Under a slight mist at Arlington, we witnessed the changing of the guard. Next, our group took a tour of the White House. At our next stop, we met Congressman Dan Quayle and Senator Richard Lugar on the steps of their respective houses of Congress. Then we entered the rotunda of the Capitol and were given a tour. This tout- led us to the House of Representatives where we were allowed to sit in on their proceedings. Afterwards, we walked to the Supreme Court building and were allowed a brief glimpse of the Justices in action. We were finally let loose for a two hour lunch to be spent at each student's leisure. Some walked to the Washington Monument while others toured mapy of the Smithsonian buildings. One group even took a four block, $2.60 taxi ride. At the appointed time, we boarded the buses again and headed toward the National Archives. Here, we saw many of the important documents of our nation. Night had fallen on the city as we made our final stop at the Lincoln Memorial. We were then chauffered back to the airport where we boarded our Yellow Banana flight which flew us home. 36 Visit Washington, D.C. Reporters interview normal American boy. Spring Musical ' 'Honestly Sincere'1 On the evening of May 5 and 6 the curtain rose on the Spring musical, BYE BYE BIRDIE. Under the guidance of Melanie Myers and Phil Tavolocci, the cast showed the madcap antics of a mother and her devoted sonny, an unfaithful but wildly popular rock singer, and an ordinary American family. The hilarity begins when Kim MacAfee, of Sweet Apple, Ohio, is chosen to have Conrad Birdie bestow his final kiss before he joins the army. The plot is further complicated by Rosie who tries to get Albert to give up the music business. After Hugo punches Conrad on the Ed Sullivan show, Albert cuts the apron strings. As the curtain falls, we see Albert and Rose going to be married as they start their lives together. Conrad leaves Sweet Apple incognito. 1 'Do you use the touch system?'' 41 It’s Only A HEAD TABLE: Ned Powell, Jody Phillips - Jr. Class President, Lisa Johnson, Brian Powell - Master of Ceremonies, Sheryl Kinsey - Invocation, Dan Cairl - Master of Ceremonies. Master of Ceremonies, Dan Cairl, welcomed all present. Jody Phillips welcomed the senior class and Ron Schmucker, senior class president gave a response. The dinner, catered by Hall's of Ft. Wayne proceeded after an invocation by Sheryl Kinsey. Immediately following the dinner, an amazing display of hypnotism was performed by Dr. Morton A. Ford. The formal dance was then held in the gymnasium with music provided by the Dick Seeger Orchestra. At midnight the king and queen were crowned and couples dispersed to change clothes and return at 1:00 a.m. for the after-prom held in the cafetorium. 42 Grand Illusion The audience welcomes returning astronauts. She came to the United States because she always had an interest in the United States and felt the opportunity was too great to pass up. During Sumiko's stay she lived with the Reynold Johnson, Tom Armstrong, and Randy Bercaw families. Sumiko returned to Kashiwa, Chiba, Japan in July after a one year stay. Sumiko was a member of the varsity gymnastics team and the first exchange student to graduate with the senior class in 8 years. Sumiko found the people in the United States very friendly and really enjoyed her visit. One last picture. Mario and Sumiko Mario Lorencatto arrived in January, 1977, from Sumare, Brazil and remained over a year. Mario was sent via the Rotary International Youth Exchange. During his visit he lived with the George Kandel, Tom Armstrong, and Wendell Hughes families. Mario was a starting member of the varsity basketball team, but unfortunately had to leave in mid-season. Mario really enjoyed his stay and hated to leave his new friends at Eastside. The smiling faces of Mario and Sumiko will be missed in the halls of EHS. Hopefully, they will remember their new-found friends as much as they will be remembered here. They will always be welcome to come back and visit Eastside. 47 Senior Awards ST. BOYS' STATE This year Mark Richmond and Alvin Hook attended Hoosier Boys' State held on the campus of Indiana University at Terre Haute. Hoosier Boys' State, an American Legion activity, is an objective citizenship training institution which teaches responsibility to the community, state, and nation. It is a school of Government and practical politics and has been designed to give actual experience to the boys who attend. It enables young men who possess high moral character and leadership ability to have a better understanding of our government, both local and state. GIRLS' STATE The purpose of Hoosier Girls' State is to educate young women in the duties, privileges, rights, and responsibilities of American citizenship, and to give these citizens, in a realistic manner, an opportunity to learn the problems of government with special emphasis upon the contribution women can make to the welfare of the city, county, state, and nation. Hoosier Girls' State is a school of government and practical politics, but is a non-partisan program. It has been designed to give actual experience in the problems of self-government as it operates in Indiana. The French Club planned a busy schedule this year but, due to snow days, their activities were extremely limited. The only activity they were able to complete was a French dinner prepared and served in the home economics room. The main dishes - beef bourginon, onion soup, quiches, and omelets - were prepared by Mrs. Thomas and the senior members with other members contributing fondues, desserts and French breads. Approximately 30 members attended and enjoyed the French cuisine. This year Yvonne Miller, Sally Strange, Linda Freidenberger, and Cheri Schmucker were nominated and accepted into Who's Who in Foreign Languages for Students in Indiana and Kentucky. The members are looking forward to next year and the many things they hope to accomplish. 72 Son Muy Interesantes! The 1977-78 school year proved to be successful for the Spanish Club's fund- raising projects. The club raised $770 in order to send Joy Zeigler and Gary Staley on a one month trip to Torreon, Mexico for schooling in the Spanish language and culture. This money was raised by sponsoring a disco, having three bake sales at the Knisely Bank and by holding a Spanish dinner in Spencerville. There was also money contributed to the club by interested community members. It is hoped that we will be able to send three people this coming summer. This year's officers were: Michelle Zeigler, Pres.; Charlotte Mayer, V. Pres.; and Brenda Beaty, Sec.-Treas. 1977 students sent to Torreon, Mexico - Melinda Cannady and Mona Gonzales. 73 Eastside’s Publishers This year the Inside Eastside staff had a very hectic, but productive year. They won four blue ribbons and also won a spirit stick. They were also selected as one of the top squads of the camp to compete for the Mark of Excellence Award. FHA and HERO are basically service organizations which help the community through individual growth. Their money-making projects included selling carmel corn and apples at Homecoming, selling candles at Christmas, and sponsoring the last disco of the school year. They worked toward their goal of becoming an Honor Chapter again this year, which meant they had to get 160 out of a possible 200 points. At Christmas they adopted a needy family and collected clothing, toys, and food which were wrapped as gifts for the family. They helped by selling pumpkin bread for the handicapped, helped at the BPW Christmas party for children, canvassed for the March of Dimes and some members walked in the DeKalb County March of Dimes Walkathon. They attended the Fall District Meeting at Churubusco and the Spring District Meeting at Heritage. As the final activity, four members earned points to attend the state FHA convention held at the Indianapolis Hilton in Indianapolis. These four were Brenda Lockard, Sindy Cumings, Lori Cumings, Pam Rinard, and they were accompanied by Mrs. Carol Rufner. 81 Future Farmers Of America FIRST ROW: Mr. Halsey, Advisor; Terry Keesler, Sentinel; Randy Provines, Reporter; Alvin Hook, V. This year the chapter planted corn on their test plot and also sold wood that had been seasoned for a year. The annual pest hunt was held again this year and members were responsible for turning in 350 points worth of mice tails, bird heads, and various other pests. If they failed to reach the minimum number of points, they had to pay the chapter a fine of $1. FFA members participated in several judging activities throughout the year, including livestock, dairy, and crops. The Crops Teams won at the county and district levels and then advanced to State competition held at the Indiana State Fair. Members were also active at the District III contest. Mark Richmond won third place in the essay contest. Other members were entered in public speaking, freshman creed contest, quiz bowl and impromptu speaking contest. This is the final page of the 1978 Easterner. Some may feel relief, while others may wonder why it must end. There is a reason why we stop on page 136 - we are on a limited budget. There are always 136 pages and sometimes it's hard to put everything done in one school year on that many pages, but we try to do the best with what we have. I hope that those of you who have never worked on a yearbook or newspaper will stop and consider all of the things behind a publication. I never realized all the different aspects connected with the yearbook; I thought it would be relatively simple. But now, having come to the last page, I can truly state that it is very complex, very demanding, and difficult to manage. I now have a greater appreciation for all of the people involved, and I hope you will too. I'd like to recognize all of those people who helped make this yearbook possible. Denise Jennings, Assistant Editor, helped me immensely. She was my companion and slave to the end. She contributed her time and ideas and gave up MANY nights to work on layouts. Most of those times she got the dirty jobs: cropping unmanageable pictures, thinking of impossible headlines, etc. Thank you for all of your help. Thanks should go to those girls who helped during sixth period: Juli, Carol, Karin and Joy and many others. Mrs. Hood's classes helped name pictures and helped in other things whenever they were asked. Thank you. Thanks to Mr. Penix and his photographers - Ramon, Ken, and Karen - for pitching in when I thought there was no chance in the world I could get a picture. They always came through. Many other terrific pictures were taken by my right-hand man, Kevin Fry. Kevin often took a lot of flack, Kevin, where are those pictures? -- Kevin will you please take these pictures? but he eventually came through. I would sincerely like to thank him for all the time and effort he put forth. Also, thanks to Jody Phillips who pitched in and helped finish senior candids and other pictures she happily took for me. She really saved me at the last minute. Thanks to Don and Robert's Studio for putting up with our craziness and inexperience with the picture world. Thanks to Connie, Connie, and Yvonne and all of the others for their help in copy. Jen Hudson, business manager, did an extra fine job keeping books this year. A special thanks has to go to Mrs. Hood. No one has any idea what this lady goes through. First of all, she put up with me - with everyone. She never yells when we goof up or goof off. She didn't kill us when we missed deadlines. She took everything in stride and helped through the whole year. Our yearbook would definitely be lacking something if she hadn't been here to help. The administration and faculty also helped a lot. Teachers cooperated for club and sports pictures and RARELY complained about being detained. The administration helped set dates for the photographer to take pictures and allowed us to take pictures during a school day. Thank you all. Thanks to the advertisers, because without them there really wouldn't have been a 1978 Easterner. There are so many people who have helped in other ways and I'm truly sorry if your name is omitted, but I thank you for all of your help. The yearbook wouldn't be complete without you. Lastly, I would like to thank you, the reader, for taking the time to glance through these pages. Hopefully, we've helped you remember the good times. 1978 Editor Linda Freidenberger
