lems of keepmg the peace We ln Amer 1ca have been most fortunate No natlon has emerged from the war as nearly normal as our own We have not been subjected to the battles and great devastatlon wrought by war therefore It IS hard for us to reallze what xt means to face the stag gerlng tasks of reconstruction Our statesmen of today face prob lems entlrely dlfferent from those pre sented by World War 1 We have to deal on the human level with hunger and cold mdlfference and sufferlng On the economic level there IS runaway ln flatlon m many countrxes and a press mg danger of lt ln our own nation w1th which to cope On the political level there xs danger of revolt 1n Indla Ch1na Iran and Indonesla Many countries are seethlng wxth unrest and turmoll Even the vlctorlous natlons are st1ll maneu yermg for strategic posltlons on a m1l1 tary map Certamly the respons1b1l1ty for mak mg a peace rests above all on the na tion that IS the most nearly normal as the war ends All of the other maJor powers Great Br1ta1n Ch1na RUSSIH and F rance-have been greatly weak fered durmg the war The wlnners have undergone terrlble sufifermg beyond mourning for loved ones lost ln the war Yes even we have suffered Our commumcatlon systems are weak be cause of thelr overuse durmg the war period but they are not broken Many homes are ln crltlcal need of repair our transportation system IS run down but not crippled However the beauty of our country sides has not been marred by battles Our homes have not been bombed Our churches and schools st1ll stand mtact We c1v1l1ans have not been drly en by starvation to hunt for morsels of food ln garbage cans We have not been forced to wear threadbare cloth mv because It was all we had We have not had to go barefooted or wear paper rags for shoes In some respects we have advanced because of the war Our lndustrlal plants have expanded We have more ships and planes There are more skllled laborers We are benehtmg from 1nven tlons and scientific developments whlch were hastened because of the war Be cause of the training offered servlcemen yyhlle in unlform and after they re celye then' dlscharges our educatlonal standards have rlsen We have was the selling of hot dogs at the Mason football game We were pleased to find the weather cold and the people hungry Durmg the Chrlstmas season we sold Christmas wreaths which added much to the spirit of the season but they also added many scratches to our arms as Herb Sherman well knows Never will we forget the M E A In stltute or the dmner given for the teachers I hope all the coffee the teach ers drank was not used for the sole purpose of fortlfylng them for teaching The Jumors both boys and gurls played a promlnent part ln the Intra murals Although the boys lost the glrls came
