V f LIBRIS FORE WORD We hope that in the years to come you will be able to look back and remember the good times as shown to you in this year- book. We also hope you will spend many a minute looking through this book and read every part of it from the Foreword through the Advertisements. We hope you will enjoy reading this book as much as we enjoyed giving it to you. Now let's turn the pages and see who makes up the Faculty, Students, and Activities. We give to you our book ■-The 54 Beaver Tales. The Editors -J a % j $ sbr fe JPe Mc {j V 1 )oU1aH'fjP jj IQu aJuJL 3juLs S jbni rlj Cs£ol aj cfcuj CJh AJL y cJL a We, the Senior Class of 19$i+, wish to dedicate our annual to you, our Parents. You are the ones who count the most in our lives. It was you who helped us our first days of school and have guided us all the years since. You laughed when we laughed, listened to all our problems, and helped us in every possible way. Because of your unselfishness, we were able to have the clothing, books, and other things which, we thought, we just couldn't live without. Because of your strong interest in all school activities, and because you supported new projects, both academic and ex- tracurricular, you have developed our school into one of which we are extremely proud. Now as we look into the years that lie ahead of us, we feel that we should show you, our Parents, that all your sac- rifices have not been in vain, that we can go into the world and make a living of our own. Personal achievement will be our goal and a way of showing you our gratitude. It is our pleasure to dedicate this our Book of the Year to you, our PARENTS. cdlAs (1 cn turvtu Administration- Underclassmen Activities Athletics Advertisements Editor------------- Assistant Editor— Publicity Director Business Manager— Theresa Wilbur Patsy Kalinas Barbara Martin Jim Young •Alice Bahus Janice Collins Advertising Sales--------------------------------------—Nancy LaVanway Sally Tidey Year Book Sales----------------------------------------Kathryn Dickson Sports Editor-—----------------------------------------Sam Dunaetz Les Duncan Social Editor------------------------------------------Eldon Merrill Chuck Walters Literary Editor------—---------------------------------Jack Dukesherer Eldon Paustian Bud Herman Art Editors--------------------------------------------Jerry Mitchell Bill Barker Alumni Editor Class Editor- Sponaors----- Linda Prank Nancy LaVanway Jerry Kremers •Mrs. Perris Mr. Pormsma Seated: Pres., Ed Holle; Sec., William Likes; Trustee, Anna Handy; Standing: Trustee, Jay Staley; Supt., O.C. The mixed chorus, consisting of .fifty-three members, is open to all high school students with a desire to sing. The months of October and November saw us hard at work rehearsing the one act operetta, Moiyitaln Music which was performed for the November meeting of the P.T.A. and also the grade and high school. The new semester ushered in endless hours of practice to prepare ourselves for the Berrien County Vocal Festival in St. Joseph in which the entire group participated. This being our first four part singing meant much work by the group collectively as well as individually.0 The mixed chorus shared the program honors with the Band at the First Annual Spring Concert held in the high school auditorium. The initial enrollment was small but as the year progressed new mem- bers were added as rapidly as the beginning students qualified. The group now boasts twenty-five musicians and two twirlers. Our appreciation goes to the School Board who furnished us with a new bass drum, music stands, and much music. They also made it possible for us to repair five school owned instruments. The group's activities began in October when the band made its de- but at the monthly P.T.A. meeting, playing several marches. Although we were not ready to participate, the band traveled to Ben- ton Harbor where we observed the annual fall marching contest, an event in which we hope to take part in future years. A portion of the members formed the Pep Band which was organized pre- vious to the basketball season and did its share in maintaining the school spirit and pride at the home games as well as at the pep meetings. The month of January found the band performing its first radio broad- cast when it took part on the school program sponsored by WHFB. The year's activities closed with the First Annual Spring Concert which programed the instrumental and vocal departments, the band playing both marches and concert selections. Recognition should go to Shirley Rodell, Patsy Kalinas, Glenda La- Vanway, and Floyd Wheeler who represented the instrumental department with special music for various school events. Also special mention should be made of the two senior members of the band: Bud Herman and Jerrv Kremers. Twins????? How many students catch glimpses of Ted In movement of a fellow student? Many of Ted's classmates unconsciously have picked up little Innuendoes and mannerisms that were Ted's, what greater proof than this that, Ted, was loved and Idolized by all? Not only by those that copy his mannerisms but also those that can see and recognize his mannerisms In others. Ted was undoubtedly best known for his athletic prowess but its not the baskets he made, the base hits he got or the pitching he did that we miss. We realize now that these were far over shadowed by his quick smile, his ready wit, his helping hand, and his fighting spirit. Often these show through in the action of a fellow student and our minds pause for a moment, remembering, TED. XAms ZfAjLaX s rtAMjr 7j oXuj JL Xtu, cufrfjts v BACK ROW: Mr. Rhinard (coach), A. ' Kau Claire fielded a track team ast year for the first time in twii •fM many years. In their first meet (a league practice meet at New Buffalo) the • Beaver thin clads surprisingly came in a very close second. The Beavers in an unofficial capacity ran in a meet with Buch- anan and Berrien Springs, also a five team meet with members of the league and then in the official league meet at Niles scored enough points to come home with the runna- up trophy. In the meet points were captured for Eau Claire by Ronnie Guertel, George Dohm, Bill Kruegeij Jerry Mitchell, Don Nichols, and John Bailey. Jerry Mitchell took four firsts Cat the regional track meet in Kal- ?amazoo, to qualify for the state finals. At the state finals in Ann Arbor a week later Jerry won the 100 yard dash in 10.6 sec.,the 220 yard dash in 22.9 sec., break- .ing a state record. He, won the broad jump with a ' leap of 20'9i and tied for 2nd in 1 the high jump at 5'8 . Jerry Mitchell FIRST FOOTBALL GAME EAU CLAIRE 6 - SCHOOLCRAFT 33 Eau Claire's first football game in 10 years was played at Schoolcraft on September 18, 1953« Eau Claire fans had a chance to cheer when Jerry Mitchell received a Schoolcraft kick-off and raced 95 yards for a touchdown. The outstanding players were fullback Jim Young, who plunged for an average of 4. yards a try; ends, Don Nichols and John Bailey who consistently stopped Schoolcraft's sweeps. Tackle Sam Dunaetz was in on a majority of the tackles in the line. The rest of the Eau Claire team played hard, but the Beaver's inexperience was evident. OCTOBER 9, 1953 EAU CLAIRE 6 - NEW BUFFALO 32 Eau Claire's fledgling ballteam journeyed to New Buffalo to be given a valuable lesson by the experienced New Buffalo eleven. The Beavers found new heroes in the passing of Freshman, Jerry Hauch and the snagg- ing of Junior end, John Bailey, this duo completed four for four, one for a touchdown. Mitchell and Young were again the leading ground gainers. Other bright stars showing up on the Eau Claire horizon was the defensive play of Freshman, Don(Elroy) Hirsch and Arthur Viel. OCTOBER 15, 1953 EAU CLAIRE 13 - DOWAGIAC RESERVES 25 The Beavers scored first after recovering a Dowagiac fumble in the first quarter. Jerry Mitchell scored the first touchdown, and Jim Young plunged for the extra point. Young later scored the Beaver's second touchdown, but the conversion attempt failed. Although Eau Claire's defense was inept for the most part, good defensive performan- ces were turned in by Jerry Mitchell, Ronnie Kunst, Sam Dunaetz, and Bud Herman. OCTOBER 22, 1953 EAU CLAIRE 7 - EDWARDSBURG B 6 Eau Claire played the entire first half without a good many of it's re- gluars. It was a pretty even affair with the exception of a I4.3 yard Eddie pass to give Edwardsburg a 6 point half time lead. In the third quarter J.Mitchell intercepted an Eddie pass on his own I4.O and carried all the way to pay dirt. Jim Young, leading Eau Claire ground gainer, who consistently ripped the Edwardsburg line for gains of 10 to 16 yards and carried the extra point. Stellar stars of the BEAVERS defen- sive plays were Sam Dunaetz, Carl Frazee, Ronnie Kunst, Ed. Gustafson, and Art Viel. Viel, a Freshman consistently stopped Edwardsburg in the center of the line. Beavers offensive load was carried by Jim Young, J. Mitchell, and Dick Farkas with the offensive line of D. Schadt, Ed. Gustafson, and Jack Dukesherer clearing the way. OCTOBER 30, 1953 EAU CLAIRE 13 - HEW TROY 0 After a scoreless first half the Beavers cut loose and crossed the New Troy goal four times. Twice, George Dohm, dashed sixty yards to seera- ingiy pay dirt only to have both runs cancelled by penalities. To start the third period George grabbed a New Troy pass on his own 1 0, althoudi he was completely surrounded and hit several times, he was not stopped. A clipping penalty nullified his effort. Later in the third period, Don (Elroy) Hirsch grabbed a blocked Trojan pass and scampered 4.0 yarcfe for 6 points. Mitchell's try for the point resulted in a 15 yard pen- alty for illegal use of hands. In the second attempt Parkas connected on a pass to John Bailey. John was knocked out of bounds on the five. Score 6-0. In the I4.U1 period, John picked up a fumble on his own ten yard line and kicked his way up the side line behind the beautiful blocking of the entire Eau Claire team. Jim Young crashed for the ex- tra point. Score was 13-0. Later in the period George broke through tackle and was off on the 2nd of his hapless runs, this one called back for illegal use of hands. The Beavers won 13-0. NOVEMBER 6, 1953 EAU CLAIRE 0 - GALIEN 27 The game started with the Beaver's looking great . They stopped Gallen cold for the first quarter. The Beavers made it to the Galien 3 yard line but were stopped. George Dohm and Jim Young gained most of the yardage for Eau Claire. The 2nd quarter Gallen scored once more. In the fourth quarter Eau Claire took over and pushed Galien all over the field but failed to score. It was Jack Dukesherer's, Sam Dunaetz's, Jim Young's, and Bud Herman's, last game for Eau Claire.
