EASTWOOD HIGH SCHOOL £ 9StW00(i '$Qi9ifQ pMsaot ffilltopper 35th ANNUAL OF EASTWOOD HIGH SCHOOL SYRACUSE, NEW YORK Dedication The class of 1959 is happy to dedicate this year's annual to Miss Jane Dickinson for her un- tiring energies as a teacher, advisor and friend. Because of her work, the Student Council and the American Field Service Program have be- come an important part of Eastwood High School. Through her activity she has set a fine example for the students to follow. Foreword We, the class of 1959, proudly present the Hilltoppcr, Eastwood High School’s 35th annual. We have chosen the “Golden Bears” as our theme because the “Golden Bears” have come to signify East wood High School in its many and diversified activities. The class of 1959 shall long remember Eastwood and the “Golden Alma Mater Where the hills of Onondaga Meet the eastern sky so blue And the gold of every sunrise Seems to cast its softest hue Place them over our Alma Mater To float on breezes bold Waving proudly over Eastwood High All hail the blue and gold. If we could but leave thee never Leave thy halls we know so well But our paths lead from thee ever So we let our voices swell And we'll rise and stand together And give a hearty cheer For Eastwood High, our Alma Mater That we hold so dear. When the shades of life are falling And clouds of dark there be Still to you ever calling Our praise shall be to thee And our thoughts are faithful ever As through a golden haze In all life's ways forgetting never Eastwood High School Days. 0k ROBERT W. November 17, 1958, President Bill Galvin called to order the 155 members o the C.lass ol 1959. Sheryl Gillmor held the office of Vice-President while Judy Jones took the minutes anil Bob Gentile handled financial matters. I he Senior Play was the first big asset to the Treasury. The main roles were capably handled by Elfie Labuda and Pat Pyrah (Alice), Carolyn Cardinale and Carol Dugan (Essie), Mary Jewell and Barb Bentz (Penny), Glenn Kray and Phil Schmidt (Tony), and Bill Snyder as Mr. Vanderhof. Mr. Allyn Philips was the very expert director. In May a record dance was held to which parents and students alike were invited. Under the leadership of Bill Snyder a Class Day was held June 3. Many eager students participated in the entertainment. In the main ballroom of Hotel Syra- cuse on June 5 the social activities of the “Class of 1959” came to a thrilling close. Many gay and starry-eyed couples danced merrily to the music of Jack Kreischer and his orchestra. Commencement ceremonies were held June 22. Thus endeil a year that will forever be a fond memory in the hearts of the “Class of 1959.” Senior Class Committee Senior Ball Committee Sponsor: Mrs. Bernice Wells Chairman: Judy Cleary Committee: Marion Jewell, Barbara Phillips, Mary Ann Marra, David Camardo, Gregory Bazluki, Paul Debes, Mary Ann Rao, Mary Jewell, Salvatore Madonna, Wil- liam Snyder, Priscilla Sutor. This was only one of the statements to come from this year's foreign student from Chatham, Kent, England — Susan Elizabeth Pike. On August 9, 1958, she was met by her American family, Mr. and Mrs. Marcy Bower, and their daughter, Marcia. In England Sue’s family consists of her parents, one sister and one brother. Sue has found time for many activities since school started in the fall: American Field Service Club, Delta Pi Alpha sorority, National Honor Society, Archery, Bowling, and Red Cross. She portrayed the Russian Countess in “You Can't Take It With You,” the Senior Play of 1959. Because of her quick sense of humor, she was voted “the Wittiest Girl in the Senior Class.” When Site returns to England, she has another year of school before she can enter college. She would like to either follow jour- nalism or teaching as a profession. Sue, it has been a real pleasure to have you at Eastwood High School this year. You have added a great deal to our Senior Year. We wish you success and happiness when you return to your homeland. To Our Friends On the following pages you will find the ad- vertisements of those business concerns whose kindness and cooperation have made possible the financial success of our E.H.S. yearbook. At this time we would like to express our sincere appre- ciation to the Solicitors, the Faculty, anti the Advisors for their time anil cooperation in aiding us in the production of our 1959 Hilltopper. If If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you; If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you. And make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about don't deal in lies. Or being hated don't give way to hating, And yet don’t look too good nor talk too wise, If you can dream — and not make dreams your master; If you can think — and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat these two imposters just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken. And stoop and build them up with worn-out tools; If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone. And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the will which says to them; “Hold on!” If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue. Or walk with kings — nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds' worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it, And — what is more — you'll be a Man, my son! Rudyard Kipling hes minding YOUR business YOUR HEART IS HIS BUSINESS. He s a research scientist—one of thousands supported by the Heart Fund. His life is dedicated to finding the unknown causes of the heart diseases, and new methods of treating and preventing them. He and your Heart Association have made your heart their business. YOUR HEART IS YOUR BUSINESS. Whatever your way of life, your future depends on your heart. Heart disease causes personal suffering and under- mines the happiness and economic welfare of the family. No one — no child or adult — is immune. THE HEART FUND IS EVERYBODY'S BUSINESS. When you support the Heart Fund, you help all hearts. You support heart research—and you make it possible for your Heart Association to bring the latest advances in heart research to you and your family through your doctor.
