Why? That’s the way to go to the Olympics, maybe. At least that is what Don Bailey believes. This year he took a major step in that direction by winning his weight class in the State Weightlifting Meet. Hard work, determination and the satisfaction of knowing he is doing his best, typify Don Bailey and his dream. fJjOtcyv UluL Being a world Class Motocross rider is a dream of many and a reality of few. Eau Claire High School senior Bob Rutter has made his dream a real- ity. This reality like any thing worth- while, has come with much hard work and some personal injuries. Bob started riding at the age of 5, and has been racing pro for more than a year. Bob's credentials in racing include the 1974 District 15 (Indiana and Michigan) high point rider in the 125cc Class, high point District 15 rider in 250cc division. He also won the District hare scramble, and at the Trans AM A Inter- national race, Bob had the Red Bud Trail dialed in with his Bultaco and ran away with a respectable fourth for a third over-all victory. While riding in Florida this spring, Rutter dislocated his shoulder, he came back to win the AMA support class. Among his credits this year are wins at Midland, Michi- gan and Reveno, Ohio. 19 Utss 1976 Ellen Newsome was crowned Miss Eau Claire of the Miss Blossomtime Festival. She is eighteen years old. During her high school years Ellen has participated in cheerleading and vol- leyball. She is a member of the National Honor Society and was Salu- tatorian for her class. Ellen plans to study engineering at Michigan Tech. UtSsCoduS 976 Dena Hartlerode was chosen Miss Sodus in the Miss Blossomtime Pageant for 1976. Dena, a senior at Eau Claire, seventeen years old, enjoys cheerleading and outdoor sports. She plans to attend Patricia Stevens College in Milwaukee to study fashion merchandising and modeling. 21 During the Blossomtime Festival tour of the cities, Mrs. Sharon Gray introduced Ellen Newsome, Miss Eau Claire for 1976. Ellen was chosen Miss Congeniality for the Blossom- time Festival. The queens were honored at an assembly at the High School. 22 Teresa Rankin and Richard Luft reigned over the Junior-Senior Prom at the Elks Club in St. Joseph on May 22, 1976. The theme, Precious and Few, was carried out even to the extent that the band, Atlantic City Steel Pier, played that tune for the coronation dance. Co-chairmen, Teresa Blunier and Mike Fields, and several committees provided the seniors with a memorable evening. 23 24 Ut'Qeotg6' Do- It’ ’ The performing arts departments of ECHS presented a bicentennial musical during the spring. Mr. Down’s art class provided background. Mrs. Bierlein's home economics class made the cos- tumes. Mr. Petersen was in charge of music and Mr. Shoop was the director. This was the first musical in the his- tory of the school. WE THE PEOPLE Qetd i 27 BEING A SENIOR As our childhood draws to an end, we face a new world. A farewell to old friends, but a wonder, an anticipation of things to come. What does the future hold? Tomorrow has the answers. Ellen E. Newsome Qld ICuaJIcimL Sid would have been graduating as a member of the 1976 class. Through his years at Eau Claire High School Sid had participated in many activities, including baseball, foot- ball, manager of the football team and wrestling. He was also active in the Prom Committee and building the homecoming float. Sid was a very kind and special per- son. We will always remember him. A school year of which we are really proud. We are proud of the total dedication of our staff and students whether it was involvement in an athletic event or involvement as a student in one of the many curric- ulum offerings in school. Our students have been dedicated to doing the best job they can. To giving it their best shot and to graduating with the knowledge that regardless of the score they are true winners now as they will be in life. I salute the students and school staff for their dedication and achievement during the 1975-76 school year. Best wishes in all of your future endeavors. Sincerely, Dr. William F. Schaefer III Superintendent of Schools The 1975-76 school year has certainly been a banner year for ECHS and particularly for the 1976 seniors. Academic, musical, athletic, and performing arts heights never before reached were gained. This school year I commend all our students for their contribution to our programs and the contin- ued pride they inspire by this. John A. Laskarides High School Principal 72 TOP LEFT. Once again the Band marching sea- son of super halftime shows fades into the past. A montage of events, drill instruction, field works, trying and lots of yelling becomes etched into the minds of our fine band members and the memories of this and other march- ing seasons will mellow into a feeling of school spirit and enjoyment. Remember the ’’shortest” night rehearsal? Or the time the wind” knocked Mr. Pete's hat off? Or the time you had your feet marked left” and right? 95 BCtM i -----Jdk thbpiMs During the 1975 season, Eau Claire had the special assist- ance of John Martinez, student teacher from Michigan State University. The work he became involved in had a definite positive effect on both the students and himself. Highlights of the halftime shows include ”A Tribute to Bacharach, a Bicentennial show,’ ”A Tribute to Neil Diamond” and others. The band attended the University of Michigan Band Day at Ann Arbor. They started the season a relatively young and inexperienced team with most runners in their first year. Also an addition this year was Eau Claire’s first foreign exchange student. Juha Willman arrived from Finland this fall and proved himself to be a fine runner. Cross country is probably more of a head sport than any- thing else. To be successful, a runner must know his abilities and sometimes do what he thinks he cannot. This is what the E.C. Harriers faced, for with no previous experience, they were not sure of their potential. But under the leadership of Coach Sager and super running of Roger Daugherty, who for two consecutive years has gone to the state meet, this turned out to be the finest season ever for Eau Claire High School Cross Country. 107 After a lull of a couple of years the Eau Claire golf team resumed competition. With several underclassmen the Beavers worked toward experience and a promising future. Team mem- bers this year were Dan Briney, Mark Byers, Brian Ratter, Brian Cuthbert, Wayne Turbyfill, Wayne Skaggs, Steve Nichols and Coach Tom Flagel. 108 KNEELING. Then they suffered back to back losses to Galien and Bridg- man. Coach Dave Gray worked his team as they fought to rebuild their power. The Beavers finished their regular season play with a 12-8 record. Leading scorer Terry Adams was injured for three weeks, but the scoring slack was picked up by junior forward Randy Grandberry. Making the All-Conference team was Red Arrow scoring champion, Terry Adams with an average of 21.5 points per game, the sixth highest average in Red Arrow Conference history. Also making Honorable Mention was Jerry McAfee, who led the team in assist and free-throw percentage. Seniors playing their final year for the Beavers were A1 Flowers, Terry Adams, Don McAfee, Jerry McAfee, Nelson Layman, and Nathan Lanier. This year's JV Basketball squad got off to a relatively slow start. Although they were lacking in speed and experi- ence, the little Beavers were very determined. They were led by Chuck Hunter who provided the scoring punch and by the superb defensive efforts of center Eric Newsome. Combined with Tim Weber quarterbacking the offense, the JV'ers got it all together by winning the Christmas Tournament played on the Beavers home court, first by defeating Gobles, and then the championship game over Michigan Lutheran. After finding new confidence our team went on to make a fine season of the 1975-76 campaign. 112 113 Pioshf-fau® Qeasotv ofa Lmmutg The 1975-76 freshman basketball team includes: KNEELING: Steve Nichols.
