“Pride in Eastside” Because We are Eastside Following is the winning essay, submitted by the National Honor So- ciety, during Pride in Eastside Week. It was chosen for this page be- cause it represents best the theme of the 1968 EASTERNER. There seems to be an epidemic spreading at Eastside. Like a cold, it's spreading to everyone. Like the measles, everyone is breaking out with it. Like the mumps, everyone is swelling with it. Like the seven yearitch, it keeps everyone on the move. What is this thing that is caus- ing people to stay after school and clean rooms and make signs? Why, it’s pride. Everyone, well, almost everyone, seems to have some phase of it and this is only the beginning. There is more talk of later activities and fun-filled events . Are you a victim? Check yourself. Do you attend ball games and yell? Do you participate in one or more of the active clubs in our school? Do you work hard and cooperate with your teachers? If you do, you have a case of pride. Since this is such a widespread epidemic at Eastside, it appearsthat there can be no cure. Let's see if we can give it to EVERY- ONE! We want no cure! Long live Pride in Eastside! 2
