THE CLASSICAL WORLD From sorties off Malta, the EATON joined the Sixth Fleet in earnest and steamed through the Eastern Mediterranean and the Aegean, past ghosts of the Pelopennesian and Persian Wars, past Doric Isles of Delos andMelos, into Thessalonika, Thrace, the second largest city in Modern Greece. Those who took the tour to Mount Ethos found the rocky wilderness of Grecian Thrace. The others found Salonika a bustling commercial port with even a Russian ship in evidence. From Salonika, the fleet headed down the Aegean to Piraeus, the port of Athens. Ancient Greece was noted for its potter and statues.
