EASTWOOD HIGH SCHOOL Altna fllateA Where the hills of Onondaga Meet the eastern sky so blue And the gold of every sunrise Seems to cast its softest hue Place them over our Alma Mater To float on breezes bold Waving proudly over Eastwood High All hail the blue and gold. If we could but leave thee never Leave thy halls we know so well But our paths lead from thee ever So we let our voices swell And we’ll rise and stand together And give a hearty cheer For Eastwood High, our Alma Mater That we hold so dear. When the shades of life are falling And clouds of dark there be Still to you ever calling Our praise shall be to thee And our thoughts are faithful ever As through a golden haze In all life’s ways forgetting never Eastwood High School Days. foreword w. e the class of 1957, proudly present The Hill- topper, Eastwood High School’s 33rd annual. We have chosen medieval times as the theme for this yearbook. We hope that that era will symbolize the courage and strength of those who have traveled the road before us. We hope too that this will guide us in our preparation for the future. ROBERT W. OLIVER THE HILLTOPPER 33rd Annual of EASTWOOD HIGH SCHOOL Syracuse, New York We the Class of 1957, proudly dedicate the 33rd Annual to Mrs. Elizabeth Crannell for her untiring energies as teacher, advisor, and friend. During the years her work as a faithful teacher and advisor is an example of outstanding loyalty. It was mainly the editorial supervision of Mrs. Crannell that helped to make our school paper, “The Hi-Lites”, one of the best in the state. We shall always be indebted to Mrs. Crannell for her kindness, patience, and understanding— a lasting influence throughout the coming years. Mathematics Left to right: Helen L. Fer- ber, Mary A. Ambition—To be successful in everything, whether, college, career, or marriage. President John Gruninger called the 148 members of the Senior Class of 1957 to order for their first meeting on October 9th. Marylu Walters held the position of vice-president and the task of taking minutes was assigned to Paula Stewart. Treasurer Jim Quinn had a big time handling the funds, what with all the money the seniors gathered on December 15th and 16th, as a result of their play “Junior Miss”. Under the direction of Mr. Allyn Phillips the play was double casted with Christine Ragonese and Linda DeSocio sharing the lead role of “Judy”. Other parts in the play were portrayed by Leon Capone, Dave Hunt, Linda Daubenthaler, Gail Bennett, Lois Gurzny, Winnie Grove, Marylu Walters, Carolyn Angotti, Bill Williams, Bill Sabis, John Ezzo, John Lansing, Maureen Mancini, Gary Whitaker, Chuck Lang- paul, Dick Parzych, Dick Wescott, George Almasi, George Kernaghan, Larry Tone, and Kari Bakke. On April 5th, a great time was had by all the seniors who attended the dance “April Night” at the school gym. A1 Meltzer, celebrated disc jockey, provided record favorites for the unforgettable occasion. The big moment for most of the class came on the evening of May 29th, when, hand in hand, couples joyously entered the Main Ballroom of Hotel Onondaga to dance the gala evening away to the music of Dick Kowell’s orchestra. Diplomas were presented at the Commencement Exercises on June 24th. So was brought to a close one of the most memorable chapters in the lives of the Senior Class of 1957. RENALDA DeSANTIS Kari Margrethe Bakke, foreign exchange student came to Eastwood High School through the joint efforts of the Senior Stu- dent Council and the American Field Service Program in the fall of 1956. The American Field Service is a program that promotes international friendship by the granting of one year scholarships to European high school students. Kari, a pert, blue-eyed blonde with a spark- ling personality, is from a small town in Nor- way called Lillihammer. Her American sister, Diane, and the Knapp family welcomed her on August 19th, 1956. With the help of the family and new friends she adjusted quickly to a new way of life. Kari is very fond of school, and homework is in fact one of her hobbies. She is very inter- ested in music and she especially enjoys play- KAR1 MARGRETHE BAKKE ing the piano and church organ. While attend- ing Eastwood High, she became a very active member of the Senior Choir and Inner Choirs, Honor Society, Amitie, and also played the role of the Norwegian maid in the senior play “Junior Miss.” During football season she reigned as the “Queen” of Hi-Y Alpha’s annual “Kick-off Dance”. Kari’s talent in art also won her the first prize for her poster during “Clean Up Week,” sponsored by the Student Council. Kari applied for the A.F.S. scholarship in order to get a better knowledge of language, people, country and living conditions. She wanted to learn a bit more of what she had heard about, but had not seen. She told us about her own small, beautiful country and she says that upon returning home, it will be a pleasure for her to tell her family and friends about America. etali WM I, Susan Alexander, hereby will to Kennie M., tackle ability and red currants; to Mary Ann L.
