Mr. McAlvey came to Eau Claire in January of 1970 as Superin- tendent of Eau Claire Public Schools. He received his education from several Michigan Colleges. Receiving his Bachelor's Degree from C.M.U. in June of 1940, he then went on to receive his Master’s Degree in June of 1949, from the U. of M. He completed his educa- tion with graduate work at W.M.U. These schools sent him into teaching for eleven years, and as an administrator for thirty-four. Mr. McAlvey is a member of the Eau Claire Lions Club, Berrien Springs Rotary, Benton Harbor United Church of Christ, and many other professional organizations. In his years at Eau Claire, Mr. McAlvey has been instrumental in creating new programs in curricu- lum, as well as, being a major contributor to the plans and building for the new high school. We would like to express our deepest gratitude on behalf of all the many things you have done for our school. The 1974-75 Annual Staff 3 FACULTY M This book filled with pictures and friends of high school days will provide each of you with many fond memories. I trust that in the future as you turn these pages and remin- isce you will be reminded of good old time” as I know I certainly will. The 1974-75 high school student body is a fine group of young people and I am justly proud of each of you. I only hope you have received from your classes, student friends, and teacher associations, a well-rounded background that will assist you in whatever endeavors you decide to pur- sue. To all of you best wishes for a happy and profitable life. Sincerely, Mrs. Schlipp Mrs. Gasi As we pause annually to reflect on the passing of the school year, it always becomes a source of inspiration to me. Looking at our beautiful building, hearing the comments of parents and visitors on the obvious care accorded it by stu- dents gives a sense of pride in our students. The progress reflected in our curriculum and student life areas point out the continued effort of our staff to provide a quality education for the students of E.C.H.S. We look for- ward to make more productive years. 6 Mrs. Chisek Mrs. Young B xW EAjucctfcow Eou Pubfec Qchoofo SEATED, L. to R.: Mr. Jim Nichols. Mr. Bruce Dustin. Mr. William Renbarger. STANDING. The money earned in this drive was used for the Junior-Senior Prom. Other events were money-making projects such as the pan- cake breakfast and selling concessions at the basketball games. A willingness to work and a sense of class responsibility characterized the class of '76. 33 GROUPS SWewfc Senate FRONT ROW: Debbie Dudas. Terrie Durham. Students in the yearbook journalism have the primary purpose of producing the Beaver Tales. A combi- nation of writing, art, layout design, color, advertising, and lots of hard work make up this organization. Edited by Peggy Ferry and Suzanne Beezley, the Beaver Tales has come a tradition of ECHS. The staff, divided into many areas, works within groups to one major goal - the production of the best possible history of Eau Claire High School - The 1975 Beaver Tales. FIRST TABLE: Peggy Perry. Along with producing the newspa- per, class members learned how to write stories, read and correct copy and proof, and sell advertising. The most valuable staffer award from the South Bend Tribune was awarded to Karla Churchill for her work on the Beaver Bark for the past two years. Tours of Andrews University and large businesses in the area are on the agenda for the club. Practical applica- tions of mathematics is the basic purpose of the club. 40 TUougfi U o -Sttuiy Seniors at Eau Claire High School have an opportunity to spend part of their school day away from the building. Many of the sen- iors are learning to work at certain jobs and skills throughout the Eau Claire, Benton Harbor, Berrien Springs, and St. Joseph areas. Waitressing at Mr. Steak from Eau Claire are Karen Hartlerode and Joelene Nichols. This affords them the experience and the opportunity to make money while going to school. Many hospitals in the area have the services of Mike Peppal, Sheila Hartlerode, Mary Ann Felton, Marla Clem, Julie Ward, Gaye Thumn, and Cindy Stolfo. The Eau Claire schools also hire aides and playground assistants. Paul Baily, Taylor Lanier, Barry Westlake, Bob Kelnhofer, Joanne Williams, Wanda Hammersley, Susan Swisher, Susan Simaz, Karen Pifer, Melinda Jones and Regeana Kam all have worked in some capacity for the Eau Claire schools. They learn the inner workings of a hospital in hope that they will consider nursing as an occupation. It is an opportunity to study a career with on-the-job training. Cuuu CJkin Mickey Mouse and Friends was the theme of the Miss Eau Claire contest on March 8. Joelene Nichols was crowned Miss Eau Claire 1975, with Judy Chisek as first runner-up and Miss Congeniality and Alice McAfee as second runner-up. Joelene is a member of the Student Senate. She was a cheerleader for three years. UiS$£o iuS Sfieifift -lojdi iod March 6, 1975, was the date for the Miss Sodus con- test with Sheila Hartlerode reigning as Miss Sodus 1975. The theme, A Fantasy with Peter Pan, added color to the program as Sheila was joined by Heidi Miller as first runner-up. Sheila is a senior at ECHS and a fine representative of her school and her community. 47 AcnvmES Achievement Night at E.C.H.S. offered parents and students the oppor- tunity to see the accomplishments of the various courses offered at Eau Claire. A fashion show, the stage band per- formance, a gymnastics program, sci- ence experiments, and a community education art display were some of the varied activities that were displayed. 49 Royalty KING TAYLOR LANIER and QUEEN SHEILA HARTLERODE 50 SENIOR CANDIDATES WERE: Bob Kelnhofer, Joelene Nichols, Barry Westlake. The Beavers were riding a winning streak and hoped to take the wind out of the Gaels on a day when Walt Disney came to visit Eau Claire. But Galien put a damper on the game festivities by defeating the Beavers. The happy Mickey Mouse atmosphere was lost for a while after the game, but the Jerry Spitzer band brought life back to Eau Claire High School with his lively polka music at the Homecoming dance in the Eau Claire High School gymnasium. The day was presided over by Queen Sheila Hartlerode and King Taylor Lanier. 51 52 3rd Place Middle School 53 2nd Place BAND Bcuui OouMvCiH Mr. Peterson, Director; Grace Skaggs, President; Terasa Rankin, Vice President; Linda Haskins, Secretary. With march- ing at halftime shows and parades, competing in band festivals, and per- forming at concerts, all were kept busy. The Stage Band, which was some- thing new this year, helped to make band more interesting and exciting to the participating students. It per- formed at many activities such as con- certs, the Queen Contest, and Achievement Night. Money making projects this year were candy sales and Rex. With most of the kids getting involved, a good sum of money was brought in. This was used to buy a new drum set for the Stage Band. We extend our appreciation to the band boosters and to all those offering their services throughout the year. BOTTOM ROW, Left to Right: Regeana Karn, Howard Pavlides, Peggy Ferry, Susan Teichman. The Beavers O was awesome. For the outside attack the Beavers had a very speedy back, Taylor Lanier, who with the help of two powerful and bruising guards Howard Pavlides and Rich Far- kas, leading the way gained over 1,500 yards. While to do the inside job, the Bea- vers had the bull-like strength of Sen- ior fullback, Paul Bailey. And to secure the attack with counters and reverses was Don McAfee, a junior wingback with cat-like quickness to finesse the opponents defense. And in order to make this powerful Beaver machine run to perfection they had just the engineer Senior quarter- back, Barry Westlake, who kept his machine well-oiled and in perfect running order. 73 Defensively, the Beavers were feared by every team in the conference with standouts such as big Lynn Manner, who with his 270 pound frame crushed the opponent's halfbacks with no mercy. At each end were juniors, Jerry Hopkins and A1 Flowers, who kept all counters contained and put heavy pressure on the opposing quarterback. At nose guard the Beavers were feared the most with Jun- ior, Lester Smith, giving the opposing centers and guards fits, while trying to keep the speedy nose guard out of their backfield. And at linebacker, the Beavers had a very strong Junior in Don Bailey, and all-state Taylor Lanier. 75 The Beaver defensive backs were also feared. With corner backs, Tony Gonzalez and Bob Kelnhofer, and saf- ties, Scott Bates and Nathan Lanier, Beavers were not worried about any aerial attack by their opponents. Beavers who received honors in 1974 were: Senior: Paul Bailey 1st. team all conference offense and defense Junior: Larry Bartels 1st. team all conference cen- ter Senior: Taylor Lanier 1st team all conference offense and defense and 1st team all-state Record: 6-3 76 J. To go along with a fine team you need a fine coach, which created no problem for our J.V.’s because they have some of the finest coaches they could want. The Head Coach was Den- ton Kime and the Assistant Coach’s position was held by Ray Deja. These young men fought their hard- est in every game. They gave their opponents all they wanted and then some. They ran over, around, and through their opponents defense. Defensively, our J.V.'s made bruis- ing tackles almost every play. And with all this manpower returning, Coach Kime is looking forward to a future championship in '75. 77 KNEELING, Left to Right: Tim Weber, Dan Newman, Craig Ruple, Brian Dohm, Faith One. This year showed us many new faces and much success. From the start of the three mile race to the end you think only of trying to run a little faster, to catch and beat the man in front of you, and to improve your time. Psyching up, plays a major role in run- ning Cross Country. It is very easy to talk yourself out of it. Roger Daugherty went to the state meet at Lansing and placed 49th. He is the second EC Harrier to run in the state competition and the highest finisher. Another new addition this year was Faith Otte. The only girl ever to run Cross Country at Eau Claire, and with a lot of pride and determination, she defeated some of the guys. 78 cutif Vanity Ba ktfbcM FRONT ROW, L to R: Don McAfee, Coach David Gray, Jerry McAfee. When hot, the Beavers were unstoppable. But when the time came to replace anyone of them, the Beavers had no gripes, because on the bench sits four more very capable threats in Don McAfee, Gordon Archer, Nelson Layman, and Randy Grandberry, who would pose a new threat to anyone.
