It was sponsored by the Student Council who chose Eastside is You as the theme. The class of 1980 had the win- ning float, second place - the class of 1976, and third place - the class of 1977. This year eleven girls competed for the title of Miss Homecoming Queen. These girls represented their organizations: Marilyn Lengacher - Band, Cindy Michael- Booster Block, Brenda Haverstock - Art Club, Diane Peden - French Club, Becky Hill - OEA, Cathy Lambert - Blazettes, Sherry Alloway - Spanish Club, Holly Carpenter - GAA, Bernie Rubalcaba - Letter- men's Club, Rhonda Hankey - VICA, and Penny Maloy - Choir. Last year's reigning queen, Cheryl Hudson, handed over her crown to the new Miss Homecoming Queen 1974 , Bernadette Rubalcaba. First and second place went to Diane Pe- den and Marilyn Lengacher respec- tively. This event began with a parade through town followed by the foot- ball game. During the game the queen was crowned and afterwards a dance was held in her honor at the cafetorium. Thanks to Mr. Smith and the Stu- dent Council for making this a great success. This year the event was held at Indiana State University in Terre Haute. The program lasted one week and was very worth- while. The participants are involved in their own govern- ment proceedings. They have precinct and committee meetings just as real to them as takes place in the State government. A governor was elected along with seven state officials and a Senate and House of Repre- sentatives. The people run their own government and even make laws. These are not just laws pertaining to this program. These are laws concerning the State of Indiana. The laws that are finally passed were then sent to Governor Bowen and the Senators. There are also many fun times during this week. While having fun you learn the functions of state and local government. Jack, Brian, and Roberta would like to give their sincere thanks to the American Legion and its Auxiliary for making it possible for them to take part in such aprogram. On Friday April 4, and Saturday April 5, East- side's drama and music departments joined together to present David Cothrell's and Michael Fingerut's musical ROCK-N-ROLL. This is a musical of the 50,s when the perfect society was really starting to roll. Ike was Pres- ident, the Dodgers were a New York team, and Elvis Presley was the greatest thing that had happened to music since Sinatra. When Corndoggie asks the girlfriend of the high school football hero to go to the prom with him, she accepts to his utter amazement and delight. There's one ily in the ointment. Comdoggie keeps having dreams that come true, like the outcome of the next football game, and he dreams that if he goes on this date with the beautiful bobby socker, a terrible calamity will occur. The poor guy loves his Betsy Lou so much that he comes up with a brilliant solution solely for her benefit. He stands her up for the big dance. Amid the humor and gen- uine pathos of the story line are a series of fine songs: ROCK AROUND THE JOCKS, SURF- SIDE IN THE GOLDEN SUMMER, WHAT'S HAPPENIN ? HE STOOD HIS BABY UP, ALONE ON PROM NIGHT, SO MUCH MORE EATS, HERBERT HOOVER FIGHT SONG, OH HOW KEEN. .- Darlene, Karen, Paula, and Lauri performing in Rock n' Roll Mark and Dick working together. Does it hurt Cindy? 18 Jr.-Sr. Prom Everyone knows that on a certain day in spring their dreams will come true. This dream, with all its enchantment, oc- curred on April 26 at Eastside. The Stairway to Heaven was given to the Seniors to be a special memory of their last year. The evening began with the banquet at 7:30 p.m., followed by Dick Stoner, a well-known magician. After this fine performance, everyone proceeded to the gymnasium where the Earl Zimmerman Orchestra provided music for the couples dancing pleasure, and KFS Studio of Garrett provided photos for a long-lasting memory. The high point of the evening was the crowning of the king and queen at 12:00 midnight. The After-Prom was from 1:00 to 4:00 a.m. and was assisted by many line community organizations who helped to make this a great success. The entertainment for the After-Prom was a gambling casino and a rock group. The Mason Brothers from Bloomington, provided the dancing and listening pleasure. Immediately following the After-Prom an early breakfast was served. Concluding the night's activi- l ties was the drawing from the tickets purchased with the money won at the casino. After the long and enjoyable night, students parted with memories of the 1975 Junior-Senior A I Prom. Mike Roop helps Dick Stoner, the magician. In the fall of the year the Lettermen hosted a car wash and made a profit of over Sl00. In January a chili supper was sponsored for the public and over S200 was grossed at this event. In March the Lettermen ran the concession stands at the faculty vs. Texas cowgirls game and again made a sizeable profit. Later in the same month a swimming party at Tri-State College was enjoyed by everyone. The purchases under consideration are banners of all the conference teams for the gym, and a leg-press machine for our weight machine. 48 Lettermen FIRST ROW: Micki Koch, V. Band is just a single name which is used to stand for several band groups. The Marching Band performed for the football games, Auburn Fair, Lakeland Fair, and also at the Spencerville Centenniel. The Concert Band prepared and presented a winter and a spring concert. They also went to District and State Contests to compete. Included in those going to the contests were a woodwind ensemble, trumpet trio, saxophone quartet, and a french horn quartet. The french horn quartet qualified to go to the State Contest. The Concert Band also played for this year's graduation. The Pep Band appeared at every home basketball game providing music for the teamis warm-ups, Blazette routines, and spirit- raising yells. There is also a Dance Band, which played for the Spring Musical, Rock 'n Roll. . In order to raise money for the band, they had a candy sale as their money-making project. This was quite a success, as they raised S4,000. With this money they were able to purchase three new instruments. To end their year, the band held their annual banquet on April I8 at the Eastside Cafetorium. V if , Visiting band entertains students. 9 x - ,se - 2 A P 1 sum' ., ii- -fx V v 2' p w . The 26-member Verdi Cho- rale is a new group to the East- side music department this year. Members are chosen through spring auditions or by invitation. Purposes are to sing music of a greater level of dif- ticulty, and because of its small size, to present a number of public performances. A major- ity of the work this year was done in the swing choir idiom, performing with the addition of instruments and choreogra- phy. Presentations included four convocations, four con- certs, two swing choir contests, and a number of community functions. The Verdi Chorale is under the direction of Joyce Yoder. This year E their most prominent sports were Xe-N basketball, gymnastics, and track. The junior-high GAA program proved to be highly successful in training the girls for their later years. Throughout the year many members helped various teachers grade papers and other odd jobs. Some members became involved in tutoring ,students with diffi- culties in their schoolwork. May 6 the entire club ate at Don Hall's Factory in Fort Wayne for their annual banquet. Afterward the Senior Prophecy was read. The 1974-75 Student Council worked hard to carry out all the activities that they are responsible for. The organization is responsible for many of the activities that take place throughout the school year. They ran the Bookstore, revised the dress code, controlled the coat check, sold shamrocks for Muscular Dystrophy, selected the convos and arranged Field Day. The council was also very successful in planning and carrying out the Homecoming parade, coronation, and dance. There was also a new attraction added to the activities of the council, the Sweetheart Dance. It proved to be very successful and entertaining. Through the activities of the council, the students and faculty, as well as the administration, came to agree- ments and better understandings. Their hard work was appreciated by everyone. The Eastside FFA is becoming well known in this community. FFA's main purpose is to develop leadership, cooperation, scholarship, character, and service in the FFA members. Starting in September, we started having soil judging teams. These teams participate in four levels of. competition: County, District, State, and National. Our soil judging team advanced to the District level. Next, is the main event. The trip to the National convention in Kansas City, Missouri. This is the big opportunity for. the Sophomore class. The sophomores with the most points are eligible to go. During the winter months, the members work at wood cuts and selling the wood to nearby residents. Also, members prepare to participate on the FFA Basketball team. During March, the members prepare to participate in Chapter and District contest which also may go to state or national level. During this same time, judging teams are forming to participate at District level. The main judging teams are Livestock and Dairy. In June, many members go to the state convention at Purdue University. In July and August, members go to camp for leadership training. Our year-round project is our test plots outside of Butler, which we raise crops on. This project lasts year round, but most of the work is done in the summer and fall months. These test plots also give students a chance to work with and learn about crop production outside ofthe classroom. V Candy Richmond shows her in telligence once again! This year a group of senior girls decided to show their spirit in a new and different way. Each girl drew the name of a senior basketball player at random. Then the Thursday night before each' game a surprise was made for each senior player. The surprises were usually crazy gifts such asg puzzles, poems, cookies and cupcakes. Even such things as Christmas stockings and valentine candies were given. The boys never knew who their secret senior girl was until the winter sports banquet. The girls then revealed their identity and presented their player with a homemade, embroidered pillow. The girls put a great deal of work and effort into the project but all of them enjoyed the time they spent. They hope the players enjoyed the spirit that was shown. 84 Secret Seniors! The Seniors went to Tri-State swimming, Monday, November 18, 1974. The whole group ate at A2ar's after swimming. In December the Seniors ordered their memory books, senior keys, and announcements. They were also measured for caps and gowns. These were ordered from .Iosten's. On Tuesday, March 18, 1975 the class went to Indianapolis to tour the Indianapolis City Police Depart- ment, the Capitol Building, Governor's Office, Senate and House of Representatives, Supreme Court Room and the Indianapolis 500 Speedway. While class mem- bers were active in all phases of Eastside there were also class activities that created a closeness among the class members that had not existed in previous years. Money-making projects included the annual maga- zine subscription campaign which was the most suc- cessful of any to date. The success of this effort can be attributed to the concentrated efforts of the entire class. During the fall and winter sports season, the class was responsible for the concessions which added sub- stantially to the class treasury. Representing the class as Miss Eastside in the Miss DeKalb County Pageant was Dawn Billings. The Home- coming Queen was Bernadette Rubalcaba. The highlight of the year was the Junior-Senior Prom 7 developed around the theme Stairway to Heaven. i All in all, the many class activities made this a year to be remembered by all. Being a seventh grader involves more than being too short to reach your locker, getting lost in the halls, and leaving convocations or pep sessions before being dismissed. It involves spirit! The seventh graders exhibited plenty of spirit by winning the Homecoming float contest and in decorating the halls for special events. It involves responsibility. Officers elected this year are Julie Armstrong, President: Fred Hampel, Vice President: Anita Hudson, Secretary, Lee Blaine, Treasurerg and Sharon Frakes, Student Council Representa- tive. It involves concern as a group. The class of '80 collected coupons to contribute toward the swimming pool fund. The class also contributed a good sum to WOWO's Penny Pitch. It involves fun too. Two class parties were scheduled at the Silvermoon Roller Rink, one in October, the other in April. ' The sponsors for the seventh grade were Mr. Bolinger, Mr. Childs, Mrs. Kelsey, Mrs. Parshall, Mr. Sherer, and Mrs. White. o' r Compliments of BUTLER SHELL Seventh Grade 121 LINDA CAROL ALBERTSON CHOIR 3, BOOSTER BLOCK l,2, FHA 2.3. No editor could completely do all the work alone. I was fortunate to have a very willing and cooperative staff. There are so many people that deserve recognition that I am very sorry if I miss anyone, but I thank you for all your help. I would like to thank Mrs. Hood for putting up with our staff. Also I would like to thank her for all her patience. I would especially like to thank Mr. Penix and Kent Houser for all their cooperation in relation to the photographic work you see throughout this book. The time and effort they put into this book is greatly appreciated. V I would like to thank Cindy Michael, Kim Anderson, Holly Carpenter, Grace Hausbach, Becky Hill, Jackie Campbell, and Kim Likes. These are a few of the senior girls who helped make this yearbook possible. These girls gave up many hours of their free time in order to help produce this book. I would also like to thank many of the juniors. on the staff who gave so much of their time and typing talents. Last of -all I would like to thank Cheryl Kandel for the help she gave. Also I wish her the best of luck next year with the hopes she can find as many nice people to work with as I did. I would like to thank everyone at Eastside for making this an enjoyable year. I hope this yearbook brings back as many good memories to everyone else as it does to me. Roberta Wilkerson 1975 Editor
