Are entl i i 31st ANNUAL EASTWOOD HIGH SCHOOL Syracuse, New York Dedication Wc, the Senior Class of 1955, proudly dedicate Eastwood High School’s 31st Annual to Charles F. Todd in deepest appreciation for his sincere guidance throughout his many years as principal. We appreciate his enthusiasm, his help to stu- dents along the road of learning, his friendship and trust. Of Mr. Todd’s untiring efforts on behalf of the boys and girls of the community it can be truly said that he has been one “To look up and not down, To look forward and not back, To look out and not in, and To lend a hand.” — Edw. Everett Hale Foreword Most people like to look to the future, but it can prove to be interesting also to look at the past occasion- ally, and to see the good that has passed on before us. Both to capture the dreams of the past and to dream in the present can relieve the tension created by world day situations. We shall therefore journey back a few years to the excitement of the twenties and try to revive happenings of things that we weren’t present to see; also to allow Principal Charles F. Todd to relive memories of those years when he first came to EHS. We, the class of 1955, have chosen for our theme “The Roaring Twenties” which will relate the past to the present through these pages. CHARLES F. TODD Principal JOHN V. In the Spring Concert, May 26th, the group offered “In the Still of the Night” by Cole Porter; “Manhattan” by Rodgers as a production number with soloists and costuming, and as the serious number, “Salvation Is Created” by Tschesnokoff. All members of the ninth grade whose auditions are approved are eligible for membership. The total membership this year has been 79. The Senior Choir presented the Christmas pro- gram with the Preliminary Choir and a small instrumental ensemble. Mrs. Dorothy Hettler, girls’ physical education director, with Mrs. Marion Kilpatrick of the Senior music department, planned the first half of the program “In a Toy Shop” with dances, drills and colorful settings. The second part included six choruses from “The Messiah” by Handel, sung by the combined choirs. There was a large and appreciative audience. The program was also given in Assembly. The Robed Choir sang the second portion of the program for the dinner for the Golden Agers of the Salvation Army at the Mizpah. Members of the Voice Class presented the double solo from “The Messiah” at the December recital of the Music Teachers’ Association in Clark Hall. Francine Maley and Charlotte Matteson were soloists. Madeleine Sears accompanied. Martha Pckurney and Linda Conti sang solos at a later recital at the Museum, as did Charlotte Mat- teson, William Hume, Anita Norey, Paul Mc- Graw and Darlene Halladay. The Spring Concert, a program of light num- bers, was given May 26. The Choirs and voice classes combined for this and a few of the numbers were given production treatment. After that they dropped their remaining three games to Nottingham, Christian Brothers Academy, and Central. The Bears completed the season in fourth place. Playing a non-league game at Fulton, Oc- tober 9, the Bears defeated the gridmen of Fulton by a score of 27-19. MERTON O’HARE Although Eastwood High’s basketeers wound up the ’54-’55 campaign with 2 wins and 12 losses, the record did not show the close games the Bears lost. Victory in half of these games would have made the team a top contender. Lack of a capable fifth man of the season hurt the squad considerably. Their scoring punch was divided between Charles “juju” Tarnacki, David Carroll, Herbert “Buddy” Meyers and Fred Lupone. Tarnacki was a first team All-City choice, while Meyers and Carroll received honorable positions on the mythical All Star Team. CROSS- COUNTRY 1954 Coach MR. PATRICK HUGHES First Row (1-r) J. Roberts, D. Cerio, E. H effer on. Second row (l-r) D. Ianuzi, J. Cooper, T. Fredette, S. Paris. 'I'he harriers of Eastwood showed much im- provement in the 1954 season. Competing in six meets, they showed well. Having won a dual meet over North Syracuse, they competed in a triangular meet which included Nottingham, North Syracuse and Eastwood which they also won. Running in New York in the N. Y. U., they placed 16th out of 43 other schools, placed 7th out of 18 schools at Baldwinsville, placed 7th out of 25 schools entered in the Proctor Invitational, and placed 4th in the section 3 meet. Although the baseball team showed a poor record with 3 wins, 10 losses and one postponed game because of rain, the team showed vast im- provement in the second half of league competition. With only two veterans returning from last year’s squad in Dick Liquori and Bob “Yoggi” Zink, Coach John Zabadal did a fine job in rebuilding the team. Mound duties were shared by Dick Liquori and Ed Liquori. The only wins of the season were over Valley 5-4; Smith Tech 14-9; and North 3-2. With almost a dozen men return- ing, the Bears hope to show a fine season in 1955. GOLF 1954 Coach MERTON “MID” O’HARE Eastwood High School Golf Team had rather a fine season. Before city league competition was under way, the linksmen played and defeated Fay- etteville-Manlius in a non-league game. Playing a total of eight league games, they broke even, win- ning four and losing four. The team finished in third place. Members of the squad were: Patrick Podsaid, Leonard Lasnicki, Stanley Banazek and Edward Zawadski. TRACK 1954 Coach MR. PATRICK HUGHES Although Eastwood and Nottingham were the only city harriers, Eastwood was considered City Champ. The team was led by Captains Sam Paris and Don Ianuzzi, who were capably assisted by John Roberts, Don Serio and Eugene Heffron. (main team.) First Row (1-r) C. Hunt, R. Powers, D. Ccrio, J. Talmage.
