In the second semester our team faced Coloma for the second time, and again we were defeated by a close scoring contest which hinged on answering the last question, and the Coloma buzzer went off first! The 1984 Yearbook Staff hopes that you enjoy looking through these pages of past events. We have spent many hours pre- paring the yearbook and we hope that we have captured some of the special moments of the school year. 68 Sports Varsity football The 1983 football season started with approximately twenty-two hopefuls and a new coaching staff. Hard work and enthusiasm pre- vailed through out the pre-season work outs. After a good showing in the pre-season scrimmage, we de- feated our first two opponents. We lost our next two games by a total of four points. We entered our fifth game with a 2-2 record and high hopes. After a close first half and injuries to a couple of our key play- ers, we struggled to a dissappoint- ing loss. The remainder of the season we were faced with a re-organization situation and lost the remainder of our games and finished 2-7. We were not successful in the won-lost category, but we were winners in the other categories. We continued to work hard the re- mainder of the year. We did not lose our team unity, we continued to play and practice as a team. We did not lose respect for ourselves, our team or each other. We were blessed with a group of young men that possessed a great deal of integrity, honesty and class. 1 am sure they will continue to be winners in life. Juniors Jason Bowers and Jeff Brown were the only returning golfers from the previous year. Sophomores Jeff Robertson and Todd Spoonholtz, along with freshmen James Miller and Bill Kublick began playing golf for the first time this season. Jason Bowers consistently shot in our number one position, as he led the team with lowest scores throughout the season. Jason's score of 46 against Benton Harbor and Coloma was the lowest score by our players. Jeff Brown did pro- vide good competition for Jason and challenged him toward the end of the season for the number one spot. Todd Spoonholtz and James Miller had lowest sophomore and freshman averages, respectively. As a team, our record was 0-12 with an average score of 226 per round. Even though we had a dis- mal season from that standpoint, the Eau Claire Golf team had fun learning the game of golf through practice and competition. The highlight of the season oc- curred at the Regional Tournament in Kalamazoo when our Beavers scored better than Union City to avoid finishing in last place. Coach Flagel, Jeff Brown, Todd Spoonholtz, Jeff Robertson, James Miller, Jason Bowers, Bill Kublick -'rrt“ Coach Flagel 73 Just putting around. Qirl’s Varsity basketball 74 Coach Gray 75 (Jirl’s f V. Basketball Under Zhe guidance Of Coach Schmid 76 Varsity basketball Eau Claire High School's Boys Basketball team had a season that a lot of teams dream about. The fighting Beavers posted an 18-4 re- cord this year. The record repre- sents Eau Claire High School's best basketball record in over a decade. The Beavers finished second in the conference to a tough Bridgman team to whom they lost to twice. The other two loses came at the hands of a powerful Berrien Springs team one in the regular season, and the other in the district tournament. This years success was attributed to fine over all team play and good pressure defense. The Beavers were led by 5 Seniors, Tracy Nixon, Jeff Jinkins, Bryan Patterson, Charles Smith, and Don Bishop, 1 junior Duane McKinney, and 1 sopho- more Dwight Miller. Other team members who contributed signifi- cantly were seniors Steve Bufford and Darrin Taylor, and juniors Tony Harvey and Billy Joe Harris. The Beavers featured a balanced scoring attack with Tracy Nixon, Jeff Jinkins, Bryan Patterson, and Charles Smith averaging in double figures. Bryan Patterson led the team in rebounding followed by Duane McKinney. Tracy Nixon was the top assit man followed by Dwight Miller. Team captains were Jeff Jinkins, Tracy Nixon, and Charles Smith. As a team the players can be proud of the way they conducted themselves during the course of the season. They made great strides in demonstrating good sportmanship and team play, that hopefully, fu- ture teams will emulate. Great job fellows. Coach Gohlke P.S. I would also like to take this time to thank my three stat. girls, managers, and video man, you did a good job all year long; Cheryl Timmerick, Joan Whitright, San- dra Grandberry, Vincent Crossley, Tim Flagel, Jim Lee, and George Dohm. Hav- ing winning records for this season were No. 3 singles Cheryl Timmreck and the No. 1 doubles team Mike Roth and Ted Coffeen. The 1984 Tennis Team had 19 players. Not one grappler made it to the state finals this year, but we are looking toward seeing them there in the future. Outstanding efforts were put forward by our freshmen Ernie Watson 27-8, Joe Villarreal 22-12, Kurt Ziems 6-22 and Eric Burtchett 8-6. Sophomores Jamie Davis 23-9 and Mark Hart 13-21 also had very good seasons. Junior Tom Lange 5-21-1 struggled early, but came on, losing some close matches at the close of the season. The only senior and captain of the team. Bo Elston, finished the year at 21-10 in probably the toughest weight class in the state. Overall, our wrestlers won 125, while losing only 109, with 1 tie. Out of 125 wins, 66 were pins. Coach Kruithoff 86 Closing As Zhe End Of Zhe fear ... 88 Draws Zo A Close . . . 89 We Zake Zime Zo Reflect Upon . . . 90 Special Moments We’oe Shared . . .
