It is our hope that you will find this annual to be a lasting momento in the years to come. To Mrs. Ardis Stenbakken we dedicate our 1965 BEAVER TALES in appreciation for all of the guidance, help, and understanding she has given. In the years to come, we will no doubt think back and discover that she instilled in us a sense of respect and responsibility towards the world around us, and in the final analysis find that she made us learn. For these things we express our sincere appreciation. The evening began with the dinner which consisted of swiss steak, mashed potatoes, a vegetable, and desert. The music was provided by Don Campbell's orchestra. Every- one danced to the many tunes played throughout the night. Half-way through the evening the King and Queen were crowned. Alice Bailey and Wayne Rodell walked away with honors. After the crowning, the grand march took place and everyone prome- naded around a beautifully lighted water fountain. 1 8 Nancy Sanders Mike George Peg LaVanway Ken Wheeler These are prime examples of the handsome couples that attend the Vickie Vance Harold Hirscn 1964 JUNIOR-SENIOR PROM. RICHARD BRAME Tne 1964 Beaver football team, winless in 8 games, looks forward to 1965 with brighter prospects. With several key players out of action for most, or all,, of the season, and having to call upon many inexperienced players, the Beavers never did get on the victory track. Next year's football team will be led by Rex Thornton and Carl Price, both three-year lettermen. There should be a fine turn-out for next year, including 17 returning lettermen and many fine, young prospects. Seniors that played their last high school football for Eau Claire this year were Kenny Wheeler and Jim Hawn. Kenny Wheeler is a two-year letterman, and was voted the team Inspirational Award. Rex Thornton was voted team chptain for 1964. RICHARD BRAME FOOTBALL COACH VARSITY FOOTBALL FIRST ROW L. TO R: E. Menchinger, B. Cain, R. Thornton (captain), D. Bailey, K. Wheeler, J. Hawn, R. Dave Fuson, junior varsity basketball coach Optimistically, we had hoped to show improvement over our preceding season's re- cord; unfortunately, wins versus losses re- mained the same. Although we didn't win more ball games, we did succeed in making some of them more interesting. I feel im- provement was shown, since many of the con- tests were closer. We'll miss the graduating seniors — Vic Savich, Jim Allen, John Froehlich, Harold Hirsch, and Allen Hartwig— for they have contributed to laying the foundation for future Beaver success. Be- cause of participation on their part and a strong desire to win on the part of returning team members, we can start to reap the benefits of our endeavors. MR. GEORGE GAUNDER VARSITY COACH This year's Junior Varsity basketball Emil Wright were right there with 7.6 and team shows some promising athletes. Among 5,0 shot averages. Second Johnson, Jeff Vladic, one of the top throwers of shot put, shows us his excellent form. The bright spot of Eau Claire's track team last year was the jumping and throwing power of the team. In the Berrien Relays Victor Savich won the broad jump and Jim Kasa and Jeff Vladic took 2nd and 3rd places respectively in the shot-put. In the Conference Meet Jeff took 1st place in the shot-put. The Regionals found the same three again with Vic jumping 20' 21 2 for 1st place and Jeff throwing the shot 47'4 for second while Jim finished third in the shot-put. Eau Claire ended up with 12 points, which was good enough for 6th place out of 21 schools. We sent three representatives to the State Meet, but luck was against us. ■ Vic Savich leaps for victory Atkins gives baton to Utmp during relay. 1964 EAU CLAIRE 60LF TEAM Paul Sharpe, Jim Flore, Coach Beellch, Jeff Vladlc, and Jim Kasa 41 1964 Football Cheerleaders Varsity Cheerleaders: Jo Romeo, Alice Bailey, Claudia Skinner, Mary Brookins, Barbara Tillman. The elections are held each spring with campaigning and mud slinging! The rest of the members are elected from each class and chartered clubs. The purpose of the Student Council is to further student-teacher relations. A studfent-teacher confer- ence was held to discuss how to improve class room procedure and the school in general. There were a few students from each class on a panel that con- fronted some of the teachers. The Student Council also takes care of all matters concerning the homecoming, such as the parade and dance. Through the cooperation of stu- dents and faculty, the Student Council has functioned well this past year. 47 LEFT FRONT TABLE: I. Cohen; W. Case; M. Brookins; A. Sponsor; J. Hawks. For the first time, this year the paper has been printed by the Trade Lines and next year may include advertising to help cover the cost. In an effort to gain a better working knowledge of the fundamentals of editing a newspaper, the staff toured a newspaper office to observe the presses in action. This knowl- edge has become invaluable tn bringing a better paper to the students at Eau Claire. 48 Front row, (L. to R.k G. Bennett- Secretary, S. Cantrell- Treasurer, Miss Wilson- Advisor, N. The purpose of the Future Home- makers is to create a further interest in homemaking by contributing to better home, school, and community life. All girls enrolled in high school home eco- nomics classes or who have taken a course in home economics are eligible for membership. Some of the club's activities include selling cookbooks and having group dis- cussions. They sponsored a dance together with the FFA to obtain money for their treasury. 49 FIRST ROW: T. The purpose of the organization is to develop farming ability, leadership, and cooperative attitudes in rural youth of America. In December the club went on a field trip which took them to the International Livestock Show. They have also participated in the Berrien County Soil Judging contest and contributed to the observance of National Safety Week. 50 First Row; N. Freehllng, Student Council; L. FUTURE NURSES OF AMERICA No other club participates as much outside of school as does our recently organized Future Nurses Club. The main function of this club is to prepare girls interested in nursing as a future career. In their blue and white striped uniforms, members worked at the Berrien County Hospital throughout the year as candy stripers. Guest speakers were invited to give an informal talk about nursing and the field of medicine. 52 First Row; Donna Langer, President; Mrs. K. A11 meetings are conducted in French and are held during class period on Friday of every other week. All the second year French students are members of the club. Next year, it is hoped that there will also be third year French. For activities they played French scrabble and Voila (Bingo). During Christmas the French Club put on a program displaying Christmas in France. They were also enter- tained by a guest speaker and learned about the French culture. 53 FIRST ROW: I. MATH-SCIENCE CLUB The Math-Science Club is one of Eau Claire's more limited member- ship clubs. Only those persons that have met all the math and science requirements and have maintained above a 2.5 average are allowed to join, or can become members by ma- jority vote of the club. Of the many things to be accomplished, the most important is to complete at least one project under the supervision of the sponsors. These projects can be either written on experimental and are to be done in any manner which the student desires. As a final requirement of the club, members are ex- pected to display their projects at Spring Achievement. LIBRARY CLUB This year the Library Club has been quite busy. They have moved the location of the library twice; it was a big job moving all of these books, but the improvement has been well worth it. The library has added a section for college catalogs this year which has been a great help to the seniors, and is building up an occupational infor- mation materials center that should aid everyone in his search for a place in the world. GaU Mull performs one of her many duties as an assistant librarian. 55 Left to Right-First row; D. Bailey, parliamentarian; T. Hartlerode, treasurer; K. Colpltts, V. President; R. SPEECH CLUB The purpose of the Speech Club is to pro- mote better speaking through plays, parlia- mentary procedure, and all speaking activities. Since the Speech Club was one of the many newly formed organizations, this year has been more a trial and error period than anything else. They've sold Beaver pillows at the games, had bake sales, sold candy and worked on a school play. The money they received was enough to start buying properties for plays. Some of the things they hope to buy this year and in the years to follow include: a microphone, records, pictures or movies, spotlights, back drops on a pully and other things as they are needed. 56 FIRST ROW - T. R I N T E N D E N T DON K. SILCOX The nation that has the schools — has the future. In Eau Claire our objective is to use the school facilities not to teach school but to teach people. Learning is an active process and we want to be on the move at all times — to correct past deficiencies, to meet current needs and to build the foundation for a strong educational system for the future. It is my pleasure to be your school superintendent. Don K. Silcox Superintendent 65 Time is a very fleeting thing — I'm sure that most of you concur with this thought when you realize how rapidly the past four years have slipped away. Undoubtedly, the most valuable possession that each ot us has in this world is time. How we use this precious item will, to a great extent, determine whether we meet with success or failure. I sincerely hope that in addition to any academic competencies learned, you have developed a sincere regard for the constructive use of your time, a deep appreciation of what it means to be an American, and a true sense of values. THE LONG ROAD AHEAD We've done a lot of traveling since we started school. It wasn't a very fast pace, more like that of a mule. It seems like it's been a long time; but I think instead, that there's still a long, long road ahead. We're like a group of substitutes, going into the game. If we play it fair and square, we'd come out with fame, But before we start the game, we've got to use our head. And realize that there's a long, long road ahead. We've had a lot of fun with our pals and faculty, And when we leave, it'll be a cherished memory, We hope we are still ready, for we're the ones who said, That there's a very, very long road ahead. CLASS OF 1965 ou are richer today than you were yesterday ... if you have laughed often, given something, forgiven I even more, made a new friend to- day, or made stepping-stones of stumbling-blocks; if you have thought more in terms of “thyself” than of “myself, or if you have managed to be cheerful even if you were weary You are richer tonight than you were this morning ... if you have taken time to trace the handiwork of God in the common- place things of life, or if you have learned to count out things that really do not count, or if you have been a little blinder to the faults of friend or foe :: You are richer if a little child has smiled at you, and a stray dog has licked your hand, or if you have looked for the best in others, and have given others the best in you.
