Kari Margrethe Bakke, foreign exchange student came to Eastwood High School through the joint efforts of the Senior Stu- dent Council and the American Field Service Program in the fall of 1956. The American Field Service is a program that promotes international friendship by the granting of one year scholarships to European high school students. Kari, a pert, blue-eyed blonde with a spark- ling personality, is from a small town in Nor- way called Lillihammer. Her American sister, Diane, and the Knapp family welcomed her on August 19th, 1956. With the help of the family and new friends she adjusted quickly to a new way of life. Kari is very fond of school, and homework is in fact one of her hobbies. She is very inter- ested in music and she especially enjoys play- KAR1 MARGRETHE BAKKE ing the piano and church organ. While attend- ing Eastwood High, she became a very active member of the Senior Choir and Inner Choirs, Honor Society, Amitie, and also played the role of the Norwegian maid in the senior play “Junior Miss.” During football season she reigned as the “Queen” of Hi-Y Alpha’s annual “Kick-off Dance”. Kari’s talent in art also won her the first prize for her poster during “Clean Up Week,” sponsored by the Student Council. Kari applied for the A.F.S. scholarship in order to get a better knowledge of language, people, country and living conditions. She wanted to learn a bit more of what she had heard about, but had not seen. She told us about her own small, beautiful country and she says that upon returning home, it will be a pleasure for her to tell her family and friends about America.
