As we attempted to plan this yearbook, we scanned previous years annuals and a great many thoughts filled our minds. Those special phrases and tear arousing thoughts which we sometimes read, made us stop and think how quickly the years we have spent in school have gone. Thus, through the 1969 edition of the Aquila, we hope to instill in you, the reader, the idea to return to past memories and for one moment, remember the sad, happy, and surprising moments of your school days. The Sands of Time is the theme of this book, if not for unification, for stimulating your thoughts. We sincerely hope that every time you see this hourglass, the picture over which it Lies, or read the following quotation, you will have one pleasant memory of your days at EI-IS to recall. Take my hand, I'm a stranger in paradise, All lost in a wonderland, A stranger in paradise. Princes come, Princes go, An hour of pomp and show - they know' Princes come - and over the sands And over the sands of time - they go. Wise men come, Ever promising - the riddle of life to know, Wise men come, Ah, But over the sands, The silent sands of time - they go. 'H' For these reasons, we, the staff, would like to dedicate this, the 1969 Aguila, to you, the stu- dents of Eastwood, and to those students who, with the Sands of Time, have spent remembered days at EHS. To EVERY STUDENT, past and present, we dedi- cate the 1969 Aguila. I We Dedieate The 1969 quila. The year 1968 will long be remembered as a significant step in the educational program in the Eastwood School District. The Eastwood Board of Education re- mains aware that their prime purpose is to provide a rich educational expe- rience for all boys and girls in the dis- trict. With this purpose in mind, a proposal for a building program was presented to the electorate. Again, the citizens of Eastwood have demon- strated their respect for improved edu- cation and intellectual discipline. A great number of people responded to the educational needs in the district and worked unselfishly so that our youth could attend school in modern, well-equipped buildings. The board of education commends the Eastwood citizens who recognize that the only realistic solution to the many social and physical problems of today is a sound educational system. Today, we are faced with new problems that force a challenge to all citizens in Eastwood and in the state of Ohio. While we must continue to meet the educational and cultural needs of our youth, a growing concern is recognized in regard to the inequalities of oppor- tunities for the youth of this state. The board of education, the admin- istration, and faculty offer our sincer- est congratulations to the citizens of Eastwood for your forward educational attitude and your desire to provide the best for your children. We pledge to serve this community to the best of our ability and encourage all citizens to become more active participants in their schools. The basic fundamen- tals of sketching, painting, and ceramics are taught in the first years of art. In more advanced years of art, the projects become more difficult and the student's abilities are relied on more fully. It is evident to the students at Eastwood that those girls enrolled in the Home Ec program are gaining a great deal of knowledge through the mouth watering odors which emerge from the door of this class. Tailored outfits which are displayed in the spring of the year are further proof of the gains of the pupils enrolled in the tailoring classes. Industrial Arts Is The Language Of Industry The basics of carpentry are taught in the industrial arts classes. With all the mate- rials and machinery close at hand, the stu- dents can make any of the various and use' ful projects they wish. ln mechanical drawing, the students learn much about planning and designing. Teaches Safe Driving Skills Driver's Education is one of the many new extracurricular cours- es which is presented to the students in Eastwood High School due to the passing of the new law in the state of Ohio. There are three different high school teachers who give up their time to instruct students. These trained instructors are Mr. Fred Koester, Mr. Gary Bierly, and Mr. Keith Neiderkohr. The Driver's Education class meets one night weekly during the second semester from 7:00 to 9:00. During this time, the class learns the many rules of driving safely. On some occa- sions the teacher will present movies to the class on how their lives can be affected by poor driving habits. Students will not have completed the course until summer when they will spend many hours in actual driv- ing situations, either behind the wheel themselves, or observing the driving of one of their class- mates. Physical education is one of the major re- quirements at Eastwood High School. The boys' phys. ed. classes are taught by Mr. Paul Rolf while the girls' classes are volley- ball, basketball, hockey, archery, and baseball. By teaching the students these things, Eastwood High School hopes to point out the importance of being physically fit. Going hand and hand with physical education is health. This course instructs the students to follow good health habits. This instruc- tion will enable the students to be better aware of the body and its treatments. The football half-time shows, the Christmas Concerts, the musical, and the annual Pops' Concert, as well as Contest all are activities participated in by members of band and cho- rus. ln addition, the Drill Corps and majo- rettes add colorful touches of precision to the Eastwood Department Entertainment. Students interested in extra-curricular mu- sic may take part in ensembles, Swingin' E'z, Girls' Chorus, Mixed Chorus, Marching or Concert band, or Orchestra. .lg 3 3 ,r-, g:zgggjsgfz2p f:- 1 ,,: r H151-if se is - ,- K4 f ggi 2 v , l ,M 'X W fe , 4 ABOVE: Another of the sections which make up our mighty band, RIGHT: Sopranos are seen working on Contest 32 numbers. f-- 2 vi ii- mr,-. . . Hansen receives instructions from His Royal Majesty King Arthur. With the continous interruptions of 'Lance', Pellinore has a difficult time making his chess move! The great halls of King Arthur's Court found their way to the stage of Eastwood High School on November 15, 16, and 17. Tim Meyer as King Arthur and Kathy Oehmke as Queen Guenevere played the leading roles in the musical Camelot, Raleigh Smith, Roger Weber, and Roger Welling filled the supporting roles. The characters portrayed by these people were Pellinore, Merlyn, and Lancelot, respectively. The developed plot is built around the dra- matic change in the life of King Arthur. This change is caused by the arrival of a young woman who is to be the Queen and wife of Wart. After the departing of Mer lyn, Wart is faced with the task of thinking for himself. As time goes by, Wart is trans formed into the mature and majestic King Arthur, who has to face alone the fall of all his ideas and hopes. One of the highlights of the perforrn- ance was Lancelot's, R. Welling, Crest Moi- H And a one, and a two, and a ready - hir it! r ABOVE: The Lusty Month of May as portrayed by the V Royal Coury. Dixie Highway Bowling Green, Ohio As business manager for the 1969 Aquila, I extend my sincerest gratitude to the various merchants for their patronage, the staff members who helped in soliciting ads, the staff photog- raphers for their work in making the ads, like the rest of the yearbook, a pictorial section this year, and all those who contributed time and effort in financing the Aquila. Written here is only a small token of appreciation. ' Sincerely, Qfflayto Diane Brinker Business Manager eeffc Acknowledgments To the reader, It must be remembered that in every work which today's world manufactures, there are a great many helping hands moving to make the result a success. This is true in .the production of a yearbook, too. In order to meet deadlines, have pictures taken, and record the year's happenings to the fullest, co-ordination between staff members and book materials must be displayed. Because of the staff's dedi- cation this year, we were able to obtain this co-ordination. To them, many thanks. Many individuals proved very important in the production of the 1969 Aguila. Among these persons was alumnus, Ron Grolle, who kept his eyes open and found the hourglass seen on the division pages. Thanks! Also my thanks to Denny Walston for his ingenuity and long hours of work in photographing and processing pictures for our use in the book. To Mr. Lowrie, for solving our many tear-provoking problems, thank you! The faculty also deserve a big thanks for their patience in allowing us to interrupt class time to take pictures. ln the same instance I would like to thank Bob Abraham from Powell Studios for his loyal contributions of pic- tures for our book, as well as Roger Weber and Bruce I-Iannan, student photographers for the staff. Mrs. Hagemeyer, advisor to the staff, has spent long hours with us, providing the background for our yearbook. From myself and from the remainder of the annual staff, a most hearty thanks! Long hours spent in preparation and original ideas offered to the Aguila by Debbie Grolle, my assistant editor, will long be remembered by myself Qand Ihope our readersj as the originality of the 1969 Aguila. My greatest thanks to Deb! There are numerous others who deserve much credit for the production of our book. Among sthem are'Diane Brinker, the Business Manager, who solicited for ads and expertly handled our sales campaigng but the most heartfelt thanks is issued to you, the readers, the people who make this book a reality, To you, I extend my greatest words of appreciation. Many thanks! It is sincerely hoped you will enjoy the contents of this book. I would like to add that it has been a pleasure and a truly worthwhile experience serving in the editorship of the Aguila. My best wishes to those who fill the position in years to come. May you benefit from your duties as I have benefited from mine. Respectfully, 1 Janelle Schneider Editor-in-Chief l.9f3-9 Aguila W k fx L- u .r Bi?-- If - - - T ,, .
