The 78 Varsity Fight in' Beavers experi- enced the best football season Eau Claire has seen in six years. Our squad tied for 2nd in the Bed Arrow Conference. The Beavers also held the distinction of being the only conference team to defeat Waterv- liel, the final score being 13-12. The Bea- vers continually demonstrated throughout the season their fighting desire to never give up. Against LaLumierc in our opening game, Fau Claire came from behind to win 20 to 14, and against Bridgman the Beavers scored 2 touchdowns in less than 2 minutes defeating them 28 to 24. Even in the sea- son's losses, the Beavers put on outstanding second-half comeback performances. Several members of the gridiron squad received all-conference acclaim. First team selections were: John Classman, at center, Curtis Bolton at halfback, and Brian Harrier at defensive back. Captains: J. Juergensen, T. Garrison. K. Hughes, F. After a 21 game season, the team finished 2-19, their biggest handicap being inexperience. Despite this, the girls' attitude was good. Kristi set a new school record. 30 rebounds in one game. Lori James was the leader in free throws; Lori Butler, most improved player; and Marlene, most valuable player. Kristi also won the Super Beaver Hustle Award. V. 95 Fnmi mu. With the closing of the Middle School, fewer facilities meant practicing at limes ranging anywhere from 2:30 in the afternoon to 10:30 at night. Add to this list typical things that go wrong during any season and one wonders how the Beavers did it. Yet, finish in the Red Arrow. They had the conference’s second leading scorer in Don Geisler. They finished with the third best defensive average in the area. They made the town of Eau Claire into Beaver Believers’’ once more. They gradu- ate some fine seniors in Tim Garrison, Kevin Mitchell, Ken Reschke, Mark Vladic, Jeff Garland and Dave Mottl, yet they return six lettermen, including the number one and two scorers on the team and the number one and two rebounders. Although next season hopes to be better, in spite of just a little inconvenience”, it was a very good year. 100 Captains for 1978-79 season: Mark Vladic, Don Geisler. Not pictured: Kevin Mit hell. December saw our team go from 1-5 mark to Holiday Champions at the Bangor Tourney. January was our best month. Our reeord was 4-2 with victories over Edwardsburg. New Buffalo. Michigan Lutheran, and Waterv- liet. February was the end of the’ ride. We won two of our first three, but then lost John Classman to the Varsity. Our last three games were losses, but the boys never |uit trying. Our season record was 9-11. Leading scorers were Steve Hughes (11.8) and Mike Kremers (10.6). Jim Rodgers and Jeff Watkins led the team defensively, while John Classman was our floor general. Many of these young men hold keys to our Varsity team’s success in the next few years. 103 104 Standing left to right CWh Erie Cohlkr. C«H Soiilh. Ad m . E k CarUnd. Seniors on this year's squad were: Sheri Osborn, Bonita McAfee, Patricia Murphy. Robin Schlipp, and Louann G s- tanza. The squad was involved in a variety of activities during the season. By sponsoring bake sales, selling pom poms and spirit stickers, they were able to purchase coats for their football and basketball uni- forms. 1 JV CHEERLEADERS SPARK SPIRIT I Mount. GIRLS TRACK SENDS 1 TO STATE Tin- Beaver girl s track team was 5-5 overall with a 4-4 conference reconl and a fourth place finish overall. Although the team was small they worked liartl and showed great improvement in many events over the course of tile year. Some of the girls improved so much that five school records were broken this year. Four individuals broke five school records for the girl s team this year: Pam Mollcr in the mile anti two mile, Kathy Molter in the 880. Angie McAfee in the 220 yartl low hurdles, anti Rita Murphy in the shot pul. This year also marks the end of the road, hut in a sense the Itegin- ning. for four senior girls to whom 1 wish all the luck in the world. VARSITY BASEBALL This 1979 hast hall season included many new adventures, high- lights, accomplishments, and disappointments for the Eau Claire Beavers. The team spent spring vacation in North Carolina where we enjoyed whitewater canoe anti raft trips, famous Sliding Rock, and baseball games against the Asheville SehtH l anti Christ School. The Beavers overall record of 10-7 was the first winning season in many years at Eau Claire. Of those seven losses, five were by one or two runs. We finished in third place in the Red Arrow Conference with a 9-5 record. Our seasonal highpoint was defeating Berrien Springs, 2-0 and 12-3, in a doubleheader. Mike Krcmers anti Wayne Masterson were placed on the Red Arrow All Conference team. Dave Cochran, Jeff Juergensen. Rich Loraff. Mike Newman, anti Butch Price math Honorable Mention. Team statistic leaders were: Mike New man hitting .354 anti Dave Bishop hitting .304; Rich Loraff with 22 walks; Jeff J uergensen with nine sacrifice bunts; Butch Price with nine stolen bases; anti Wayne and Scott Masterson each with four pitching victories. Sophomore Jim Rodgers helped the varsity with his consistent play this season. Also. Edit Bishop as st orekeeper and Timmy Flagel as bat boy, contributed greatly to this year's program. 121 122 Karelin : Bonnie Schoene. Lisa Beilman. Miss) Fairbanks. Regina Fairy. Sally Adams. Rebuilding from ihe loss of nine gradu- ated seniors, the Beaver Softballers devel- oped steadily over the course of the season. Buoyed by blithe spirits, the gracious and garrulous gals met and challenged tough competition all season long. The record speaks for itself — 1-18 — and the message conveys the agonies of defeat. But the hope is for the future; and next year, and the year after, the message will become the thrill of victory as this year’s voting and inexperienced players become tough and tested veterans. Highlights of softball-79 include: A — The single victory against Class A Benton Harbor. B — The steady, close-played pre-district game against Cassopolis. C — The selection of Carla Hahn to All- Gmference Softball Team. D — The gutty and gritty Junior Varsity team and their 5-6 season against Class A and B schools. 125 Uft to right, front nw: Virki Moller. Kim Vlaair, Virginia Gonzalez. VARSITY TENNIS The 1979 Eau Clairr tennis tram finished the year with a four and right win-loss m orel. This record reflects the time and effort put in by each member of the team. The teams schedule was unique this year due to the type of matches scheduled: Six varsity matches, four junior varsity matches, and two all girl matches. This schedule allowed all of the members on the team to actively compete in several matches. The year ended with a fine showing of Eau Claire in the tennis regionals held in Niles. John Classman, the number one singles player for our team, reached the quarter-finals before falling to the number one seed of the tournament. Kevin Reed and Mike Dowell, the number one doubles team, Marlene Spletzer and Kathy Wier, the second doubles team, along with the third doubles, Patty Demski and Iori Roth, all won their first round in the meet. The team will be losing several excellent players this year: Kevin Reed, Jeff Garland, lx ri Butler, and Kathy Wier. We will all be sorry to see them leave. The rest of the team is looking forward to an excel- lent season next year. 127 128 129 132 EE ingi of. . . (2uzLO±Ltg EIGHTH GRADE — Pages 133-138 133 First Him — Shrri Andros. David Armstrong.
