Several convocations were held throughout the year. EHS had the pleasure of hearing Senator Richard Lugar's views on several issues. After a short speaking session, the floor was opened to any questions that the student body might have. Students were most co- operative and had some worthwhile questions. We also had the pleasure of being entertained by several musical performers. One, in particular, who sang about mystery meat and another who was performing at the Mousehole during the DeKalb County fair. On field day, a Christian rock group came and entertained us before the competition began. They returned that evening for an additional concert. Tuula Sinikka Mikkonen was Eastside's exchange student to the United States from Heinola, Finland. She was sponsored by the Butler Rotary Club and was here for one year. After two months of living here this article, written by Tuula, was published in the school paper. EHS Students, Two months ago when I was leaving home in Finland I noticed again how strange a man can be to leave home, old good friends, and Mom's meatballs voluntarily. Seriously, I was a bit hesitant and confused. Switching the home country can be a big surprise. I didn't know anything about the town of Butler, rather this state, or this country, anything! On the other hand, it was exciting, too. Now I've found I really didn't know too much about your way of living. After passing two months in Eastside Super High School, I've got some comprehension of your schooling. The first thing that comes to my mind is a great number of subjects you can choose. Like animal care, interpersonal relations, and photography are something new to me. I appreciate a lot of the working practice that can be done, too, for example in the library or administration building. It will give a foretaste of what working is like. The understanding between teachers and students seems to be really friendly. You can just make jokes with teachers. I think getting well on together with teachers and students is the key to the pleasant studying. The activities seem to have a great role. Nearly everybody belongs to some sport club or some other club. It's great! In Finish schools, because of many subjects, we don't have a chance to spend time on sports in so big a way. Graduation is different too. You graduate a year earlier than we do, we have to take exams before graduation. When it comes to food, I couldn't believe I'd survive without brack break, but I seem to be in good health. I've even gained. Junk food is the best food, isn't it? Do you know what, Guys? I am really lucky. I am really lucky to be here with you. Yours, Tuula Mikkonen 26 Exchange Student
