This new decade started off right with these fads and fash- ions. Downfilled vests, Levi’s, hik- ing boots and cowboy hats were all part of EHS. Along with these physical changes, the adminis- tration was changed. The stu- dents grew accustomed to the different ways of the new princi- pal, Mrs. Peggy Cowen and as- sistant principal, Mr. Rex Bo- linger. Mrs. Cowen made many changes during the year, one of which was to install a Lance can- dy machine for the students’ use. Ping-pong tables and chess and checker boards were installed in the lunch room for more enjoy- ment. So come with us through the pages of this yearbook and see how EHS began the new decade! The story revolves around Elwood P. Dowd and his very special friend, Harvey. Har- vey is a six-foot rabbit. Veta Sim- mons and Myrtle Mae Simmons, Elwood’s sister and niece, try to get Elwood committed to an in- sane asylum called “Chumley's Rest” managed by two doctors, Dr. Sanderson and Dr. Chumley. Veta succeeds and gets Elwood to agree to take a shot so he won't see Harvey anymore. For- tunately, E.J. Lofgen saves the day and convinces Veta to stop the injection. Elwood admires his most prized possession. Judge Gaffney and the doctors have a heated argument. CREDITS Director .......................Phoebe E. The girls finished with a record of 2-16. Their two wins came against a tough Angola team and arch-rival DeKalb. The Lady Blazers were led in both games by tough serving. In the Angola game Kathy Ray set the pace by serving fifteen straight points. In the DeKalb game, Kandy Kaser showed why she was voted MVP of the team by powerful serv- ing and fantastic defensive play. In the ACAC Tourney the Lady Blazers played one of the most exciting games of the tourney. The girls played Southern Wells and showed great improvement from the first time they played them. COMPLIMENTS OF READY EQUIP SALES 31 I GRAPPLERS END SEASON The Eastside grapplers completed a fine season with an 8-3-1 record. The season contained several high points for the Blazers. The eight victories represented a single season high for the wrestling program. For the second consecutive year Eastside captured the Central Noble Wres- tling Invitational. The Blazers placed third this year in the ACAC and took fourth in the Tourney. In losing three matches this season, Eastside gave conference-power Carroll all they wanted in losing, 39-20, and dropped a spine-tingling 35-31 afternoon convocation at Garrett. Some outstanding individual performances were turned in this season. Brad Kaiser won the sectional championship at 119 pounds. Chris Wood, Jacob Young, Mike Damron and Eugene Evans, along with Brad Kaiser, all advanced to the regionals at Ft. Wayne. Chris Wood placed fourth at the regional level winning his match in the opening round. Seniors Chris Wood, Jacob Young and Lee Blaine will be sorely missed next year. The Varsity received the spirit stick and the “Excellence Award”, while the Reserves were chosen for the “Sparkle Award”. The Varsity cheerleaders re- ceived first place at a one-day clinic in November and the Reserves won first place in a contest at the Hicksville County Fair. At Homecoming, the cheerleaders released 300 green, gold and white balloons at the kick-off of the EHS-Hamil- ton game. During basketball season, they sold spirit-chain links to help boost the Blazers. The cheerleaders also sponsored a one-day clinic during this season, which attracted 150 cheerleaders from Northern Indiana. This clinic was won by Garrett. An interview was conducted with Mr. Rob Pfiester and he said that he looks for three things when pick- ing a Varsity Singer. Talent, sight reading, and then an audition was how all 24 members were elected. The Varsity Singers were very busy this year. They sold candles, held many discos and sang in several contests. They also entertained local people by singing at the Big Run Church, DeKalb Soil Conservation Club, Butler Chamber of Commerce, Wawasee Lakeside Chapel, and the Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Edgerton. Hoosier Boys’ State is an American Legion spon- sored activity held each year around the week of June 9-16. While at Hoosier Boy’s State, you partici- pate in learning the practical politics and the govern- mental functions of the cities, state and federal levels of this country. Special speakers are scheduled throughout the week. Special classes such as speech, legislation, and law enforcement are also arranged for the delegates. Representatives from the Indiana State Police Department and the U.S. Militar- ies are also on hand. It is an honor to attend Hoosier Boys' State and to be able to better understand our government, both local and state. During the week of June 17-24, Julie Armstrong attended Hoosier Girls’ State. That week was a very unforgettable one for Julie. She studied the basic structure of the Indiana state government and the process of elections. She made a lot of new friends and the lesson she learned was that no one can survive in this world without friends. 59 THE SHOW DRAMA: Front Row — Miss Humbles, Cathy Simmons, Aleta Brown, Julie Armstrong. I want to thank you all for making my stay here in the United States the best year of my short, but intensive life. When I first came here, everything was new and different compared to my Sweden. The school sys- tem was different, the language, the way of thinking and the rules. Every day I got to know people and make friends. I think that some of you guys are going to be my very dearest friends for the rest of my life, and I promise to come back some day and visit Butler, St. Joe, Spencerville and maybe even New- ville. My year has been a lot of fun. Events like the Washington trip, prom, graduation, Florida trip and “The Hole top the list. I have learned a lot about people, life, and myself. I have changed totally as a person, I hope it is to the better. My way of valuing things is different. Now I understand to appreciate people and feelings and accept differences between individuals and countries. Finally, I just want to thank you one more time and tell you that I think you are great and the U.S. is a country to be proud of. I hope that I haven’t disap- pointed you too much and I hope you will treat your next student just as great as you did to me, and to you who are thinking about applying for a year in another country, I just want to say, do it! You will have a lot of fun and you are going to find yourself. Keep in touch! Ronda Doll and Vivian Ortiz were sponsored by the Spanish Club as they visited Mexico in the summer months. Dear Eastside Students: By the time you read this letter the Bolivian ex- change student will be very far from Eastside. I want you to know how good I felt during the school year. It was more fun and friendship than I expected. I've never thought that I would have such a great exper- ience at school. Everybody is just great. Teachers are more friends than teachers. One of them who really helped me was Mr. Wagner, thanks Mr. Wagner, and thanks all the teachers. To all the students, I don’t have words to say thank you for being good friends and for making my exper- ience wonderful. The only thing left to say is take care and “Go Big Green . That's using your nose! IN MEMORIUM . . . With Frank around We always had fun He brought happiness and laughter to everyone. Without him Some things won’t be the same Because he had so many friends And a lot of fame. We will never forget and always reminisce All the good times we've had That we'll always miss. So many cried when he passed away As it is always some day But why this way? A lot admired him Oh, so well And they cried so much You could tell God only knows what was on his mind But like Lisa says he’ll always be mine. We won’t forget him from this day on end, God Bless Him. For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that who- ever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.—John 3:16. I came that they might have life, and might have it abundantly. —John 10:10. LAW TWO: Man is SINFUL and SEPARATED from God. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. —Homans 3:23. Back Row: Donna Kray — Photographer, Lori Keltner — Photographer, Sherri Brown — Bus. Mgr., Babbie Herschberger — Photographer. This is the serious side of the yearbook staff of 1980. The deadlines, the captions, the copy and the selling of ads and yearbooks were all part of the sleepless (?) nights a few of the members experienced. The top picture is of the entire staff and the side picture is dedicated to those people who put forth a little extra effort to get this book put together. Thanks also to Mr. Penix for all of his cooperation. In past years the copy has given thanks to every- body, (and I mean EVERYBODY) who has even set foot in that little room at the end of the voca- tional building. This year I’ve decided to be differ- ent. Those that worked very hard: Sherri, Teresa, Pam, Donna, Lori, Babbie, Joel, Mrs. Hood, and me, have gotten a personal satisfaction out of having put together a book that future generations will look at and say, “This is one terrific book!” This is our thanks, but I, personally, would like to thank each and every one of you hard workers. The next page is my dedication to all of those crazy days spent in third period. 135 THIS IS IT! This is the third period that most of the yearbook staff remembers, including Mrs. Hood. Many times she would enter the room when we should have all been working; in- stead we were having what looked like a party, every day. I think Sut- ton’s market got the best deal out of it by getting the business we drummed up by purchasing our “munchies” at that store. All in all, the year has been very successful, a lot of fun, and I hope the tradition continues next year. Don’t forget about the work that has to be done, and Mrs. Hood will make it through another year. Good luck! Coleen Van Zile — editor The munchies crowd. 136
