our admission counselors toll- free.
