1979 EASTERNER EASTSIDE HIGH SCHOOL BUTLER, INDIANA VOLUME 16 It happened in '78-79. All the things that made this school year unique. Remember the toga craze and our own Mike Tiny Kies sling in his toga?? How about frogman, Dave Blair?? Then came Tuula, our exchange student, the Halloween dress up, Tammey Hicov as a Blood Drop, the Senior prank, and finally Graduation. Yes, all of these unique things are what made this year The Last of the '70s. 2 Table Of Contents Activities 5 People 35 Faculty 65 Athletics 77 Organizations 99 Advertising 122 Girls'-Boys' State From June 10 through June 25, the campus of Indiana State University at Terre Haute, became the home for close to 2,000 high school students interested in government. The session of Hoosier Boys' State was held during the week of June 10-17. Kenny Ray and Mark Haberkorn were delegates from Eastside. Boys' State is designed by the American Legion to give the young people of Indiana a chance to learn the aspects of state and local government, and to discover a sense of pride and loyalty toward America. While learning about government, those who attended Boys' State learned the value of good citizenship, and formed lasting friendships with their peers. Hoosier Girls' State was in session from June 18-25. Miriam Graham represented Eastside. Arriving in Terre Haute on June 18, amid over 800 other girls from around the state, was just the start of a fun-filled, action-packed week for Miriam. Girls' State is set up by the American Legion Auxiliary, and follows a program similar to that of Boys' State. Good citizenship, involvement in government and national pride was stressed during the week. Flag Donation 7 Seven Compete For Title Of “Miss Eastside Tina Carnahan plays ' 'Valse in F flat''. There were seven contestants in this year's Miss Eastside contest which was held on Wednesday, September 13. The first to display her talent was Carma Bremer, singing The Way We Were. Tina Carnahan then proceeded to play a selection on the piano called Valse in E flat.'' The next contestant was Kim Kessler singing, I Won't Last A Day Without You. Kim Powell moved the audience with her version of the song, I Don't Know How to Love Him. Monica Snyder twirled baton to Aquarius, impressing the audience with her expertise in twirling. Tammy Warstler chose to sing, I Honestly Love You as her talent in the competition. Susan Yates rounded up the contest by singing, A Time for Us. All the girls put forth a fine effort, and it was really up for grabs as to whom the lucky winner would be. It was a difficult decision for the judges to make with all of the excellent performances, but in the final outcome Monica Snyder was chosen as Miss Eastside with Kim Kessler as alternate. Both girls advance to represent Eastside in the DeKalb County Pageant. 8 Miss Eastside Many Students Involved In County Fair Eastside students were very involved in the DeKalb County Free Fall Fair this year, receiving top honors in many areas. Monica Snyder and Kim Kessler represented Eastside in the Miss DeKalb County Pageant. Kim was chosen as Miss Congeniality and Monica was honored as first runner- up. Senior Joy Zeigler, last year's queen, performed also saying a special goodby through her dummy, to her duties as Miss DeKalb County. Many Eastside students participated in the 4-H activities held throughout the week. Honors went to: Steve Lechleidner, senior beef showmanship; David Surface, junior swine showmanship; Sheila Haley, reserve grand champion rabbit; Mark Koeppe, champion grade Holstein; Len Moughler, reserve champion Guernsey; Danny Martin, junior sheep showmanship; Jeff Leeper, champion ewe; and Mark Johnson, champion pen of two market lambs. Eastside band members also participated, marching in the opening parade on Monday night and in the Miss DeKalb County Pageant parade. The band placed first in its class in the Grand Finale Parade on Saturday. All participants in the DeKalb County Fair deserve congratulations and thanks for making the fair a time of victory for Eastside. County Fair 9 At first, it seemed like any typical Monday morning in October at Eastside. But taking a closer look at the students, it was noticed that they had their clothes on backwards I Were they starting a new fashion trend? Actually, it was just the first day of Spirit Week, in honor of Homecoming. The rest of the week, students showed their spirit by dressing down, wearing green and white, dressing up, and as the conclusion of the week, Grease Day. On Thursday and Friday, The Challenge of the Classes was held. The over- all winners were the sophomores. A Spirit Bonfire and Snake Dance was held Thursday evening. Spirit Week was aptly named because everyone was full of spirit and school pride during Homecoming Week. In this case, it was Brian Powell, star of The Perfect Idiot. Under the direction of Melanie F. Myers, the Drama Department presented The Perfect Idiot November 10- 11. Brian Powell excelled in the role of the boy wonder, Dan Tennyson. Dan had all the brains, but no friends. His parents wouldn't let him take his college entrance exams until he proved himself popular at school. While Dan was stewing about his messed-up life, his sassy sister, Jackie (Tracy McKown) was trying to convince her friends (Susan Daniel Tennyson ........... Jackie Tennyson ........... Puff had been suspended from all sports until he could pass his exams. Dan made an interesting deal with Jackie's friends. This led to some madcap adventures as Dan perfected his hypnotic tutoring device: Puff slowly became a scholar, Mr. Latherby (Tim Rubalcaba), the respected businessman, accidentally became hypnotized and thought he was a rabbit, and Dan and Linda Barnard (Susan Yates) fell in love. .........Brian Powell .....Tracy McKown ............Wes Cook .........Aleta Brown ..........Joy Zeigler .....Tim Rubalcaba .........Susan Yates .........John Dwyer ..........Tom Morr Margaret McCollough .....Julie Armstrong ...........Chris Holt ...........Ronda Doll .....Cathy Simmons .........Keith Strong ... .Tammy Gettinger Brian showing his intelligence. Fall Play 13 Moods Through Song Choir Concert 15 In this musical, the action centers around Dorothy, a farm girl from Kansas, whose house (with her in it) gets carried away by a tornado to a beautiful land over the rainbow that's full of very different people, witches, and a wizard. The plot thickens as Dorothy meets a scarecrow without a brain, a tinman without a heart, and a lion who lacks courage. Together they make their way to the Land of Oz in hopes that the great wizard can give her companions what they lack and provide Dorothy with a way back home to Kansas. What follows teaches the scarecrow, tinman, and lion that they already had their brain, heart, and courage, and Dorothy learns that there's really no place like home. EHS had the pleasure of hearing Senator Richard Lugar's views on several issues. After a short speaking session, the floor was opened to any questions that the student body might have. Students were most co- operative and had some worthwhile questions. We also had the pleasure of being entertained by several musical performers. One, in particular, who sang about mystery meat and another who was performing at the Mousehole during the DeKalb County fair. On field day, a Christian rock group came and entertained us before the competition began. They returned that evening for an additional concert. She was sponsored by the Butler Rotary Club and was here for one year. After two months of living here this article, written by Tuula, was published in the school paper. EHS Students, Two months ago when I was leaving home in Finland I noticed again how strange a man can be to leave home, old good friends, and Mom's meatballs voluntarily. Seriously, I was a bit hesitant and confused. Switching the home country can be a big surprise. I didn't know anything about the town of Butler, rather this state, or this country, anything! On the other hand, it was exciting, too. Now I've found I really didn't know too much about your way of living. After passing two months in Eastside Super High School, I've got some comprehension of your schooling. The first thing that comes to my mind is a great number of subjects you can choose. Like animal care, interpersonal relations, and photography are something new to me. I appreciate a lot of the working practice that can be done, too, for example in the library or administration building. It will give a foretaste of what working is like. The understanding between teachers and students seems to be really friendly. You can just make jokes with teachers. I think getting well on together with teachers and students is the key to the pleasant studying. The activities seem to have a great role. Nearly everybody belongs to some sport club or some other club. It's great! In Finish schools, because of many subjects, we don't have a chance to spend time on sports in so big a way. Graduation is different too. You graduate a year earlier than we do, we have to take exams before graduation. When it comes to food, I couldn't believe I'd survive without brack break, but I seem to be in good health. I've even gained. Junk food is the best food, isn't it? Do you know what, Guys? I am really lucky. I am really lucky to be here with you. Highlighting regular season play was the Blazers' superb victory over Carroll at the end of the season. Despite losing the first game 11-9 after eight minutes of playing time had run out, the Green and White came back to hold off a Carroll rally 12-10 in the second game and 12-7 in the decisive third contest with the clock running out both times. With high hopes, the 13-3 Lady Blazers entered the ACAC tournament heavily favored to win. The team did well on opening night, defeating both Heritage and Southern Wells to advance to the semi-finals. There the Lady Blazers were downed by Carroll's consistent play. Despite this disappointment, the girls looked to sectional to redeem themselves. However, their hopes were again dashed as they lost in the first round to DeKalb's fired-up Barons. The team loses six super senior players this year. Mary Jo Baughman, Amy Hampel, Lisa Johnson, Sunda Obendorf, Cheri Schmucker, and Terry Stine worked hard together to bring pride to Eastside during their seasons on the court. Those wno remain behind will miss their skill and enthusiasm and wish them luck wherever the future finds them. BOTTOM: Amy Hampel, Sunda Obendorf, Mary Jo Baughman. To start the year off they served as hosts, along with the student council, for the Parent Night at EHS. As another service project, they were the nucleus of a new group called the Sports Officials Club, which took care of all the athletic events. They went Christmas carroling to some of the nursing homes around Butler and had a great time. To finish out the year, they held their annual banquet at the Patchwork Quilt , a restaurant near Middlebury, Indiana. After an enjoyable and filling meal, the prophecy was read. This concluded the evening as well as the year for the NHS. 114 NHS . . . Continuing To Lead And Serve Carol, Dee Ann, and Sheryl busy typing. Business students of the USA have their very own professional career organization — the OFFICE EDUCATION ASSOCIATION (or OEA as it is known around Eastside). This club — OEA — was brought into being through the state and federal vocational and career legislation of the last fifteen years. The primary purpose of membership in the OEA is the LEADERSHIP GUIDANCE and OPPORTUNITY that develop through club activities. Members participate in the DEMOCRATIC PROCESS through election of officers at all levels, but particularly so at state and national conventions where officers are elected each year through nominating, campaigning, and caucusing activities. Contests are held each year in every phase of business skill. The Regional for Eastside is usually held in one of the high schools in Ft. Wayne, but state contestants who make the top 3 at regional compete at the J. Everett Light Career Center in Indianapolis over a three-day period. It usually takes over a week to attend the national contest which can be held in any major city of the United States such as Boston, Detroit, or Houston. The Indiana OEA clubs sponsor the JUNIOR OLYMPICS each year and the Eastside OEA clubs bring a charm and finishing school to senior level career lab students annually. OEA is so important as an organization that it is considered co-curricular and brings many of its activities right into the classroom. I also hope that ten years from now when you say, What was that teacher's name? you'll get out your yearbook and look it up. Use this book as a memory book, for nowhere else will you find the events, names, and places of the things that happened around you in 1978-79. Putting together a yearbook is not an easy task. It requires many people working together. First of all, I would like to thank the yearbook staff for the fine job they did in selling advertising, and also in the sales of the yearbooks. Also, I would like to thank the advertisers, because without them there really couldn't be a yearbook. Secondly, I would like to thank my photographers Ken Ray, Mark Haberkorn, Jody Phillips, Roger Powers, Robert's Studio and KFS Studio. I would also like to thank Donna Kray and any others who contributed photographs to this book. The administration and faculty helped immensely. Teachers were very understanding for club and sports pictures. The administration helped set dates for the photographer to come and set school days aside to do so. A special thanks to the bus drivers, who have now had their picture taken 3 or 4 times. Thanks for your cooperation. Thanks to Miriam and Mary Jo for copy and scores. Also, thanks to Sheryl Kinsey, our business manager, who did a good job keeping everything straightened out. Coleen Van Zile, assistant editor, was a great help to me this year. She ended up typing a lot of things and doing dirty work for me. Thank you for all of your help and best of luck next year. Now comes the hard part. How can you ever thank someone who has all the patience and understanding in the world? Mrs. Hood is that person. She kept me going when I got discouraged. She was always there bringing up things I never even thought of. Mrs. Hood is a terrific person who knows her yearbook stuff. Finally, I'd like to thank you, the reader. I hope that looking through these pages has helped you recapture some of the things that happened and made this school year unique and The Last of the Seventies. 1979 Editor Denise Jennings 136 Good-Bye
