By participating in the pageants, I have learned a great deal bout poise, self-confidence and working with other people. It's a lot of work, but it's also fun. It's an experience that all of the girls benefit from. You meet new friends and have memories that will last a lifetime. I'd encourage any girl to participate. Laura Riggs Top β Laura Riggs was named Second Runner-Up in the Miss DeKalb County pageant, and Beth Washier was crowned Miss DeKalb County. Right β Laura sang a song by Amy Grant for the talent portion of the competition. g m Student Life The experience and memories 1 gained from being in the pageant are ones that will stay with me for a lifetime and I encourage any girl who is thinking of going out to do it. I cannot even begin to describe the feelings I had when the Master of Ceremonies called my name as Miss DeKalb County Fair 1987. I felt relief and happiness all at once. I feel that it was the inspiration and support of all my friends that helped me the most. I was very proud to be representing Eastside High School that night. Thank you to all my friends who were there supporting me that night. You truly made it the best night of my life. When I look back to the school year 87-88, it brings me lots of good memories. I arrived to Ft. Wayne July 30th. First thing in my mind was to go to bed and get some sleep, after two hard days in Mew York. When I stepped out of airport building, heat and humidity hit me hard, but later on I learned that it was nothing comparing with drought 88. My first host family was Bakers. With them I saw each one Eastside's football games; from Blazer Preview to Jimtown. I myself want to play, but it was too late when season was already going. Instead of playing football, I took part of school play and memorized some unforgettable lines such as I understand you have room to rent. December I changed for my second host family, family that I had been warned before (in a positive meaning) the Carpenters. While staying with Carpenters, I was manager for Varsity basket- ball team. I learned to kick start washing machine. Life went on, and I changed for my last host family; Sechlers. Also track season started and I ran track. Highlight of my school year was marine biology class trip to Florida. Even I missed the prom that everybody had been talking about, since Christmas I think the trip to Florida was best part of the school year. Finally came Graduation, (damet, missed Indy 500 because of it) and surprise! I got big cake and many presents. Thanks! I thank all my friends and teachers, they had lots of patience and good sense of humor when being with me. Special thanks for my host families and host brothers, their part was most important for me during this year. Hope I will see every one of you again. Β β Student Life A GREAT YEAR Hi! I am Eldita Justiniano from Santa Cruz, Bolivia. I arrived to Butler, Indiana the 24th of August, 1987. It has been the most exciting year of my life! Full of wonderful memories and great unforgettable experiences! My first family. Bakers, helped me a great deal since I had a lot of trouble with the language. Jerry and Carrie introduced me to a lot of people and helped me in everything that I didn't understand. Carrie also introduced me to the volleyball team and I had the opportunity to be part of it. During that time I also enjoyed going to the Cross Country meeting and cheering for Eastside. I was very impressed with the Blazer spirit at all the football games. Even that at the beginning I almost didn't understand the game. I enjoyed meeting my friends or just yelling: GO BIG GREEN!! After Thanksgiving Day I moved to my second host family, the Smiths. Leaving the Bakers was very hard for me. I learned so much with them and I loved them even morel While staying with the Smiths I also learned a lot and experimented new and exciting experiences like going to cross country skiing. I'd never seen snow before in my life! I wasn't involved in any winter sport but I enjoyed going to the basketball games where I could see again the incredible spirit of Eastside basketball fans. When winter was over it was time to move to my third host family, Sanders. Like the first time, it was hard to move but 1 realized all the fun and experiences I was going to have with such a nice family! Julie, my host sister encouraged me to try for the spring musical The Wizard of Oz. I played Mombie, a wicked witch. I met so many people and got closer with my friends. During spring I also played on the softball team in which I had a lot of fun. It also was a new experience. Something that I loved and enjoyed doing was to help the Spanish students in their language skills. The other exchange students, Anneli and Jussi, were great friends and helped to make my exchange year more enjoyable. At the end I want to say that I loved the American way of life, the people, the food (chocolate chip cookies. Pizza Hut, etc.) and the sports. Thanks to everyone who gave me their treasured friendship. (Thanks Julie M. and Mark C.l!) Thanks everyone at Eastside, the faculty members and students, and all the community. Thanks to the Rotary Club of Butler for all their support and help. And a very special thanks to my three host families for all the love, care, help, support, patience, and dedication they gave me. I will love them forever in a special place in my heart! Love, Eldita Student Life Hi, I'm one of the three exchange students who went to Eastside High School during 1987-88. My name is Anneli Morling and I'm from a suburb outside Stockholm, the capital of Sweden. A couple of days after my arrival I went with Tara to her volleyball practice. It seemed to be a lot of fun, so the next day I joined the team. They placed me in Varsity and Miss Getts became my coach. Thanks to volleyball I met my first new friends, who meant a lot to me. I had a lot of fun with the volleyball team and I'm really glad I got involved so soon after my arrival, it helped me a lot. School started. In the beginning it was hard to understand everything the teacher and friends said, so most of the time 1 sat quiet. But already after a few months it was much easier to understand and I started to talk more. The school days were very different from the ones I was used to in Sweden. We don't have the same schedule every day. Our periods were just 40 minutes and there was were 10 minute breaks between the periods. We also had one hour for lunch, so we had time to go out to eat, and maybe go shopping for a while. The winter came and volleyball ended. The winter was long and cold, it seemed like it would never end. But at last the spring was here, it started to become warmer outside and everyone seemed to be happier. I became the manager for the Girls Varsity Track, which was a lot of fun. During the spring I was also involved in the spring musical The Wizard of Oz.β I was one of the spirits, and also helped with the make up. I really had a good time. After the musical was over, I went with the school to Washington D.C. for a few days. Our schedule was packed with things we were going to see. The Washington D.C. trip is really one of the things I'm going to remember forever. The school year has gone very fast, and Graduation is now only a week ahead of me. And that makes me realize that my exchange year is almost over. It has been very exciting, interesting, and I have learned a lot, more than I ever hoped to do. I want to thank all my teachers for the help and support they gave me during the year and the school administration for flying the Swedish flag during the year. I have really appreciated every- thing. And a special thanks to my family Deb r Greg Whitlock and Tawnya Tara Patterson for making my exchange year possible. I'm going to miss you all. This meant there were eight varsity openings the girls worked for at the beginning of our season. Due to this inexperience, we had a lot of ups and downs throughout the season. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my advisor, Mrs. Moughler. At the beginning of the school year, she had the responsibility of the yearbook literally dumped into her lap. She's done a super job and has been really great to work with. Next, I would like to thank Patty Creager. Good luck with next year's production. Lastly, I would like to thank all of the coaches, spon- sors and administrators for their help. 1 would also like to thank my fellow classmates for giving me memories that will stay with me for a lifetime.
