% EASTWOOD H ] [GH SCHOOL 30th Annual of EASTWOOD HIGH SCHOOL Syracuse, New York DEDICATION We, the senior class, proudly and gratefully dedicate the 1954 yearbook to Mr. Edgar Klett, whose spirit of fair play has been a hall- mark to all of us in our years at Eastwood. His enthusiastic approach to new ideas and school activities will, in the years to come, be a constant, vital inspiration in the full develop- ment of our individual potentialities. I T I T I T I I I 1 I 1 1 I ' Many times in this world of tension we think that the only way to find solutions to our problems is to escape into a world of fantasy where dreams seem to become realities, though we realize that dreams cannot be substituted for the full meaning of life. Facing the world today requires knowledge, which is power: self-discipline, which is character: tolerance, which is spiritual wisdom; and, last but not least, imagination — our passport to the future. The class of 1954 has chosen for its theme fairy tales, which delve into the imaginative and remind us that in this world of increasing anxiety, we must have dreams in order to achieve. A group exemplary of the fact that teenagers today can have fun without the use of alcoholic beverages is the Allied Youth group of Eastwood High School. This year the Eastwood Post sponsored two school dances, including Texas Carnival.” two summer dances, a spaghetti supper, four paper drives, two rummage sales, three bake sales, and held monthly parties. In addition, they took part in the Inter-Post Talent Show at Central High School, sent representatives to the national convention at Buck Hill Falls, Pa., and recently completed a highly successful drive for new members. The school also had assembly speakers who spoke on behalf of Allied Youth. FOOTBALL ’53 With only three men returning from the ’52 starting eleven, Coach Mid O'Hare did a fine job rebuilding a team which ended the season with a 3-2-1 record. Veterans Frank Marra. Marshall Williamson, and Harold Icky Hef- fron gave much needed experience to the rest of the team. Along with these three, Bob Galvin, Bob Zink, John Doyle, Leon Frenchy Grosso. Dan Kres- ser. Gil Hough, Don Hammond, and George Confer saw plenty of action. The Bears opened the season being defeated by Valley 14-12, but re- bounded by tieing Nottingham 7-7, and then smothering North 19-0. The Bears rounded out the season by dropping a close one to Vestal. 19-12, in a non-league affair, and by being stopped by C.B.A.'s champions 34-0. These two losses were offset by victories over a strong Vocational eleven, 6-0, and Central, 14-0. The fiery spirit and steadfast courage of the boys from the Nichols Ave. institute earned them the respect of every team that faced them. BASKETBALL ’53 -’54 With Harold Icky Heffron as captain, and Bill Lang, Chuck Ju-Ju” Tarnacki. Matty Pedzick. and Bob Galvin making up the first team. Eastwood’s basketball team shone brightly this year. The record was 7 won and 11 lost. While the Bears won all their games in a decisive manner, they dropped three by one point, one by two points, one by three points, and two by five points. One of the games lost by one point was the semi-final playoff with Central High, the score being 44-43. When the end of the season arrived, the Bears were tied for fourth spot in the league standings with Vocational. In the playoff game, Eastwood came out on top. 61-54. This quali- fied our boys for the playoffs. It was here they lost the heartbreaker to Central. Bob Galvin. Bill Lang, and Ju-Ju Tarnacki collected 524 points among them to lead the scoring for the team. Bob Galvin led the trio with 183 points with Bill Lang coming next with 178 points and Ju-Ju Tarnacki a close third with 163 points. To these three, along with the rest of the squad, we say thanks— thanks for a wonderful team! Roland Berry. Charles Burke. Dominick Galuzzo. Peter Laneve. Louie Larusso. Larry Lay, Philip Lindstrom. Edward Liquori, Richard Liquori. John Manterio. Earl Miller. Kenneth Morrison. Larry Parker, James Parker. Frank Rego. August Simonetta. Joseph Simonetta. Carl Spagnola. A1 Tupper, George Valenti. Bruce Wallace. Bob Zink. BASEBALL Coach MR. JOHN ZABADOL Eastwood’s record shows three wins and eleven losses. Of the eleven games the Bears dropped, four of them were by one-run deci- sions which might have gone either way. Two victories were registered over Central (9-3, 5-3) and one over Smith Tech (14-2). Close decisions were lost to Vocational. Smith Tech and Nottingham. Bob Zink, Augie Simonetta. and A1 Tupper provided much of the power for our fighting teams, while the pitching assignments fell on the shoulders of Charlie Burke and Dick Liquori. TRACK ’53 The harriers from E. H. S. took part in five meets and did well in all of them. Coach Pat Hughes got his boys in shape early for such important meets as the Onondaga County Relays, the City Meet, the Section 3 Meet at Utica, and meets with Central and East Syracuse High Schools. Captain Clyde Hunt, Don Ianuzzi, and Norman Haas provided a lot of speed for the team and were capably assisted by Sam Paris, Nick Kopp. Ted Eliott, Charles Roehrig, Jim De Furia. John Lansing, Larry Tone. Bob Machell. Kieth Morrison, John Tal- madge, John Roberts, Harvey Olen, Bob Powers, and Nelson Seeley. CROSS COUNTRY Members of the team include Clyde Hunt, Captain: Don Cerio. Mike Costello. Don Ianuzzi, Sam Paris, John Roberts, John Talmadge, and Bill Williams. The long distance runners of E. H. S. upheld Eastwood’s record of having excellent squads. This year the boys won the Quadrangular Meet at Nottingham High School and the Onondaga Central Invitation Meet; came in second at the North Syracuse Invitation Meet; placed third at the Section Three Meet; fourth at Baldwins- ville Invitation Meet, and came in eleventh at the N. Y. U. Meet in New York City. At the N. Y. U. Meet there were teams from all over the country competing, yet our team managed to out distance many of them. The E. H. S. golfers had an excellent season in '53. Archie Banazeck, Ed Hannon, Ned Hildreth, Jim Ineich, and Dave Romeo were the mainstays of the team. The boys gained a lot of expeience which will help them a great deal in '54. GOLF - 1953 Members: Jane Cocco, Helen Graham, Gerry Salvatore. MAJORETTES Adviser MR. JOHN WILKIE Head Majorette NANCY KEEFER Assistant Majorette JEANNE HEBERT Strutting down the field in their stylish new uniforms, the majorettes opened the football season with some very snappy rou- tines. Adding to the attraction, all the majorettes performed a very unusual fire baton routine at the C.B.A. game. This year our majorettes also added a gay note to two assemblies with their fast moving twirls. They performed for Jamesville High School, and Eastwood's own instrumental concert. Their downtown appear- ances included Armistice Day and Memorial Day Parades. SENIOR HIGH SWIMMING Adviser MRS. LOOK!! at the following pages! There you will discover a key to the financial suc- cess of the 1954 Annual—the interest of those fin- ancial concerns that purchased advertising space. In addition, we should like to thank the solicitors, the faculty, and the advisers who have so willingly given of their time in order that we might produce a worthwhile yearbook. A special note of thanks, too. to John O'Connor, whose work preparing posters for our advertising campaign contributed greatly to our sales promotion.
