BEISER Superintendent A.B., Central Michigan College M.A., University of Michigan They Build During the past year. the main purpose of the Board of liducation has been the improvement of the curriculum in our public schools. One of the niost predominant issues has been that of reorcfanization of the school system. An area studies report was given to the Board which recommended consolidation as the only solution for overcrowded conditions. Our enrollment started to increase in 1945. and since that time nearly six hundred additional students have entered school. The question of reorganization opened when nine- teen rural schools circulated petitions in favor of this. proposition. 3 M RS. CHARLOTTE Nl V '57 - .4 SMITH Superintendentk St'crt'tary MR. C. L. Beiscr, superintendent. Good Citizens In the field of recreation the Board has approved work on the athletic held for added space. and a large area has been prepared for winter skating. Another aim has been nlled toward better educa- tion by adding an elementary teacher in charge of children with special problems. Also a more com- plete program has been established in hearing. vision. and mental examinations. In the high school. committees have been work- ing to improve the various departments. Every year the many students who do not assume the adult responsibilities necessary for a well-balanced school life present a greater problem. This year the Board has done more to correct these problems. P OFFICE HELP-Seated: Judy Kowalk. Carol Shaw. Standing: Edmund Cupp. Carole Rishel. Mrs. Smith. Dale jones. A number of students give of their time to serve as office assistants and hall receptionists. The duties of an assistant in one of the offices are very much the same as the responsibilities taken on in a typical business office. In the course of an hour. typing. filing. running errands. and answering the telephone are a few of the duties they perform. The receptionists are situated in the hrst floor hall where they greet visitors and give any helpful information that is necessary. These hosts and hostesses were appointed by the Student Council for one semester. OFFICE HELP-Saundra Christie. Mrs. Squires. Jo Ann Hetrick. Barbara Haskell. Carol Clarke. Contest Work Interests Speech Students Certain basic rules serve as guide-posts to help speech students reach their goals of ease in speak- ing and platform poise. In addition to the class- room activities where these rules are stressed. sev- eral outside activities have become traditional for the speech students. One of these is the I Speak For Democracyu national contest sponsored locally by the Jaycees. Sixty-two students participated in this contest. The spring Forensic Contest provides another valuable opportunity for speech activity. This year . . . X twenty-seven people participated: all drew high ks mittee of Michigan State University judges headed by Dr. Hugo David. who appraised their efforts as of high caliber. The advanced speech class had a variety of activities: speeches based on personal interviews. original orations, one-act plays before community groups. radio and story-telling programs for the grade school. and a field trip to WKAR radio and television station. . ll 1.14 Here Janice is reminding herself. Meeting each Monday noon throughout the year, the staff saw their annual come to life under the patient hands of the production staff: Bill Connelly, Sharon Goodrich, Carole Rishel, Phil Skinner, Errol Zentmyer, and Norman Lyon. Patty Wyckoff, editor in charge of lay-out, was assisted by Kay Rossman in securing the pictures to illustrate the book. Copy editors Barbara Jankovich and Saundra Christie meet a weekly deadline. Dear Ruthfi The play was under the direction of Mrs. Margaret Doyle. assisted by student directors Kay Rossman and Wilma Reed. The mix-up started when Miriam. the sixteen-year-old sister, became involved in letter-writing with Lieutenant William Seawright by signing her older sister Ruth's name. Her bewildered parents were amazed by her antics, and matters only became more confused by 'Ruth's jealous boyfriend, to whom she was supposedly engaged. Hilarity continued when the GI came home to take Ruth as his bride. But she didn't reveal the truth. and the whole family became involved in the plot. A marriage ceremony took place in the living room of the family, but it was that of Lieutenant Seawrights sister. Things were finally straightened out, however, and laughter prevailed as the cur- tains closed on the very humorous ending. ' W -gli --N PECK'S BAD BOY Another exceptional comedy, UPeck's Bad Boy, was presented by the seniors of ,So on November 18, 1955. Miss Mary Morrow directed the play with the assistance of Delores Bergstad. The play centered around Henry Peck junior, who was the bad boy that schemed against his elders in a way to irritate them. Henry and his friend, Jimmy Duffy, and his girl, Minnie, plotted against Mr. Peck, who had remarried without his son's consent. His stepmother controlled her daugh- ter and Mr. Peck, but was unable to keep the pranks of Henry Junior in check. The teenagers also teased the cook, who was constantly threaten- ing to leave, and they stirred up the temper of the Italian butcher. Through their eavesdropping they carried their devilish plans even further by taking it upon them- selves to invite three former girl friends of Mr. Peck to their home. The jealous mother was enraged over the recent happenings in the household. Henry Peck Senior, who had always before cringed at the presence of his Wife, with the prodding of his son, at last stood up for his own rights. Henry Peck Junior, after these events, finally de- cided that there was some encouragement to be a 'Kgood boy. nr Peck unior admits he cannot tell a lie when he is He y - sv accused of calling the three sirens. .,, School Dances Draw Large Crowds 11 1 1 1111 11 1111 1611 111111 1 1 1 1111111 1111 X111 1111 11111114 11116 111o1111e11 6116111111 enter 1211111116111 1 111111111 111 1116 Ca111C111 11111111 11111 1 111e1111e11 e 11111111 1 1111111 Nt 1111 1111 111111 r r 11111 111 1 V 111 I 111 ll 11 HUU1 I 1 1 11 I1 111111 r 1 11 1 UL I 111 T 111 l11 1 X N X 1 il 1111111 11'1111 U 5' f1i11LlN 1'l111'Kf 10111 C XLTX 1111111111 11 f L Q1 I'11I'lf' NOUI' 1'l'11'11C 11 110 1'1I11C1' C ITIL!
