Entitled ''Drama in its Finest the convo had three segments: the Greek theater, the Shakespearian era, and modern-day drama. )8 Eastside's Many Attractions Because of their popularity with the students of Eastside, the Caldwells returned for another performance. Rod Knox, stu- dent council president and master of ceremonies of all convos, welcomed the musicians. A group from Calvary Temple performed before the student body. The people related experiences with drugs and witchcraft and answered many questions that plague teenagers. The group's intent was to pro- mote belief in God, and the performance was its first before a school. This group of girls has a profound in- terest in sports of all types, and enjoys the fine art of fair competition. Eastside intramural competition involved the four major sports—softball, basketball, vol- leyball, and field and track. More individual activities were added to the sports curriculum this year in order to reach the possible capa- bilities and interests of all the girls. Among these new individualized sports were fencing, gymnastics, bowling, badminton, ring toss, archery, and ping pong. Several of the Eastside GAA members will be eligible for the famed National Physical Fitness Award, an award that is somewhat difficult to come by and is quite an honor to receive. The Girls' Athletic Association of Eastside has a right to be proud of its members and their achievements, as does anyone at Eastside who is interested in sports. Each year the FFA has a pest hunt and the teams were usually divided up by classes. Since it was time for change, this year the teams were divided up into a north team and a south team with Road 8 being the dividing line. The south won and the north treated them to a chili supper. The next major activity was preparing for the District III Contest, which was held at Woodlan High School. Each year there is a FFA Foundation Drive. Money collected from this drive is sent to the State Foundation to cover expenses of FFA awards and projects. This year the State Foun- dation took on the project of building a new Leadership Training Center in Central Indiana and our Chapter cut and sold firewood to assist with this project. The French Club, consisting of 30 members, tries to make France and French culture more meaningful to the students, which the classroom study cannot always accomplish. This year the French Club pursued several activities. The first was a Christmas Party at the I M Building with the Spanish Club. This proved to be an exciting and interesting experience for all. The highlight of the year was a complete French meal served at Cafe Johnell in Fort Wayne. Escargot (snails) were served as appetizers, followed by onion soup, salad, and the main course of a petit filet with artichoke and vegetables. Ingenuity and creativity were important factors to photographers, layout workers, and writers, and all tried to make the 1970 annual a spe- cial publication for every Eastside student. More pictures that are relative to the people of East- side were included this year, along with the popular candid shots and informal pictures. Layout was organ- ized in new and unique ways to enhance the attractive- ness of the publication. Write-ups explaining more about organizations and activities were included in the 1970 Easterner in hopes that memories will remain clearer and for a longer period of time. A good deal of time and effort has been put into the Easterner, and it is hoped that everyone finds his copy an enjoyable representation of the 1969-70 school year. Homecoming 69-70 above: Excited Blazer fans, side: Seniors with float contest. A TIME FOR ALL SEASONS . . . Homecoming '69 was a very special weekend for many Eastsiders. The festivities began with a rousing pep rally in the gym on October 10. The Junior class took a roaring victory in the yelling competition and the seven queen candidates were introduced. In the evening the an- nual talent show was presented and various clubs and individuals had the opportunity to exhibit their unique abilities. The show also included the crown- ing of Sandy Eck as Little Miss Homecoming and the queen candidates were introduced to the huge crowd attending the program. A parade including class floats, candidate cars and the Eastside marching band contributed to the excitement of Saturday. The Eastside-Hamilton game immediately followed, and fans were delighted as they witnessed the Blazers de- feat the Marines, 14—0. A memorable coronation conducted at half-time saw Debbie McDowell, rep- resentative of the Future Teachers, crowned Home- coming Queen and it was announced that the seniors had captured first place in the float compe- tition. The two days of fun and enjoyment closed with a victory dance featuring the Gremlins. Eastside will long resound with the laughter, thrills, and hap- piness that made up Homecoming '69. The purpose of the 1970 Student Government, commonly known as Boys' and Girls' State, was to promote an understanding of how the United States Government works. The Boys' State was held at Indiana State University at Terre Haute, and Girls' State was at Indiana University at Bloomington. The participants were permitted to campaign and run for office. The two fictitious parties were the Nationalists and Federalists, similar to the Republicans and Democrats. Various officers were elected, the most important being the Governor and one Lieutenant Governor. The students were enter- tained by many interesting speakers, including Governor Whitcomb and a member of the FBI. The week of participating in student government began many long-lasting friendships and helped create a greater respect and understanding of state and federal government. Mexico Visit Late in June, 1969, Carol Lambert and Gerald Murphy left for Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico, for six weeks of study at the Colegio Americano de Torreon. They lived with middle-class Mexican families, and thus had the opportunity to learn Spanish first hand. Their days were filled with swimming, shopping and interesting field trips, and the nights held dancing, parties, and getting together with friends, both Mexi- can and American. A weekend trip to Mexico City was one of the highlights of the summer. There Carol and Gerald saw various government buildings, cathedrals, museums, markets, the pyramids, the University of Mexico, the Olympic Stadium, and a bullfight. The trip was financed through the efforts of the Spanish Club and donations from interested members of the community and is one of the most worthwhile projects sponsored by an Eastside Club. in Mr. Cole and Mr. Williams pose as the school clowns. The 1970 Prom, held at Potawatomi Inn, Pokagon State Park, was one of beauty and sophisti- cation. A delicious banquet launched the evening and was followed by the Prom itself. The ballroom was uniquely decorated with colorful flowers, im- mense bumble bees and lady bugs, and a large wishing well. Dancing was provided by the Blue Impressions, and two of the evening's highlights were the crowning of the king and queen and the entertainment provided by Dr. Irving Ross, a well known psychologist and hypnotist. A new touch was added to this year's Prom—photographs of couples and singles were taken by KFS Studios of Garrett. The Juniors showed an amazing quantity of good taste in organizing and carrying out the Prom, and deserved all of the praise that they received. April 25,1970, will long be remembered as the date of one of the most wonderful Proms that Eastside has ever had. The location of this year's After-Prom was Bledsoe's Beach, a popular sum- mer beach area and resort. A caravan of students and guests was led to the site by competent policemen and was greeted by members of the Butler Lions, Jaycees, and Rotary; the ST. Joe Lions; and the Spencerville Community Club. Entertainment consisted of a dance featuring the Blue Agony, a popular rock group; light snacks of pop and potato chips; door prize drawings; and a casino of games. After several hours of dartcing and gambling with play money, the group disbanded and returned to the Butler Elementary Cafe- torium for the Prom Breakfast served by the Butler Enerjettes. At this time, students put the money they had won to use in an auction for the grand prizes of the evening. Tired students then went their separate ways, taking with them the memories of the 1970 Junior-Senior Prom and After-Prom. 117 Banquets Are Highlights Rod seems to be enjoying himself at the N.H.S.-F.T.A. Even the sponsors and principal seemed to enjoy the F.T.A.-N.H.S. Banquet. The F.T.A.-N.H.S. Debbie, Nancy, Karen and Carol are trying their hand at Spanish pastry. The Spanish Club Banquet held at Taco Inn in Fort Wayne enabled the students to try all sorts of Spanish foods. Throughout the year the different or- ganizations of E.H.S. held banquets and special trips to recognize the accomplish- ments of the group. The first banquet of the year, held in December, enabled the Spanish Club members to try Mexican and Spanish foods. In April the F.T.A. was well represented in Indianapolis for the State Convention by nine delegates held at the Ben Davis High School. May, the month of banquets, saw the joint F.T.A.-N.H.S., F.H.A., F.F.A., and All Sports Banquets. Activities began at the gym, where teams were organized for an hour long scavenger hunt. Afterward, the party shifted to Lambert's barn, where hungry seniors indulged in food and danc- ing. The evening was highlighted by a huge bon- fire, around which everyone gathered to roast hot dogs. Various games and vigorous activities concluded the party. 122 Compliments of Max D. Wills, M.D. and Swimming... Happiness Well, what do ya know, we did it! The beautiful Club Olympia was the scene of the second senior class party, held March 9. Seniors spent two hours splashing, diving, and dunking in the gigantic pool, and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Water games were played, and the pool's many facilities were put to use by the energetic seniors. The two bus loads of hungry swimmers visited two of the more popular eating places of Fort Wayne after the tiring water activities. This was certainly one of the most successful parties ever given by a class from Eastside, one which the seniors who attended it will never forget. She received the best actress award. Anne Wolkenhauer is a sixteen year old exchange student from Germany. She was born in Celle, a little town in northern West Germany on May 27, 1953. Anne is commonly known to all her American friends as “kraut (old left over from World War II). She refuses to reveal her most embarrassing moment for it still embarrasses her. One of the happiest times in her life was when she was accepted as an exchange student. GIRL! The question about her most prized pos- session was answered, “My rings, I just love rings with all kinds of dingle dangles attached to them. One fact that contributes a lot to Anne's delight of being a senior is that she is actually only of junior age and would be a junior in Germany right now. One reason why she is looking forward to graduation is that it marks the end of the school year and the beginning of summer which I've been looking forward to all year. Anne stated that she probably did not regard her graduation from Eastside as important a period in her life as most of her fellow sen- iors for she has to go back to two more years of high school, which she thinks deserves some pity. Are You Ready? Mr. Wagner leads his fearless band of future scientists through the Greenfield Village and Henry Ford Museum at Dearborn, Michigan. The lively and spirited group enjoyed a day of fun filled education. Steve Cole and Steve Keuneke seem to be enjoying the ex- ploration of old houses. Don't sit down yet Kevin—there is still a lot more to go through! Look at Dave and Dale, they are as bright and eager as ever. BUTLER. INDIANA 139 Dear Eastside, Before you come to the last page of the Easterner, I would like to say a few words. Throughout the last weeks of school I heard I hate to leave, It won't be the same without them, and EHS is going to seem empty. Eastside changes every year because each class changes. Eastside isn't just the building, it's the people. The 1970 annual was created for the purpose of restoring old memories and letting you re- live them through pictures. The production of this annual could not have come about without the help of my competent staff, and to them I want to say thanks . I want to personally thank several other people who were heads of my staff—Lorna, Lyndia, Randy and Carol. Words cannot express my ap- preciation to Mrs. Hood and Mr. Williams, who guided us through what seemed to be a touch and go year. I want to also thank the advertisers, because they made this annual possible. Last, but certainly not least, you the subscribers. Thank you for purchasing the annual which was created for you, and I hope you like it. Yours sincerely, Editor I
